vw T3 busman crash tests with T3's

this video proves how amazingly strong a T3 is !
unlike most cars, there's no engine in front of the car that will enter and kill you when you have an accident. Look at the unexpected short but very effective crumple zone !
Crash tests proved the T3 was one of the very safest cars of it's time. Safer then Volvo's ! Surprisingly, the T3 proved in other tests that it was safer than it's successor, the T4.
On the net there's even a video where they use a T3 that is launched at a very high speed on concrete wall in order to test the wall. On that video you will see it has no crash test dummies in it and no yellow striping on the sides.

I owned a 1982 Westphalia, hit a BIG Michigan deer going 55 mph head on one night. Scared the hell out of me, but it didn't do hardly any damage at all to the thing. Didn't even break any of the lights or the windshield. I just wish it had been as resistant to road salt and rust as it was to collisions.

It does have a crumple zone. The front bumper, and spare tire/carrier on the front underside were engineered to absorb front impacts.

it doesnt have crumple zones, so the force of the impact just stops the T3 almost instantly which isnt very safe

This later, redesigned VW van was clearly safer than the earlier ones. One of my brother's friends ran one into a utility pole in about 1961 and damaged his legs forever. There was no crumple zone then, nor any strength to protect your body - the front end got immediately squished, and your body came right after that.

@TheCottonTop the VW transport T3 shown in this video had quite a high level of saftey for a van some 30 yrs ago. The engine is in the back and would not intrude into the passenger's compartment. This car was built to last. The video showing a T3 pick-up was a security test for concrete walls, to withstand terrorist attacks. The VW was loaded with about 2.400 lbs on it's back and was smashed to the wall at around 65 mph. The destruction ceased when the concrete load itself finally hit the wall.

@andersonquinn23 First, the van does have 3 point seat belts (0:48), and second, the car used special crash beams in the front end to absorb the impact (2:14). I'm not saying it's the safest or strongest car in the world (you're right on that point), I'm just saying that it was considered extremely safe for when it was made.

You want the vehicle to crumple IF there's something between the passenger compartment and the impacted object. If the passenger compartment crumples and you're in the very front of the vehicle (as is the case with this), then at the very least, it'll be crumpled into your legs. Worst case, the back end of the vehicle has completely squished everything in the passenger compartment.

No doubting the strength of the structure and safe for this TYPE of vehicle. However, with the location of the front passengers so close to the impact area there is very little ‘crush’ space so deceleration would be a problem. This was at just 50kph. Much faster and your looking at serious internal injuries due to deceleration regardless if the structure holds up on not.

Not necessarily considering that it is a flat-front van from the 80s, it had several crumple zones such as the steering column, steering wheel, dashboard and part of the front bumper. Without getting into the cabin, the Volkswagens of previous generations are unsafe, even if it hurts
