60103 "Flying Scotsman" powers through the Purbecks | Swanage Railway 22/10/2022

  • Appearing fresh from an intermediate overhaul, sole surviving A3 Class - 60103 "Flying Scotsman" would make a return to the Isle of Purbeck and the Swanage Railway, hauling passengers through the picturesque Dorset countryside.
    Operating over October 22nd - 26th, "Flying Scotsman" would be in service for 5 consecutive days, with each day seeing the locomotive make 5 non-stop return services over the Purbeck branch from Swanage to Norden and back. Complimenting 60103's services, a 'feeder' service would be operating alongside the Gresley pacific, taking passengers from Norden, Corfe Castle and Harmans Cross, to Swanage where they could alight for a service hauled by "Flying Scotsman". This 'feeder' service would feature 34028 Eddystone; a Swanage stalwart, and member of the Southern Locomotives Ltd stables.
    For the A3 pacific, this event also forms part of a large programme of events scheduled for "Flying Scotsman", to celebrate its centenary in 2023. As such, its visit to the Swanage Railway marks the locomotives first working visit to a heritage railway since the completion of its intermediate overhaul; which has seen the boiler tubes replaced, pistons and valves bored and lined, as well as other mechanical and cosmetic attention where required. On the day of filming, services ran late towards the end of the timetable, owing to teething issues with 60103.
    The visit would reunite the A3 with Pullman Observation Car - No14. Car No14 had traveled with "Flying Scotsman" to the USA from 1969-1971, on the locomotives' infamous tour of America. Also in the rake of 7 coaches behind 60103, would be two recently refurbished Maunsell Open Third carriages. Due to operational requirements, U Class - 31806 would perform a 'shunt and release' of 60103's services at Swanage; this is due to the run-around loop at Swanage only accomodating 5 carriages.
    Locomotives:
    Ex-LNER A3 Class - 60103 "Flying Scotsman"
    Ex-SR Rebuilt 'West Country' Class - 34028 "Eddystone"
    All footage filmed on Saturday the 22nd of October 2022.

    Thank you so much for another excellent video !. My grandson is a volunteer driver and fireman on the Swanage railway and was assisting firing on Flying Scotsman , he gives a quick wave at 13.04 - 13.18. Thanks again from a very proud Grandad in France !

    Your knowledge of the area, ability to get to viewpoints and vistas, for your super smooth pans, overcame the autumnal gloom and damp. Pity that the weather did not shine on the visitor for the late October visit.

    Also good to see the shots of 34028 Eddystone on the alternating service train. It seemed appropriate for them to be working the service together like "mother and daughter", given the Gresley-Bulleid connection and broad similarities. Really great to see all the lineside shots as I was helping at Swanage all day so only got to see FS starting from there and crossing the service train at Harmans Cross on the final inbound run. I like the shots from West Hill at Corfe - I have been up East Hill and the castle itself but that is another great vantage point.

    AAAHHHH!!!!! Its the Devon Belle Observation car! Omg! What a stunning car, glad they have it on Flyting Scotsman's train! That car is the reason I fell in love with the Swanage Railway. Lovely video and awesome railway. I'm always stunned at your amazing videos! Thank you for post!

      Yeah, never really understood the culture of advertising a locomotive for an event or railtour, when that loco is under overhaul at the time and no guarentee of being fit and ready by the deadline; unless there's been some behind the scenes testing/assurance.
      Was great to see Eddy out as well. Got very lucky with the sunrise.

    • @iankemp1131
      @iankemp1131 Před rokem

      @@TheSouthernerYTChannel The Swanage Railway sensibly didn't advertise the event until it was 100% certain that FS would be ready after its overhaul, although that did truncate the time for publicity and bookings. But it looks as if enough people found out!

      @@TheSouthernerYTChannel Indeed, kudos to the Swanage and FS staff who helped sort out some of the teething troubles on the spot, particularly before the 1505 departure. Must have been nerve-wracking with a full train of passengers sitting in the station waiting to leave! But they succeeded.

    Great to see these shots. One day left (Wednesday) of FS actually operating trains at Swanage, then she will be on static display until 6th November (you can go on to the footplate through the corridor tender). There were great scenes at Swanage too with a bagpiper and Alan Pegler's daughter waving the train away. The Devon Belle car looks magnificent inside and out and seems to have been well used.

    In my amateur way, it does seem dangerous for a train to pull carriages backwards; how can the driver know if, say, a tree has fallen across the track - or a cow escaped the field and wandered on to it. What am I missing here……..?

      Despite 'the Purbecks' not being an official title for the area, it is a frequently used modern colloquialism and understood well by the majority of people in the local area, so will be staying on the video.

    Sometimes I think that some of these people need reminding that when an engine pulls a train it's not meant to do so by it's teeth!!!!

    • @TheSouthernerYTChannel
      @TheSouthernerYTChannel  Před rokem

      It's worth remembering, this railway does not have a turntable large enough to accommodate a Pacific. Tender-first running is an operational relief.

      @@TheSouthernerYTChannel Point taken. The better option is to have an engine at each end. Not necessarily for every trio only when it's needed.
