On "My Car Story" we're in the West Suburbs of Chicago IL on 9-2-20.
We're looking at a 1966 Buick Riviera GS Gran Sport in Shadow Turquoise Paint. The car comes with the factory 425 CI V8 “MZ code” engine with dual quad carburation producing 360 HP.
The car's Owner is Dennis Doerge. Dennis has had this car since 2015. He shares his interest in this car came from the rarity of the car. This car is a GS, Dual Quad, Super Wildcat Riviera, with high horse power MZ code engine and is 1 of 179 produced in 1966 from the factory. This car has been restored and looks “showroom” new.

And Lou, really didn't like talking about the MPG. In the city, i8t was more like 9MPG! Let's just say that the Riv. never saw a gas station it didn't like! HaHa My '66 didn't have the GS option but I did have some options that a lot of others didn't have. I had the up graded radio with a stereo multiplex unit attached. I installed a rear window "defogger" fan. A 8 track tape player also added. (plug and play). A four way flasher was installed under the dash near the parking brake release. Later, Delco air shocks in the rear along with Michelin tires. Made a huge improvement in highway ride. For winter time, steel wheels and wheel covers. Cleaning those chrome wheels just once was enough for me. BHTW, mine was Riviera Gold and black interior.

Joe - completely different - this was the last year of the “nail-head” Buick dating back to 1953 but just the 2nd year for the new Olds - Buick replaced it in ‘67 with the all new 430 which became the 455 -- this one retains the classic Riv looks but with a really good transmission the earlier ones needed

    Done deal, pal. Thanks again.
Back in 66 my dad would load us up to visit his parents @ Coral gables. The I-95 didn't go all the way like now. @ times we would drive a 3lane interstate highway. The middle lane would be the Passing lane when it was announced. My dad would gun that Riviera GS & @ times he would take some cars that was passing because they weren't passing fast enough. B4 Nixon made 55mph the national speed limit. I remembered 70mph was about the norm on the interstate highways from north to south. My dad would be many times the only 1 awake. That car was sooo quiet, smooth, comfortable & dad made us wear the lap belts. The trunk was bigger than some studio apmts in NYC. Again Lou, thanks for bringing that memories. When you get a 70Buick Riviera GS, I'll be on your page that was the next car he got. Njoy

This year, however, is beautiful from all angles especially the front and rear. Lou you did a great job on the interior especially how you featured the beautiful console and shifter. I think it may have had a rear window defroster. There may have been some features unique to this rare Riviera that were missed. Yet another magnificent example of what an American automobile SHOULD BE! As an 'Old timer' of the Baby Boomer Gen., I still cling to the more mechanical and less computerized classic American cars, this rare and beautiful beast is right up my alley! That Buick 425-ci V8 'MZ code' power plant with dual-quad carbs, producing *WAY MORE* than 360 advertised horsepower; more like 460-475-hp in reality, is a dream come true! My Roman-born grandmother, who had driven mainly little, under-powered Fiat's in her native Italy, bought a Wildcat in '66; imagine going from those little Italian Matchbox cars to a new '66 Buick, Wildcat! She paid much less than the $3,700 Monroney sticker price for it because my father went alone with her to buy the car. Grandma trusted Pop to get all of the proper option packages and, of course, a good price, since her English wasn't the best at the time. Pop ordered it with the vaunted 425-ci with the single Rochester '4MC' 4-bbl carb. with an advertised, "340-BHP @ 4400 RPM"; which, of course was a low-ball estimate for insurance purposes; it was, in reality more like 400-plus horsepower. If I remember correctly her Wildcat had a standard 3-gear transmission. As usual, great stuff, Lou. Thank you very much!

Another rare and gorgeous Riviera GS. Just like Michaelangelo's work of Art, great body line, smooth rev, very classic. Slick, curve rear body. If i have one right now, Lou you'll be the first one on my bucket list to critique. I grew up in the 70s during the muscle car era, I love muscle cars.

A stunning beauty!! Even the license plate is matching! The "S" on the California plates were issued in 1966, and the registration decals on the California plate are original, as well! 1966 for the yellow tag, and 1967 for the blue one on the rear plate. My first car was a '66 GS with the dual quads, in some beige-like flavor. Bought it from an older lady who never drove it properly, so when my 16-year-old lead foot started blowing the carbon out, the problems started; sold it and bought a new 914. Almost 50 years later, wish I still had both of them.

Lou, i enjoyed watching your show. My Mom and Dad used to have a '65 Chevy malibu hard top, 3-spd, I believed it was a either a 296 or 396 engine, don't know how many HP. I was barely young in my grade school days back in the early 70s.We could've kept it, after dad's passing and possible brought it here in the States. Dad was in the military and retired in Philippines.I've been here many decades now and continuously watching auto auctions, online and physical, and of course car shows, your show is one of them and presentations on line and am enjoying it. I am a die hard muscle cars or hot rod and/or classic cars fanatic. I love the 60s and 70s cars, i liked them all regardless of what brand and models. Ironically, as getting older, i focused myself onto European TR7, alfa romeo, porsche and now for the past 15 years, I got tangled up again with my first love -- The American muscle cars. i chat too much lol. Keep on running your show, good for your rating.

As you say, Lou, this car's got it all, including a spectacular color! It definitely commands attention, for all the reasons you mentioned! That speedometer is way cool (the Olds Toronado had it too), and it's interesting how Buick created a hidden headlight system without using flip-up doors, which now that I think about it, would ensure you would always be able to use them since you would never have to worry about headlight doors being stuck closed.
Many thanks to you and Dennis for this Gran Sporty ride!

Lou, let me ask you something? Just between you, me, and everyone on the internet, why don't you have your own TV show or weekly radio show on NPR? Seriously man? This posting of this magnificent Riviera GS is amazing! What a beauty! When I was growing up in New Jersey I lived in a very suburban town where many of us kids walked to school. On rainy days the Mothers in the neighborhood would car-pool us kids to school in cars...at the time my Mom had her '64 Falcon Futura sedan, Mrs. Bensley had a '65 Country Squire, Mrs. Courey drove a Chrysler New Yorker, Mrs. Aber had a '67 Plymouth GTX, Mrs. Nametko always drove a Coupe de Ville, and Mrs. Merkel had a '66 Buick Riviera! One morning after dropping us at school, she did some grocery shopping and returned home. Pulling the Riviera up to the garage door of their home, she stepped on the brake of the car and searched in her purse for the door "clicker". Suddenly her flip-flop clad food slipped off the brake pedal and on to the gas pedal and VAROOOOM, she drove clean through the garage door, through the downstairs den, and out the other side of the house! True story! :) Thanks for posting this!

Goodday Lou, this is what I love about your video's. You get to see beautiful classic cars like this Buick Riviera GS, that even I didn't know it existed. I have say about 60 odd books in my library dedicated to classic muscle cars. Nothing in there about a 1966 Buick Riviera GS, 425 cubic inch, dual quads, 360 HP. If it wasn't for you I wouldn't of been the wiser. Always learning something new on your show, & that can only be a good thing.
