Minari is a plant used in many traditional Korean dishes, as soon as it dies it grows back stronger. A vegetable that can grow just about anywhere, a great use of symbolism representing Korean immigrants who can settle anywhere. This movie summarizes a life lived by first generation immigrant families of America. There is just as much selfishness in our parents struggles as there was selflessness. We long to see them succeed. David’s relationship with Grandma depicts great isolation that poc children create with their heritage and identity. “She is not a real grandma.” “She doesn’t bake cookies.” (Stereotyping a classic White-American Grandmother) “Grandma smells like Korea.”
This film effortlessly, and oh so beautifully, embodies, and encapsulates the American Dream.

This movie hit me soooo hard. I'm half korean by my father's side and I gotta say there is a huge existencial void in my life - that I never knew I had before watching Minari. My dad never bothered to teach me or my sister how to speak korean (also he's not such a nice person and like Jacob my father's greed put us in such a vulnerable place while growing up).
Anyways, me and my sister couldn't communicate with our grandma (halmoni) as we wanted due to the language barrier.
She passed away two years ago and I still can't get pass the grief. Now that I'm older I can understand how hurtful it must have been for her not being able to interact with us as much as she wanted nor presenting korean culture.
My grandma was an amazing and strong woman. She was born in North Korean and scaped the war when she was only a teenager.
At the beginning of this month grandma came to me during a dream so happy to see me but she asked me if I could start studying korean anytime soon so we could talk more and she would love to help me. So I started my korean classes and I'm studying and watching all the contents I possibly can about Korean culture in hopes to reconnnect with
Now I'm here crying while watching you guys react to this movie. Thank you for being so sensitive as usual.

fun fact! steven yeun was the first asian actor to EVER be nominated for best actor at the oscar’s bc of his performance in this film :-) insane that it took so long, but he absolutely deserved it. i always knew he was talented, but he rlly knocked it out of the park in this
i totally get what you mean about being conditioned into expecting the absolute worst out of dramas in the discussion at the end, i always say something similar when i recommend this movie to ppl!! like, it’s still so beautiful and raw and grounded even without insane tragedy, and the tough things that happen still HAVE weight and ARE devastating, but it’s because of what they mean for this specific family that we’ve grown to care for and root for as an audience, not because they just threw in the most objectively terrible thing that could happen regardless of who you are

Glad you guys covered this film! It's beautiful in its simplicity and portrays the complex family dynamics in such a raw way. It's filled with quiet moments and struggles that first generation immigrants often face. The scene where Monica cries over chili powder and anchovies from Korea comes to mind. Something that may appear silly to cry over initially, but it brings Monica great comfort and joy, as those particular ingredients aren't as accessible to her in Arkansas, but are often used in Korean cuisine. It's something that's both familiar and comforting, along with the arrival of her mom, in a space that still feels so foreign and daunting to her. I remember reading an article about how ethnic supermarkets are often one of the first spaces of comfort for immigrants, as they provide the sights, scents and nourishment that are familiar and reminiscent of their home countries ✨

But theres also happiness, sadness and so many more feelings inbetween all blended into each other so...naturally. hence this reality TV feeling. Its a unique slice of a very familiar and relatable experience which earns it its critical acclaim. Not the plot, but just the ability of screenplay to capture reality

I'm pretty sure I recommended this, THANK YOU so much for watching it! I had hoped you would enjoy the family aspect of the story. And of course, Steven Yeun 💙 It made me feel like I wanted to spend more time with my family. I wanted to make sure you all got a taste of how versatile A24 can get. I promise they don't only traumatize the audience, they love focusing on deep storytelling.
Monica's quote about Jacob choosing the farm over the family was so impactful. And then during the fire, it clicks for her when she goes to try to save the farm with him.
Then David finally runs after Grandma showing that physically he's getting stronger since his heart is getting stronger. To show Grandma that he thinks of her as his Grandma now. The fire reunited their family's bond and strengthened them both individually and as a unit. This was perfectly shown by them finally sleeping together on the floor which they refused to do at the beginning of the film.
It was so grounded in reality and as you said, if you look at other people's lives you probably know someone who's been through something similar.
I am not Korean but I know in a lot of different Asian cultures they heavily emphasize food as a means of bringing their families together. I've seen and heard of so many instances where they will just travel with spices and certain authentic foods that they've prepared for their family members who are in America. Who can't easily access the authentic versions. I know quite a few people who bring things like authentic kimchi over to their family members, I've seen a video of a girl unpackaging it after it was sent to her from her parents or grandparents.
In Asian cultures, they LOVE communal meals such as hotpots. Where everyone sits around a table and enjoys it together. In the US we tend to just order a meal for ourselves and that's it. We eat our own meals and don't really share as much. In Asian cultures, they order meals for the entire table. That's why when you order at more authentic Asian restaurants they bring you a lot of food and then they give you smaller plates on the side. You are supposed to take some of each meal and transfer it onto the smaller plate so that you are grabbing some of everything because you are supposed to use the smaller plates to eat off of. It makes the entire meal more of a bonding experience instead of a self-centered one. You actually have to communicate with one another if you need a dish passed to you, and you learn how to share and only take the amounts you can eat because you need to save enough for everyone else to feed themselves as well. It also takes the burden off of the person preparing it because they can sit down to eat at the same time as everyone else.
I prepare meals for many family members and I'm always the last to be able to sit down, so my stuff is always cold/ I have to reheat it a bunch. I wish we valued communal meals more like Asian cultures do.
And randomly, the 1st time I ever heard that there was a job called Chicken Sexing was on Dirty Jobs with Mike Rowe.
