As a firefighter with private ambulance part time job. I hate posting up in a area. I like the freedom at the station to workout, study , sleep between calls comfortably

I got certified as an EMT as a Border Patrol Agent, I had no idea I could do this going in. For those who want to be EMS and law enforcement this is awesome. I’ve gotten some good experience. Heavy trauma, rarely any medical calls. In remote areas we are often first on scene. We can go all the way up to paramedic and the agency pays for it all on top of paying you your normal salary. You can also go further and try out for our elite tactical search and rescue unit, BORSTAR.

Hmm… maybe that could be an option for me. But my goal is to be a paramedic for a fire department if everything goes as plan.

I thought about BORSTAR and BORTAC, but luckily my home city has a Paramedics TEMS unit for the FD that works with PD. But I've got a long ways right now, I'm currently an EMT-B in IFT.

I'm 65yo. I'm not riding a rig, that is a young man's game. I'm headed to the ER as a tech and volunteer clinics. And I got an interesting job offer from one of those home infusion places (hangover helper).

@@jackiepeck5770some states, or medical directors allow EMT-B’s to obtain IV/IO as well as administer some medication through the IV/IO. For that to occur they either require additional in house training and or a 3 day-2 week course with some clinical hours. Some states or medical directors also allow EMT-B’s to obtain supraglottic airways, utilize CPAP, obtain 4 lead EKG’s, etc.

If you are a brand new emt, the private/interfacility transfer jobs such as AMR might be a good start for you. They are always hiring and you can build up some experience and learn the basics of ems such as giving verbal reports, using the stretcher, moving patients (drawsheet method) basic skills like oxygen. Sometimes you will get to work with a paramedic and do ventilator/IV pump calls, etc. If your end goal is to work 911 however i would only use this as a stepping stone before getting hired with a fire department etc. Because honestly in private ems you are NOT going to use nearly as many skills as 911 (often times you will feel like a sleep deprived uber driver)

I started on the ambulance, I then went into security as a security EMT granted I loved the rig but also love the security side of things. But I know I'm headed back to the ambulance soon
I was in a rural county where I worked for private EMS that covered the whole county, we actually stayed with the fire department in their stations for the most part and responded with them.

Learned a ton working at an Urgent Care Center, we got some surprising patients in there. The Doctors were great and gave plenty of autonomy to initiate care based on what was presented.
“Patient in room 4 with chest pain, already started oxygen and did the 12-lead, here it is.”
“Patient in 2 with high fever and productive cough, CBC already done and WBCs are high”
    “Cool thanks bro”

@@ArielShootsClips The best thing to do, is go to a community college and obtain your EMT. Depending on how the classes and college works, they can sometimes be paid for via FAFSA, otherwise you have to pay for school yourself. Mine was like $300 a month with a payment plan, for 6 or 7 months of payment.
While youre in school for the 5 months, network network network. Talk to every instructor you can, talk to your classmates. Ask them about search and rescue, different career paths, ask what they did and the path they took

I'm on the big island of hawaii, and I'm struggling to find a course that is actually open. There are a lot of advertisements for emt training, but after further research, these programs are not functioning regularly, if at all. QUESTION - Could I purchase a course and just take the test without going through a traditional school? Am I likely to get hired if I go that route?
