Remember, when this was composed, the only way to get music in your house was to play it yourself. Can you imagine families with enough talent to play this? This is a virtuosic masterpiece, and Borodin wrote it as entertainment for his family and visiting musical friends. Read the accounts describing Borodin's living arrangements and the endless string of relatives who spent so many nights sleeping on every horizontal surface, including the piano!
