RockShox Fork Lineup Explained! | What Are The Differences?

  • In today’s video, I’m going to be explaining the entire Rockshox fork lineup! Now unlike Fox, RockShox has not made it easy to remember which fork is for what. That’s why this video is going to be as straightforward and simple as possible and is to be used as a basic jumping-off point rather than a 30-minute in-depth guide. Rockshox offers around a million different forks but we’re only going to be covering the main 15, starting from xc short travel forks and ending with full downhill forks.

    I notice long term trends, (As we get older, we should.). In 95 when I was working in the manufacturing of Ti. Bikes (Nuke Proof when in Michigan), and riding a lot the 3" travel fork (about 80mm) was considered too long, to much movement for the frame geometry and bobbing when climbing. Full suspension and disk brake for XC? No way, never happen. :)
    Today they have around 5" of travel for XC, are not stiff, (some may still have lever on the fly lock outs, lie my old Duke 3" fork), and the head angles they worried about being slack from a taller fork,---ended up going to about 71 degrees to a very slack 65 degrees,---like a chopper.
    I can turn my little Nuke Proof on a dime compared to the modern chopper I also have. The Trek Marlin is a tank compared to old school. :)

    I think the downhill Boxer,---is the same name of the fork since they first made it decades ago. From the first fork, type/usage/style, to today, it is rare that up grades did not change the name.

    You forgot to mention that the first fork, the RockShox 30, is a fork for retro wheel "drop outs". But unfortunately, also only has disk brake mounts. Mistake for a large retro market).
    I guess with out V-brake mounts on the sliders, I would have had to rebuild my old Dukes anyway. Think again RockShox. Kids forget the past too quickly today, so it is harder to pick a good future direction. "Know where ya been, to know where you are going", kind of thing.

    Thank you for this.You have told me more than i could get from the supplier. I've just turned forty and bought a fathom 1, which came with the Rockshox 35 silver tk. I was told they were a upgrade to the Giant standard. But they are very soft and make a sucking noise. Any chance you can help?

    • @EverydayBiking
      @EverydayBiking  Před 3 lety +1

      Sounds like a setup issue. If it's too soft you can add more air or harden the compression on the damper. As for the sucking noise that's called top out and it's caused by having your rebound too fast. Hope this helped!

    • @Adam-vm8kp
      @Adam-vm8kp Před 2 lety

      @@EverydayBiking top out is not sucking. Top out knock is when the fork returns to full travel and hits the bumper. The noise is the oil moving around or the seals moving on the uppers and is normal, the 35 is a basic emulsion damper. If you don’t know how a fork works you shouldn’t be telling people the differences.

    You seem to know quite a bit about shocks. I'm doing a budget build and I need shocks. While I'm not intending to do any extreme jumping, I would like to do some jumps with it, and will probably ride this bike hard. (That's what she said). I weigh 220, I'm 6'2. What's the bare minimum shock I could get away with? I'm open to any brand. I was looking at the Recon silver RL but I don't think it's tough enough for what I would like to do, or is it? My price cap is $500 but I would like to spend less than that if I can.

      No need to. If you live in a country where their workshops are present, try to go to an NDTuned shop, they can make just about any fork feel and handle like a 1000€ fork, i took my Judy RL there and they replaced the paint on the stanchions, the damper and a few other internals and now it's more comfortable than a Rockshox Reba, and feels about the same as a Sid, just heavier

    • @Adam-vm8kp
      @Adam-vm8kp Před 2 lety +1

      A recon has a very basic emulsion damper. Going to a 35mm pike or lyrik will be stiffer with a much plusher damper, better seals, better air spring etc Ignore this other guy he has no idea, stanchions are not painted and you cannot get a cheap damper to operate like a top shelf one. Replacing the damper is normally not cost effective unless you can find a cheap 2nd hand. I used to have a pike and it’s a mint fork.

      @@TylersChannel1000 I believe the rockshox 35 is a great option for upgrading and just in general as a high performance budget fork. However you got to keep in mind, there are different versions of the 35, that being the 35 Gold rl and the silver tk. The silver has an option of a coil spring, or a solo air air spring, however the 35 Gold RL, has a debon air spring aswell as rockshox motion control dampening, it also gets aluminium stanchions, where the lower model 35s get steel stanchions. Big difference between the 35 gold, and 35 silver. If you were upgrading, its defined worth getting the 35 gold as it just performs much better!
