I have loved the style of the Ducati Monster ever since I got into motorcycles. The Trellis really was eye-catching and distinctive. But the lightness and Panigale-ness of the front-frame is pretty awesome too. And now looking at the 20/21 Monsters next to each other, the Trellis does look a little dated.
I recently bought a 2019 821 in red (new). I wanted the 937, but I would need the lowering kit. And besides, my dealer is still waiting on more bikes? So the 821 is good for now. The 937 saved 40 lbs with the re-design, that's a lot!.But I agree with you; the 937 is the better bike!

Ah buddy, I can't bring myself to agree with you (though can't dispute any of the points you made) - I got into riding because I saw a Ducati Monster once when I was younger, it had a red frame and twin exhausts, I could see the engine and it made a racket that made me grin ear to ear. I bough my first Monster 2 years after getting my license but was surprised at how smooth the 796 was, the 821 seemed smoother still - it didn't have the 'rough and ready' character that I imagined it would. I feel like by chasing efficiencies they may be losing character - its the reason why as impressive as the Japanese roadsters are, I'm not drawn to them. It's the reason I didn't fall in love with the parallel twin in the 790 duke - I want my Monsters to be monstrous!
Definitely correct 'Bob'. Excellent video......nice to see a contributor who 'adds' something, instead of just replaying the Ducati promo footage. Trellis frames are for roses to grow on and the 'love the ancient mafia' would have us all riding in horses and carts - guys - look what happened to Harley with their antiquated styling and think (!). The first Ducati (seeing as I am not limber enough to ride something like a Panigale) to tempt me away from Honda - that's saying something - and is bound to win over newer riders. We need to encourage new riders not subject them to a museum trip!
I liked it so much I called my Yamaha dealer and told them I didn’t want my MT-07 anymore and I managed to get all my money back. I think it blows them out of the water... maybe not in price but but on pretty much every other comparison! 😍😍😍
I’ve owned the 2003 Monster as my first bike ever. Then a 2011 Monster. Then a 2008 Sport Classic and a 2009 GT1000. I LOVE Monsters. The frame is iconic. Sad to see it go. This bike looks cheap and doesn’t stand out to me. Maybe time will change my opinion, but that’s my first impression.
Great video and some nice technical advices on the new Monster. But.... think I come into the die hard old school style of Ducati owner, because I love the look of the trellis frame and definitely will not be trading in my gorgeous 812 Stripe for one of these. But, each to their own, and maybe I'll come around to liking it in a couple of years.
It’s great! As regards the styling, without the “Trellis” it still has the style, as with a lot of manufacturers, “If you don’t progress you finish up standing still”. This new Monster 👍👍👍
Looks great but if you live somewhere hot witth dense traffic i’d check that the engine heat is bearable. On other models like my scrambler full throttle and the hyper motards are like sitting on a pizza oven.
I love it. Put down a deposit for my very own 2 days ago. Style is important to me too, and I love a trellis frame on a bike as much as anyone. But even without it, this Monster is still the best looking bike in it's class.
So people are only complaining about the looks. All they had to do was paint the aluminium frame red to mimic the look of the red trellis frame. A little bit of red to make it pop and enough people would be satisfied
Luckily, the Monster did keep it's Desmo valves. That's good enough for me. Now the Multi loosing single sided swing arm, desmo valves, 17' front wheel and the trellis frame. Too much to stomach at the moment.
@@wirenut3020 Desmo valves are only outdated on the mildly tuned Testastretta engines. They are very much relevant in the V4 superbike that can rev 1000rpm higher than its competitors in WSBK. Literally had to cut their top end to keep things competitive.
@@wirenut3020 Not sure, the GP bike may use pneumatic. Only thing better than Desmo for high RPM valve actuation is pneumatic. Ducati was just artificially handicapping themselves for years in WSBK running 2 cylinders vs 4. Desmo helped them get that 10th tenth out of those engines though.
I think I read an article by Kevin Cameron in Cycleworld about valve springs and their early problems....it’s oscillations and breakage. I think he had stated that the desmodromic system was once an advantage but that it wasn’t needed anymore given the reliability of the current valve springs. I figured Ducati had accepted the reality of that to extend their valve train adjustment mileage to 18,000 miles, and because of that, the new monster is looking better to me as possible owner. I’m all over the place right now with what may be my next bike.......a good problem to have..I think!
I’m so glad the MT-07 was available for Ducati to design their new Monster from. The tank and side profile are near copies. Oh, oh, but.....since the all time best and most versatile naked, the MT- still has a steel tubular frame, does that make the Yami more European than the Dumster?🤣 Probably not since the MT is 100% built in Japan. And we all know the difference between Japan bikes and European bikes- European bikes have built in GPS to their nearest service center.✌🏻
Fantastic in every aspect, they should have done it long time ago. I had three monsters in the past, this one is amazing, lets hope it delivers the goods as good as it looks. Bravo Ducati, if this bike is as good as they say, I will buy it.
What's bold about that? It just makes it blend it even more in the production, looks like any other bike now and the character is also slowly disappearing.
@@the_hippykiller22 15kg of weight has significant impact on acceleration. Even if one has bike just for posing, soon he will be frustrated that friends are faster on lights. Someone at Ducati had to make difficult decision. It doesn't need to be completely right, however they can adjust next years. Without this step, new/young people would go elsewhere... That's it.
Most people bitching about the looks have probably never owned a Monster anyway. I never liked the old trellis frame. I currently ride a Z800 and have been trying to decide between a Z900 or an MT09. I am now waiting to see one of these in the flesh at a dealer, but it has definitely moved to the top of my list.
With retro being all the rage these days, would it better for them to make the streetfighter range the modern naked performance range, and the monster the retro naked range?
If it had the trellis frame then people would just complain about the lack of power increase. Once you're on the bike it really doesn't matter. Modern aluminium frames offer more stability as well over a frame made of a bunch of simple trusses. Plus those stock pipes look really good
People that want an mt09 have already bought one. This is a step on the right direction but they’ll need to make a much longer leap to actually win some of those sales back.
As a retro-fetishised I am on the side of those who miss the trellis frame. In the Netherlands, this bike still comes down at €13500, not so affordable for many if you ask me.
Test rode this model couple of months back, some small windy roads and a stretch of freeway. I live in the tropics and it's hot and humid all year round. Power, yes, quite enough for me. Maneuverability, check. Fun, definitely. Looks... er, well... trellis aside, there's not much of a design identity that shouts out really positively at this point. Engine heat, most definitely, right side inner thigh, especially noticeable at a stop. Not that it'll fry anything, but it's hot even when the engine temp gauge reads just 90⁰C. My Yammie goes up to 105⁰C at stops, but I don't feel this kinda heat that the Monster emits, perhaps due to the engine placement. Anyways, it's good information on the reason Ducati headed this direction for the new model, may take a second look at it sometime.
I agree that it follows the original ethos of the Monster, and so in spirit is consistent with Monster moniker. But it just doesn't stand out like the old trellis frame Monster. And I feel like that visual impact is what made the Monster special. It was instantly recognizable. That's why I bought two over the years. Not because I wanted an Italian superbike on a diet/budget.
I had a Ducati monster 15 years ago and I sold it 2 years later it was a fun bike on uphill roads but when I was getting around town was a nightmare Ducati bikes have it's own personality at 360 degrees and premium specs there is not much to upgrade apart some styling part to make it yours because as performance the Monster has an engine with a lot of power I believe it's worth to get it for a test ride because if it's like it has been described those nightmares might become dreams again
Dude you sounded right there I have a 821 and you are for sure a “Motointellect” I’m gonna subscribe to you not only because I’m a motorcycle designer but really awesome content there bruh!!!
Forget about the Italian and British bikes. Japanese very reliable and not expensive. You pay almost double for the Name, we are not here to question :"Who is who", we are here to ride the bikes!!!
The problem is that no one rational would ever buy a ducati or italian bike that looks like any other japanese bike of the market. Cause without its heritage desing and personality what really is a ducati, u have the ktm duke with better performance for sure, and the kawa z900 and the mt 09 at a way lower price. So whats the selling point of this bike? Is it worth to destroy the soul of a bike just to make it a bit lighter.
Looks-wise it is a disaster. What is all that curled up black snake gobbledygook where the engine is supposed to be? Then, the rest of the styling is completely incohesive. The old one had a flavor and you either like it or you didn't. The new one is just a big mess with too many ideas gone wrong.
Thank you for spelling it out MotoBob, I really like this new Monster, however the motor is underpowered. Push up the power to 120bhp to actually compete/rival the ST765RS 890Duke MT09.
It's a good looking motorcycle and you make a strong argument for why the trellis frame has been ditched. It always takes time for customers to except and embrace design changes to a beloved model.
Good Vid ! the older entry level Monster 797 I believe , in my eyes was starting to look drab ( be interesting to see the monster sales figures ) and yes your right the monster needs to change however this bike looks a little bit of a mix , MV seem to have a good looking package but the prices are premium . Will be interesting to see how many new monsters are seen at bike meets in the future , keep up the good work Motobob enjoy your new 660!
I’ve driven Monsters for 17 years now and while I would love to drive a bike with all the modern toys, the new monsters have progressively become more and more like some kid’s idea of what a basic bike looks like. They’re not basic. The design is so fiddly it just isn’t pleasing to look at. Meanwhile, my 2006 R2S suddenly looks a lot more handsome than it did back when I bought it new. Is it crazy that I wanted the Aluminium monocoque chassis painted in red as an homage to the monster trellis of yesteryear
That would have been so much better, red frames are awesome.
I own a Monster 2020, the last batch of 25 years of development...gonna keep it because I love how it rides and looks. The new monster is totally different but it also looks great and fresh, I’m gonna buy it too next year and enjoy the best of two worlds!
This guy really knows how to get straight to the point, I knew nothing of the monster bikes and now I know what the hubub is about the new version. And he only took 8 minutes to hit all the detail nice job
It's not a Monster anymore. It's a Hipster. They've killed the Monster.
Love my 2016 1200s this doesn't make me want to change.
The previous version just had so much character! this one on the other hand in my opinion doesn't have the monster character, it would be better if they renamed it to Streetfighter V2
Exactly... this is the streetfighter V2
Loved the trellis frame but progress is KING!
A Ducati fan saying they don’t like change is like an ice cream fan saying they don’t like these new flavors. Ducati is cutting edge. Without cutting edge Ducati ceases to exist.
I WANT ONE! GORGEOUS! But. between the new Street Triple RS and this...I just don't know. Life is so hard sometimes!
I'm in the exact same situation!
@@jeffmattoxjr.4136 I have test driven the current Monster and the 2020 street triple RS , the Triumph is more fun to drive. If you can, test them out first !
I've come down on the side of the Speed Triple... bit more pricey, but approx 38 more HP and adjustable suspension... and NO desmo service...
Buy the Speed Triple, this so-called monster is horrible!!!
Modular production, the death of invidivality....
Who are you, John Britten?
@@stevenkelby2169 I wish, minus the cancer....
Modular production, the only way manufacturers can offer great products to an affordable price
This release is vile. Won’t be replacing my 821 with this crap.
Looks very nice. Sleek. Got to move with the times. Got to be open to change and progression or you just get left behind.. I am quite sure it will be a proper Ducati... Will be temperamental, expensive for parts, expensive to service, will break down, but at least it looks good.
RIP monster 🪦
I get excited every time motobob post a new video of a new bike. Been waiting for him to review the new Ducati Monster and now it’s here!
ill prefer the 821, i think is muscular, monsters dont need makeup
Same. They could have added a faux frame( made of very light weight pipes) on either side just for the aesthetics.
The monster has always been about the trellis frame design
@@yournemesis2454 if they’re going to put a fake trellis frame on it, I’d prefer they made it look like a dinosaur... like a T. rex doing 80 down the highway.
A year on and I’ve not seen a single one. I think that says it all! It’s really going to be interesting to see which direction they go to next.
Good point :)
5:18 get your facts correct,...no Panigale has ever had a trellis frame, every Panigale frame is cast
The V4 has a trellis frame, but other than that version, you are correct.
@@taitjones6310 No, your wrong,..all Panigales have cast frames, including the V4, it uses the engine as a stressed member and also doubles up to house the air filter , do you own a Panigale?
I suggest you go and have a good look under the petrol tank and you’ll clearly see it’s a cast frame 🤷🏻♂️!!
I have a 2020 Diavel 1260 S. But I want to get one of these too. I like the new design. Although at 6'1" 215lbs, not sure if I'm too big for it.
I totally love it, really can’t understand why some people are moaning onwards and upwards for Ducati.
Maybe time will change my opinion, but that’s my first impression.
had a monster 15 yrs ago. this is the first edition to make me want another. kudos. cant wait to see a bigger displacement option as well.
My gsxr1000k5 is 166kg dry!
Is that because your forks have snapped off at the headstock?😆
@@tigerick7291 just looked it up and the dry weight of the K5 is 166kg.. that's lighter than my 2010 street triple was 😯
Great video and some nice technical advices on the new Monster. But.... think I come into the die hard old school style of Ducati owner, because I love the look of the trellis frame and definitely will not be trading in my gorgeous 812 Stripe for one of these. But, each to their own, and maybe I'll come around to liking it in a couple of years.
It’s great! As regards the styling, without the “Trellis” it still has the style, as with a lot of manufacturers, “If you don’t progress you finish up standing still”. This new Monster 👍👍👍
Ducati Knows what they do
Looks great but if you live somewhere hot witth dense traffic i’d check that the engine heat is bearable. On other models like my scrambler full throttle and the hyper motards are like sitting on a pizza oven.
Monster 1993 to 2020. RIP
They don’t need outdated Desmo technology anymore, they need longer maintenance intervals and I believe this one has got 18,000 mile valve checks.
@@wirenut3020 Desmo valves are only outdated on the mildly tuned Testastretta engines. They are very much relevant in the V4 superbike that can rev 1000rpm higher than its competitors in WSBK. Literally had to cut their top end to keep things competitive.
I’d not heard that. Is that why the MotoGP Ducati’s are faster on the straights?
Oh, oh, but.....since the all time best and most versatile naked, the MT- still has a steel tubular frame, does that make the Yami more European than the Dumster?🤣
Probably not since the MT is 100% built in Japan. And we all know the difference between Japan bikes and European bikes- European bikes have built in GPS to their nearest service center.✌🏻
the tank lines come from the KTM imo
Fantastic in every aspect, they should have done it long time ago. I had three monsters in the past, this one is amazing, lets hope it delivers the goods as good as it looks. Bravo Ducati, if this bike is as good as they say, I will buy it.
It's time to move on from the trellis, it looks great, weight savings and more power. Nice work Ducati.
You nailed it! Looks great to me too.
Agree with all the positive points, but the trellis frame was really cool.
I prefer this one over the old one, good job Ducati!
No thanks. Was gonna buy a monster, but now that swartpillen is looking better.
They should’ve just made it a small capacity Street fighter and left the monster range going on the way it was.
Thank you for mature analysis and opinion regarding design change. In general I don't like Ducati much, however I appreciate bold decision they made.
Even the exhaust looks good.
I had a Ducati monster 15 years ago and I sold it 2 years later it was a fun bike on uphill roads but when I was getting around town was a nightmare Ducati bikes have it's own personality at 360 degrees and premium specs there is not much to upgrade apart some styling part to make it yours because as performance the Monster has an engine with a lot of power I believe it's worth to get it for a test ride because if it's like it has been described those nightmares might become dreams again
everybody is getting lost in the nostalgia of past designs instead of embracing and appreciating the new and bold models in the bike and car world.
It’s definitely different but still beautiful! Plus I’m sure the Duc Giant knows what they’re doin 🤓👍🏼
Beautiful bike in it's own right but I struggle to find the Monster's identity in this iteration.
Dude you sounded right there I have a 821 and you are for sure a “Motointellect” I’m gonna subscribe to you not only because I’m a motorcycle designer but really awesome content there bruh!!!
I have an 02 Ducati monster 750 S.I.e. She’s a lot of fun to ride but costly with repairs, even when done myself.
Headlight is very modern and distinctive imo. Bike looks good and refreshed but still looks monstery.
Forget about the Italian and British bikes. Japanese very reliable and not expensive. You pay almost double for the Name, we are not here to question :"Who is who", we are here to ride the bikes!!!
For get the frame
Its a better bike in every single ways what else do people really want
The problem is that no one rational would ever buy a ducati or italian bike that looks like any other japanese bike of the market. Cause without its heritage desing and personality what really is a ducati, u have the ktm duke with better performance for sure, and the kawa z900 and the mt 09 at a way lower price. So whats the selling point of this bike? Is it worth to destroy the soul of a bike just to make it a bit lighter.
was going to get a v2 streetfighter, but monster sp is the one now
Looks-wise it is a disaster. What is all that curled up black snake gobbledygook where the engine is supposed to be? Then, the rest of the styling is completely incohesive. The old one had a flavor and you either like it or you didn't. The new one is just a big mess with too many ideas gone wrong.
Now Its just Ducati , without "Monster".
It’s simple, basic, well proportioned and without unnecessary bits.
I think my next bike might be a BMW R nineT. Preferably the Racer. If I want something fast and cheap I can always get a Japanese bike. They’re brilliant at what they do. But I like bikes that look good.
If people like the new monster that’s fine by me. But it isn’t for me.
