Hi, John with etrailer. Hey, if you're looking to do more with your SUV and get the most out of it that you can, take a look at the Curt Class 3 Trailer Hitch Receiver that we have on our 2023 Mazda CX5. Now look, trailer hitches aren't just for towing anymore. There's so many accessories out there like cargo racks and bike racks that hook up to these things now. So we can take a closer look at this receiver hitch. This is a class three so it's going to have a two inch by two inch reinforced collar.
Now it's industry standard. This is also the most popular size as far as ball mounts go if you are towing or for accessories like bike racks and cargo carriers. You have the most options for a trailer hitch with this size. One of the things I like about this hitch is that it's a hidden cross tube. As you can see the bumper here, it looks factory.
The only thing that you're actually seeing is the receiver portion of this. And this is a powder coat gloss black finish. We're going to have a wire type chain hanger. And speaking of those, got plenty of room for your standard S hook or if you got a heavier duty clevis style, (metal clanking) we have no problem getting those on either. Now something to keep in mind with these, it takes a five eighths inch pin and clip.
Now these are not included, so if you're new to towing you are going to need something like this. Either this that we have available here at etrailer or we have some that lock down to secure your trailer. Now speaking of accessories, let's get some measurements. And we can see this trailer hitch kind of sits back behind the bumper, which is nice. Walking around it you're not going to beat your legs on it or anything like that.
But we'll get some measurements, like from the ground to the top of the inside collar here, we're looking at 13 and a half inches. And then from the center of the pin hole to the outer edge of our bumper here, about three and a half inches. Now those numbers are important if you're considering a ball mount. If you are going to tow a trailer you may want one that has a slight rise to it to match your trailer or if you're looking at cargo racks and bike racks that actually fold up, those are important features and numbers to know so that we're not going to contact the back of this bumper when they are folded. Now talking about accessories, let's talk about some weight capacities of this hitch here. We'll start with the tongue weight rating. That's 600 pounds. Now that's the force pushing down on your hitch. So if you have a cargo rack that's loaded up with a generator and all sorts of cabin gear, that's 600 pounds, that's quite a bit of weight. Or a bike rack, you can get one of those big four bike rack carriers with e-bikes. That's going to be quite a bit of hauling that you can do with that. Now speaking of hauling, 4,000 pound gross trailer weight rating, that's going to be the weight of your trailer and anything that you put in it or on it. Now it's probably more weight than your Mazda can actually tow. But go ahead and check your owner's manual to check your weight capacities for your car. So the final thoughts on the Curt Hitch look, I like the way that these hitches fit these cars like this. They look factory, they look clean. The installation is pretty easy. If you want a different look, we have an etrailer hitch, bolts up the exact same. It just has a matte black finish, which you know, will look good with some of this lower matte trim on there. Speaking of installation, this thing goes up pretty easy. The only special tool that you really need would be a torque wrench and you can rent that from your local auto parts store for free. So if you want to see how to do it and you're interested in this hitch stick around, we'll show you step by step. So let's begin our installation. So at the back of your bumper here on your Mazda, you're going to have a plastic trim piece right here that's being held in by two pushpin fasteners and you can use either a hook tool like this or a small screwdriver to get those out. We'll basically just pick the center, you pull the center out and slide that out. You have one on each side here. So to actually remove the trim panel here, I pulled this side down so you could see. There's a plastic clip right here and I took my screwdriver and I came up on the backside of it and I pushed it towards the rear of the car to release it and then pull it down. We'll go ahead and do this on this side so you can actually see it in action here. I'll take my flathead, go on the backside of that tab, push towards the back of the car

Excellent demonstration. I'm sure it's the same for the 2024 model, will be tackling it soon. Thanks again

The Curt # C13315 is a confirmed fit for the 2024 Mazda CX-5. The procedure shown in the video would be the same for your 2024.

Good advice about removing the muffler. I would just go ahead and remove it no matter what. It is more like 5 minutes and can save a lot of scraped knuckles. You do need a deep 14mm socket

Thanks for your sharing. Besides, do we need to install a trailer brake for these kind of SUV?

If your trailer has electric brakes, and you want them to actuate you will need a brake controller. If you need a brake controller, you'll need a trailer wiring harness, # TK85VR, our # ETBC7 brake controller install kit and a controller like # RED24FR and a wiring pigtail like # RED69FR.
