How to fish for Ulua and Omilu Island Style, "The Wall" at Waikiki beach, Hawaii

  • I just had breakfast feeling good about the previous day catching the trumpet fish. Ready to go fishing and greet the day. I made my way to "The Wall" in Waikiki and to my surprise a local fisherman was fighting a big Omilu.
This was the first time I've ever seen a bluefin trevally live which can get to 20 - 30 pounds. They are fast moving and predatory fish who are more active in early morning or late evening as soon as the sun touches the water. They are just like their cousin the white GT trevally (Ulua) which can get to 150 lbs.
I realized on the islands most local fisherman don't require expensive gear to catch fish. They just know how. No G-Loomis, Lamiglas, and expensive reel setup unless your an avid Ulua angler. Congrats to braddah Paul for being so calm and confident. Landing the fish took skill and strategy. You could tell this was not his first rodeo.

Please refer to the DLNR Regulated Fishing Areas on Oahu webpage. No fishing in Waikiki MLCD at Anytime! See their map. The Waikīkī Marine Life Conservation District (MLCD) extends from the groin at Kapahulu Avenue(east side of Waikiki Walls) to the ewa wall of the Waikīkī War Memorial Natatorium. Do not confuse this area with The Waikīkī-Diamond Head Shoreline Fisheries Management Area (from Natatorium to Lighthouse) that allows fishing on even numbered years.

There are plenty of YT videos on Ulua fishing. Not too many caught on artificial. You may catch omilus or papios smaller trevallies on artificial flies/soft plastics with a clear bobber setup carolina rig or whipping rig as they call it in the islands.
The favorite way to catch big ulua is dunking. This bait fishing with octopus late evening or early morning as it is the favorite times big GT feed. Good luck.

For those people that may want to fish here, you are NOT allowed to fish from straight out from walls towards the Natatorium. That is closed permanently, so even if you hook up to a fish, It must not bite from the Diamond Head side of Walls, you can only bring it up on the Ewa side towards the Duke Kahanamoku Statue. The guy shooting this video should have held the line and fish, till the fisherman, released line while cameraman held fish there, and Paul went on the beach towards Ewa and pulled the 'omilu from an angle through the opening. He's lucky the DLNR weren't there, they would confiscate this film as evidence, and then charge and fine Paul. Not sure what the amount would be.

I was just curious about the fishing regulations according to DAR. Verbiage “Open to fishing” from January 1 to December 31 of even-numbered years. “Closed to fishing” from January 1 to December 31 of odd-numbered years.
Permitted: To fish for, take or possess any legal size marine life in season during the “open to fishing” period, provided that only hook-and-line, thrownet, handnet to land hooked fish, and spear fishing and hand harvesting methods are employed. With a permit to engage in activities otherwise prohibited by law for scientific, propagation or other purposes.
Anyone fishing in that area should call DAR to clarify on regulations as it may be confusing at times. Thanks for the comment. 🤙🏽🤙🏽
