Working on it! (Might take me a bit though)
I love this love Bill Evans, and this is the best practice set up that I’ve ever seen. Thank you so much. 0:51
Thank you for your kind words Bill!
Kinda happy I’ve just discovered your CZcams channel, Juan. Always amazed how generous people are sharing their talent with others.
Welcome to the channel :)
Thank you Juan Ortiz. My resolution: to Faithfully read through these beautiful exercises daily,
and to allow myself the delicious pleasure of sometimes focusing on each one numbered exercise ,
taking it through every key, until these basic movements and shapes of music become my internalized friends !
As I do this, I recognize parts of music I have always loved: Bud Powell's "Parisian Thoroughfare," Bill Evans' solo "Like Somerone in Love," just to pick 2 examples, and yes as Brett comments, the Block chords of Shearing, Buckner, and everyone else live in the later exercises- and drop 2 is nearby ! This is great !
Makes me really happy to hear from my viewers that my videos help them get closer to their instruments.
In these exercises there are many influences. Especially Barry Harris and Bill Evans but as you and Brett mentioned there is also Powell and Shearing, and a very long list of other Giants that used these kind of harmonic resources.
Happy practice my friend, and thank you for being here :)
Beautiful & heartwarming, even though they are just exercises! The harmonious nature of these movements lend credence to Barry Harris’ description of the families as “God, Adam & Eve, & the 12 Disciples”‼️😎
Glad you liked it!
Absolutely important exercise. Do it through 12 keys and you gain an understanding of how keys function
Couldn’t agree more 🥸🎹
Love you much
Some of the best 6th Diminished exercises I've seen!

Juan muchas gracias por el trabajo que has pasado en pasar esto a partitura. Realmente se agradece.

Glad you found it helpful! 🙂
Great ! Thanks 💚
I sending you Many many thanks for this!!! ❤
You are very very welcome!
Excellent Mr. Ortiz
Thank you so much!
This was helpful and fun! I also hear George Shearing in the later exercises!
Thank you Brett!
May I suggest that every musician out there, play like yourself. So much of what's posted on CZcams promotes the art of imitation as originality is close to being a thing of the past or more accurately speaking it has become a thing of the past.
Hi Jan, thank you for your comment.
You have a good point: "every musician out there, play like yourself". It's a great point! And I always encourage my students to do so. However, in the process of finding your own voice, there needs to be hard work understanding the roots and the mechanics that geniuses from the past figured out before us. It's not only imitation as you point out. It's honouring our musical heroes, and a sign of respect towards the work that they put into the music. Understanding the past helps us developing the future.

Thank you!! I feel this video is going to open new doors for my composition skills.
Happy to hear that!!
Great content! This is a really excellent set of exercises.
Thank you very much!

Easily the best lessons I've found for beginners, though it quickly ramps up and I'd think this would also be great for better players than me. After 5 minutes I actually sound like I can play, even though these are 'just' exercises. I advise getting the transcriptions which include every key. Fantastic quality and detail for £8.35 / $10. Should keep me off the streets for a month at least, learning every key. Thank you Juan.
The whole point of this channel is to try to get people closer to their instruments. That makes me really happy, so thank you so much for your kind comment. I'll work harder to bring the best content I can for all of you. ❤
Man, I’m hooked with your channel!
Happy to hear that Oscar! I hope it helps you get closer to your musical goals 🎹
Absolutely!
0:32 was also used by Beethoven in the 3rd movement of Sonata Pathetique ;)

Glad you liked it!

Sigue practicando!

finding good excercise for guitar if not used to flipping that 7 or 3 to next octave
Thanks so very much to create and post this page. I am somewhat and "advanced beginner" at the piano and I am able to practice well but with my own fingering. I would like to ask you whether you think your fingering (quite challenging) is important for these exercises. Any recommendations, thanks.
Thank you for your kind comment, I'm glad you enjoyed the video :)
About fingering, it totally depends (on the person, background, hand size, technique abilities...). Basically: As long as what you play sounds good, you shouldn't worry too much.
Best!
👌
can you make a vid about practicing?
Hi! Do you mean general practicing or anything in particular?
Thanks much! Great exercise from the great masters! Could you show or name a tune in which either of these exercises are performed? Thanks again! Very informative!🎹
Hi Alec, thank you for your question.
I don't have specific examples.
These exercises are taken from isolated harmonic movements, and through the entire range of the major scale. Ascending and descending sometimes change.
I did a lot of research from Barry Harris, Bill Evans, Bud Powell, etc. piano solo transcriptions I have made through the years (plus things I already knew were important to have in your fingertips).
I also "transformed" some of the simpler movements into more complex ones for better and stronger practice sessions.
I hope this helps,
Best!
J
It does! The implication of this, as I see it, will be upon my individual piano interpretation and performance, after I practice, practice and practice! Thx J
Thank you for the excellent material. Do you have any similar material for the Blues form? I did not see any on the web site. Thank you!
Thank you so much!! 🙏
The video called “The Red Garland Book” gravitates towards a Blues Form but I’m planning to upload something more specific in a few months.
Best!
@@JuanOrtizPiano excellent! I bought the RG material too. Really love the beautiful excercise’s. Practicing them every day!
Thank you so much!! I’m glad you are enjoying the exercises, more soon!!
😊
Muchas gracias!
Wow, fuck hanon this is the stuff people should be practicing!
Thank you!! 🙏
(I still practice Hanon though 😊🎹)
Oscar Peterson's don't get around much anymore is a great example of a practical use of that diminished 6 scale
Great example!
Hi Juan, I love these exercises of Barry Harris and jazz warm-ups. Do you have a book on Barry's theory? I would like to purchase it if you do. I have looked for one and there doesn't seem to be any. $12.00 a page is pricey for me and I'd like to buy the book. Thanx.
Hi Valerie, thank you for your comment. I don't have a book on Barry's theory, this is the closest I have regarding that. Also, the book is not $12.00 a page, that's the price for the entire book (48 pages). Hope this helps, Best!
J
Great video.
What context do you use the voicings in this diatonic manner?
Anyone can help with this. Tanx!!
Hi!
There are many ways you can apply these exercises while playing jazz standards (or other styles). They work especially well while accompanying singers or soloists, or while playing piano solo.
You can use them as part of improvisations or in between solo lines to add some flavour.
Hope this helps!
Lots of songs keep with diatonic chords or are close to doing so. Some have large portions that do, then may switch keys and do it again. If I remember, Solar by Miles Davis has the same pattern with diatonic chords in 3 keys.
Obviously you won't just play the exercise in a song, but especially with the circle on fifths, you might be able to do a few chords just like this over a ii-v-i or something.
I haven't practiced any of these exercises yet, but after playing through some of these, I plan to pull out a simple song and just play with doing similar/identical voicings to one or two of these. Probably Take the A Train because I know it with my one-hand voicings so well. I'll have to figure out what to do with the altered chord, but even there, I feel like these exercises will give me a great starting point to figure something out.
I don't want to use paypal. can you give me another way to buy your pdf?
Hi! Please email me at juanortiz.jazzpiano@gmail.com
how do you make music out of these exercises?
Great question!
What I usually tell my students, is that you should take these kind of routines as "ingredients" in your musical kitchen.
The fact that you have them doesn't necessarily mean that you HAVE to use them.
Learn them to grow your vocabulary first if you are not familiar with them.
Later, use them combined with other "ingredients" you have in your vocabulary, so your accompaniments and solos sound richer.
Hope this helps!
