  • Over the last few days Marshall Amplification have been kind enough o lend me a couple of their fantastic Studio Series of amps. In this video we look at my favorite of the 2 the Marshall Studio Vintage. This 20 watt plexi has got to be one of my favorite amps I've ever tried. The Studio Rats are core band members Paul Drew on guitar/production/mixing, drummer James Ivey and Dan Hawkins on bass. They collaborate with singers and musicians to produce radio-ready songs.

    This is the one I was waiting for from you when I saw the jcm800 I was hoping for this one. I always played high gain amps when playing live but since getting into recording and producing from home I've been chasing tone more than ever and never knew that the plexi was the driven tone I always wanted until I discovered this amp. Thanks man im definitely getting this as my next amp purchase you have sold me on it. BTW I also bought an apollo twin x because of your videos on universal audio. The high treble channel is the one that has the bright cap. I keep that volume around 6 (1 o’clock) as that seems to be where the bright cap stops making it ice picky. Adjust the normal channel to taste or to the guitar. My Les Paul love high treble at 6.5 or so and the normal around 4.5 to warm it up.

    IMO, that amazing warm clean channel you can get is worth the price alone. @@TheStudioRats from the research that I did on the Astoria (when a mint-condition combo found it's way onto my radar a few months ago), it seems that the Astoria range (especially the Customs) were considered nice amps, but far too expensive for most.
      the other issue that Marshall purists seemed to have with them was the aesthetics...it seems that Marshall fans want EVERY amp they ever release to look like a Plexi or a JCM800 - end of story! fortunately for me, I'm not biased and I love the dark red tolex with the cream GT stripe! :)
      I was lucky and picked mine up for a great price. cosmetically it was perfect and clean, but it did have a dodgy pre-amp valve. I decided to change every valve in there with Genelex Gold Lions, and I'm very happy with it.

      @@TheStudioRats you should buy a little black amp box by JHS, or a passive volume knob of any kind. It opens up the tonal possibilities massively. You can drive both channels like you would a preamp section, while using the passive knob as a master and get heavy sounds quietly or moderately. Then when you throw a clean boost into the mix it will do everything a jcm800 will do and more..at moderate levels. The amp sounds so much warmer when you're driving it's front end!

    Great sounds Paul. Lovely DGT. Do you think you could do a blues band pub gig with this on 20W i.e. not just home and studio use? No effects loop?

    • @TheStudioRats

      @superflea72 Před 3 lety +2

      I have one of these amps, and it would absolutely be loud enough for a pub band...as for clean/dirty, you can leave it jumped between high 2 and low 1 and alternate between the high 1 input, for dirty and the low 2 input for a lovely clean with nothing more than a little volume modulation here and there.
      also, if you need a lottle extra punch and volume, running it through a 4x12 helps...t's lovely! ☺

    For those with experience with this amp, is it giggable? I’m play as the main guitarist in a four piece typical pub covers band. Only the singer and drummer go through the PA as both myself and the bass player prefer to rely on back line and do not mic up. This is easy at the moment as I have a 100w head. I am looking for a smaller rig and love the look of the SV20 with the 2x12 vertical cab.
