  • Pain or poor posture while riding can be caused by a saddle that does not fit the rider. Saddles need to be built differently for men and women in order to fit correctly, as Jochen Schleese explains in this video.

    Excellent presentation of how the saddles are constructed. I'm 5'4", curvy hips, small waist and short lower leg. Everytime I rode a horse my knees felt like they'd been twisted! Thank you both for the education!!!

    This video is so important to every rider. I was riding in a male-built saddle and havent realised it until i watched this. It threw my leg forward, made me slouch back, and i couldnt get my heels down. I got a new saddle which is much wider on the seat and its fixed all my problems without me trying.

    As a human anatomist, this perfectly explains much of what I've struggled with my current saddle. It throws me back, I can't keep my legs under me, and on long rides, my sit bones kill me because they are right on the ridge of the seat. Apparently, if my sit bones were just a quarter inch narrower on each side, I'd be a man! I SO need a saddle made for a woman. Now if I could just find one that also fits my very big shouldered, flat backed horse!

    Great video. Would be even better if the videographer had zoomed in for certain shots...like the stirrups bars, male versus female saddles side by side, etc. Regardless, I learned even more than I'd already researched.

    Very interesting. Straight forward, logical and honest explanations for deviations from the standard mass produced saddles that have crippled many horses and riders and could be blamed for many fatal accidents. Love this :-)

    I own a Schleese Triumph and looooooove it!!!! It's pricey, but soooooo well worth it. Everyone who rides in it says how comfortable it is. My legs finally stretch down underneath me and it's comfortable. I also love the wither relief. This was the biggest sale point. I think they are the only company that has that special feature which removes the forward padding of the tree allowing for the movement of the shoulder.

    I have a question. I'm getting back into riding and not ready to buy a horse yet. I've been riding different school horses at my barn and taking lessons and using my trainers saddles. Would having my own saddle (that isn't fit for a specific horse) be helpful-especially with balance as I improve my riding skills? The horses I ride are all fairly similar build/height.

    • @junehansen9749
      @junehansen9749 Před 5 lety

      a sattle is not a universel tool, to similar horses can be to deferent sites of saddels, so no it will not, you will just do pain to the horses, the battle have to be fitting the horse, no horses fits same saddel, thats a myth.

      +haley minecraft lover Possibly it's because you're riding in a saddle made for a man with a twist that's too wide for your pelvis. The 'hip ache'(feeling pulled apart) is a very common indication of this.

    Hi there , I love your channel but i have a question about : So I ride a pony that is very very naughty and I've only been riding him for 4 days and fallen ( bucked ) of 3 times ... If anyone can help please share ...he usually is quite good on ground but sometimes he isn't on his back...😕

    • @annarisi6890
      @annarisi6890 Před 9 lety +2

      Zahra Suleman Hey there. My horse use to do the same. Someone might say some other advice but anyways. I did A LOT of ground work and got to know him before I tried to get on him after the first couple of times getting bucked off. I found teaching him a few manners on the ground first worked so much, aka leading, not to get into your personal space and other things like picking up the feet and being sensible while grooming (I can now lead and groom him with no lead rope). After you get comfortable with that I decided to tack him up and then un-tack him a few times every day (lead him/her around a little bit and go longer and longer). I also find patting on his back before tacking helped him to relax. Then after about a few weeks of doing that I started to tack him up and just stand on one side of the saddle for a while them move to the other side, thenafter a day or two stand on each side then sit on him for about 2min patting his neck then hopping off. (Make sure you phrase him/her heaps! and not to many treats XD). This all took me over 2 months to do as I was uncomfortable around horses, so you might be able to do it a lot faster then me XD. Me and my boy get on so well now, we have our tantrums lol but nothing to what we had before. He loves to explore and he went on his first hunt and did amazingly! Hope this helps =)

    • @sabineschleese1707
      @sabineschleese1707 Před 8 lety

      +Zahra Suleman Possibly it's because your saddle might be a bit long and impinging on the 'bucking reflex point' directly behind the 18th thoracic vertebra

  • @airnt
    @airnt Před 7 lety +3

    now i understand that this is helping a lot of people, and that is great, but i do like to add a few things:
    -Xenophon did not ride on a saddle and he does not describe the modern seat nessesarily if you actually read his writings... (the desciption is of throwing a spear, btw)
    -historical saddles are often VERY narrow in the twist, especially for cavalry use, in particular for the shock cavalry where collection was still a life and death requirement
    -the balance of the seatbone is not as important as the angle of the femur and hipsockets, the position in the saddle for most people is defined by the flexibility of the system with the motion of the horse, how much is your inertia affected?
    as a result the narrow twist is more effective than the relief of the front of the seat
    -many women i teach love my replica bravante saddle...(15th century war saddle) which is hard (wood) narrow, high in front... but has an exceptionally narrow twist... this is good for both men and women.
    - there are historical saddles (ca 1400) where the stirrup attachement has two positions that can be shifted during the ride, even when riding in full armour. these are quite far back, in fact most cavalry saddles have the stirrups quite far back. Especially the steppe peoples like cossacks and the like have their stirrup attachement far back because they stand in the stirrups a lot.
    -a lot of historical saddle (hungarian, rusiian, madrid saddle, socalled Henry V saddle, hohenzeuggestechsaddles) have a wide tiwst but an elevated and narrow seat, this means the upper leg can have a narrow angle. this made sense with tall riders on tiny horses, this is a factor we need to consider... the relative length of the femur of the rider to the width of the horses chest.
    we now have small girls ride huge warmbloods... this is as much a difference between traditional saddlery as the gender shift.
    all in all i can see your point and agree with a lot of it, but i also see women buy 'saddles for women' and they can come with very high arched cantles and recessed and low seats... they tend to tip riders forward and immobilise the hips.
    most of the things you talk about are very modern ideas comparatively, and modern problems,
    the points you make are partly just 'better saddles' and not 'better saddles for women'
    but hey, that is a good thing, right?
