  • Minimalism isn't built on the idea that we should just get rid of stuff. Rather, it is a fundamental mind shift that be releasing physical things, emotional baggage, and more, we actually add to our lives in ways that are hard to ignore. Today, we will look at 10 simple ways Less is More in our lives.
Find me everywhere I am on the Internet here: timchilders.bio.link.
I started this channel in order to document life as it gets lived. It's about where I live, how I live, where I travel, why I travel, and so much more. Eclectic is a good word for the content to be found here. I hope you will come along for the ride!
    Affiliate and other monetization links:
Want to buy me a cup of coffee to keep the creative juices flowing? You can on my Ko-Fi account here: ko-fi.com/timchilders
Looking to buy camera gear and accessories for photography or video? Search Adorama, one of the largest in the world, with this affiliate link. If you buy something, I get a few pennies here and there: adorama.rfvk.net/oqB7zE
Wanting to get money back every time you buy gas (along with other purchases are online stores and restaurants)? Upside might be something you'd like to explore. Take a look around at their website at upside.com. Then, when you download the app, use code TIM22542 when you sign up.
Want to get money back when you go grocery shopping? Probably my biggest money saver. That's an app called iBotta. Use my referral code to sign up and start getting money back today! ibotta.onelink.me/iUfE/8cc13c...
Last, would you like to earn money back on nearly everything you purchase? You can probably find what your looking for at one of the stores represented by Rakuten. Choose from getting money back or getting American Express Reward Points. My link is www.rakuten.com/r/TCHILD175?eeid=28187

I’m a 49yo Aussie having constant thoughts about who am I, what have I got to show for all these years after failed businesses etc etc… I found myself glued to your video, there was so much simple, useful information which I found intriguing. Intriguing in its simplicity, I now realise I have a beautiful wife, 2 gorgeous adult
daughters and a best mate in my 15yo son, I actually have everything! Thanks for helping me see it.

Hi Tim - thank you for your channels & honest look at your life, inspiring & insightful.
Soo.. I have never related more to any post than this one. Last year with my 60th looming & after being a widow for 5 years I made some drastic changes that I now realize was a quest for simplicity. I shed the extra 80 lbs (via keto) I’d been dragging around for most of my adult life, quit the now soul sucking job I’d had for 10 years & treated myself to 6 month semi retirement to figure out who I am NOW.
I realized yesterday when I went to pick out a top for a date today, 1 of my options is now 4 sizes too big, has a loud print & deep v neck. It’s now headed for the resale shop. My choice for the date fits the simplicity that now is my life. A black Old Navy T shirt with rouched sides & a scoop neckline & jeans with simple, meaningful jewelry.
The life I was looking for is Simplicity. It is my jam now in ways it has never been, with my mental outlook, body, new boyfriend & future employment. I now live simply & flow on my own kayak that’s on my own river instead of following the masses. 😊

I so enjoy your videos. I am very - very - old and live alone and now have the simple life I love. I have many happy memories of my marriage, young children and holidays but love just being at home now.
I too get up early (but not as early as you!) and have my main meal in the early afternoon - and that is it. I try to drink plenty of water (and enjoy my coffee). Eating early means I always sleep well and am ready for the day (especially if the sun is shining!).
As you are still very young! just stick at what you are doing; my advice would be to eat smaller portions (a smaller dinner plate) and do eat fruit too.

I never married but older, have 80 lbs to lose and in a job over 10 yrs that is shortening my life with stress and overwork. Burdened with high housing costs. I too am seeking simplicity, yet to take action on some things but planning my path to a freer and simpler life. Congrats on all you've accomplished and what is yet to come.

Being 65 myself, I can appreciate everything you said in this video. I’m now on the road to less is more. All I can think about is what happens when I pass away and my adult children have to deal with my belongings. I’m determined to significantly pare down my possessions so in their grief, they aren’t stuck trying to go through my things. I’m an introvert and I’m fortunate enough to have mornings all to myself. It’s the quietest time of day around here so I get a lot done.

I listen to the bird song outside my house with so much more appreciation these days, since a houseguest marveled at it, because he didn’t have that where he comes from. I treasure the excitement of nesting birds each year. One year, a house wren
Couple built their nest in an empty plant pot on a shelf by our front porch. I still have a cute little video of the babies chirping, beaks wide-open, waiting for their next meal. We have had Cardinals build nest in a climbing rose over a door to the courtyard. Mockingbirds, of course, love the Yaupon trees for nesting. And in one special year, we had bluebirds - we had allowed a dead tree to stand for a while, and they love those “snags“ - I never saw the nest, just the evidence of bluebirds in different sizes. They kept wanting to come in the house, fluttering up to the window, probably to investigate a fake tree, not far from the window! I especially love Cedar Waxwings that come occasionally. Robins flock through in the spring time. Blue Jays are a joy, I don’t see as many now as I did in my childhood. Between the Birdsong and the antics of the squirrels, and the occasional rabbit and possum, life is exciting in the backyard!

The older I get, the less “stuff” I want. I always tell people not to buy me anything I have to dust!
I don’t have a headboard on my bed or bed skirts. To me that’s just something else to have to clean.
When I want to purchase something, I think, “Is this easy to clean?” “Do I want to clean this?”
Since I hand wash my dishes, I don’t buy cups, glasses, or mugs that I can’t fit my hand inside.

I feel the same way about every point, but I do have a wooden bedstead that is very basic and rocksolid. And I can disassemble it easily and move it and reassemble it myself as needed. Come to think of it, the mattress situation is the same way. Simple, non-toxic. Manageable.
My husband brought home some glasses that were narrower at the top then at the bottom and my hand didn't fit in. One by one they keep breaking, and I'm looking forward to win the last one goes! He really likes them😂!

One of the important things I learned during lock down was how wealthy I really am. I was driving way less, shopping way less, slowed down way more. I was filling the gas tank once a month. I could buy whatever I wanted to at the grocery store. We were lucky in that my husband is a CPA and I worked with him in the office, so we still had our usual work. I still drive much less than I used to. I shop so much less. I also do most of my food shopping here in town, even though some of the prices are higher. Now that we are retired I don't need the same type of wardrobe as before. I am a thrift store shopper and do that so much less. I love the treasure hunting, but by staying out of the shops, have much less temptation. MY treats are looking around when I drop off a box of things that I am down sizing. My daughter and i still do thrift visits together, but it is more about our combined joy than about bringing home lots of stuff. And by clearing up the stuff inside our home, I am finding new joy and a sense of satisfaction that I am hoping will grow into more peace and ease of cleaning. It is a worthy goal.

I have tried to embrace “less is more” in so many aspects of my life. I’ve been decluttering and eliminating so much. It makes me happy to see my linen closet decluttered, my basement starting to get decluttered as well as cutting down on buying crafting supplies. It’s a good feeling and makes me feel calmer and less stressed.

Great advice. 10 years ago I started living a minimal lifestyle. It’s ongoing and it’s a sense of freedom and peace. Living alone makes it easier than people that have families. I often see families that have hoards of clutter and are overwhelmed, but still unable to get rid of their stuff. One family comes to mind in particular. They have two children and a massive house that is beautiful but it’s disastrous with the amount of useless possessions. They won’t quit buying. Every day something new comes through the door. Whatever the newest thing is, they buy it, thinking it’s going to make their life better.
Thank you for your wisdom in “less is more”.

It’s taken a long time to realise that all my ‘stuff’ has kept me a prisoner. Like being attached by invisible strings to all the clutter. Having let go of a lot of possessions in the moving process it has definitely freed me from emotional attachment. ‘Letting go’ in a lot of aspects in life has been so freeing. Thank you.

In the consumerist world in which at a very young age we are pushed towards the idea that possessions = worth. Living with what is necessary sometimes upsets others especially in a family, I found out quickly I can not push others do live this way.
I came to understand that material possessions is many times a physical manifestation of what is going on inside.
So rather than minimalism I choose simplicity by removing the things that distracted and took time away from the things that I enjoyed.
Another great video. Have a great day.

The quiet is what I resonate with. I never have the radio on when I drive and rarely do I have the TV on. Maybe sometimes in the evening. I do however play at least 2 of my albums a day of mostly 60' & 70's music to keep me motivated on what project I am working on and sometimes when winding down after a busy day I will put on some easy listening in the evenings. The biggest change I have made is when I drink my coffee in the morning, I always drank it in front of the computer where I would find myself lingering for hours. Now I am going out on my porch, sitting quietly and listening to the birds. I have a more peaceful calm in my life now.

One of the things I am decluttering is the garden. As I redo the garden areas surrounding the home we moved to after we retired, I am only using a few types of interesting, low maintenance bushes in my design. I can cut back on the equipment that I need in my garden shed as well as the amount and types of fertilizers that need to be bought and stored. More time to enjoy the garden, less time maintaining it.

At some point we were expecting a hurricane and I realize just how much stuff was out in the yard. I decluttered all but the basic useful functional items from the yard. i've also had a general attitude that a plant cannot live in my yard unless it can survive more or less benign neglect. Every Season I enjoy taking little drives around my area to see what thrives and what doesn't… In the heat, after the worst of freezes. I notice what expensive Hardscapes go awry when people leave trees planted too close to them. I observe shrubs that get leggy and ugly because they're not maintained scrupulously. each season I try to do sensible things in the direction of low maintenance beauty. Some seasons don't work out because of injury or illness or lots of things going on in life. My good choices keep going, behaving well. And everywhere I have failed to clear things out, I am sorry that the delay has created more work for me. I wish someone had taught this to me from the very beginning.

So many good points and things to think about and improve. When you talked about gossip, I was reminded of a quote I heard once regarding gossip that went something like "Those who speak to you will also speak about you." Additionally, I've had two old timer friends in my life that refused to participate in gossip. They would listen , but never had a negative word to speak about anyone. Both of these individuals have passed on. They had many other positive qualities and were always seemingly in a good mood and quick to speak positively of others. I am approaching retirement myself and so much of what you talk about is relevant for me. I am getting rid of so much "clutter" in my life. It feels good to give some of my unneeded things to someone who either enjoys them or will put them to use. We live in a "noisy" world these days as you mentioned. Not only the audible, but the overwhelming visual noise that is also "clutter."Please keep up these worthwhile discussions. Your delivery makes it feel like a discussion or chat with a friend and I believe this is something many people respond positively to. Kindest regards

I use those features at my chosen time on my laptop at home. On my smartphone I answer to texts, and to phone calls I recognize. Everything else is quiet. Sorta by happenstance, but keeping it that way. If they really need me, they call me. Or leave me a message. I've enjoyed my boundaries and looking up at the world, rather than down at my phone. I am 74 now and seek less chaos in all aspects of my life. I want less, so I shop less. I no longer seek to be surrounded by people all the time, so I have learned to be content with the quiet hobbies that I enjoy. I still work a few hours a week, but I work by myself most of the time, so I am able to avoid workplace drama. I don't watch much tv and never watch the news or talking heads. I do, however, watch youtube videos and movies, although I am trying to limit exposure to all social media, specifically influencers. I have a home with many nooks and crannies and I am trying to stop procrastinating and start throwing stuff out 😂, so theres that. The truth is, all this stuff is creating chaos for me, but every time I start to think about clearing some of it out, the very thought of it is overwhelming.

Hello Tim, I very much enjoy❤ed this video. You are so right about all those things. I too retired forma teaching hob last year so much much of what you said resonated with me. Two months ago I moved from the big city (London) to a small coastal village in the south of England and boy have I had to learn to slow down. The local bus only runs once an hour and stops operating after 6pm so I have been walking much more. I shall be visiting a friend in Texas in a few weeks for a fortnight and the travel insurance was extortionate and I’m a healthy, medication-free adult but I’ve decided to focus on protein and healthy fats (full fat not low-fat or zero) and greatly reduce my sugar (the silent killer) intake in order to keep healthy should I want to visit the US or further afield in the future. Brisk walks on the beach very early in the morning give me time to be thankful to God for his blessings and to plan my day. Thank you for your words of wisdom.

Thank you for another meditation. After a little over a year of decluttering, dealing with loss and moving on, I have found that, "less is more", had become essential again in my life. I used to say it out loud when I was a young adult with unsettled living arrangements. I would imagine having to move anything I was considering purchasing. Marriage, rearing children, careers all buried that phrase, but as I was packing a vehicle for a trip, about 10 years ago, it kept popping into my head. I wrote it on a 3x5 card and put it where I could see it every day. This was before my husband and soul mate passed away and it helped me to start decluttering my life. I'm so thankful that I had started the process before I lost my spouse, because it has truly helped me declutter more than just physical stuff. As more leaves my home it stays neat and clean longer and it is easier to cook, do some maintenance or even to leave it for an adventure. My main motivation to keep going through all the accumulation of a lifetime is to leave less for our adult children to deal with when I am on to eternal life too. Gossip, I finally just offered one of my neighbors because she is a terrible gossip and I just did not want to listen to her anymore. I am not normally a rude person but sometimes it is necessary for your own peace. It is really nice to be able to work outside in the front yard and not have to deal with her. Her husband does not hold it against me 😊. A few of the neighbors told me she was spreading really bad gossip about me for a while and I would just say, it is worth it for peace. She has since moved on to nicer people that me. Thank you again for your videos, I like it when you leave me with lots of homework. You are the best teacher ❤😊

yes. Beagles are treated horrifically. and this is where ignoring the news (as many people suggest we do for our own peace of mind) allows evil to continue. Meanwhile, I'm responding to your comment and listening to this video while I procrastinate. This will be my last response this morning then. Don't forget what Dr. Fauci did, or under his leadership: they held beagles down with their heads pinned under a net and they let sand fleas attack their heads. Because they're curious. What would happen? And this is mild compared to the immoral and pretty much unlawful experimentation they did on Children: you can find the PDF of the journalists report online for free, it is called "the house that aids built." If we do nothing, decades go by and the same bad actors are continuing to do bad things. We need to pay attention to some of the stuff and call it out. I had no idea about this when it was going on! Neither did most of the people who followed this man's directions The last few years. And I can tell you as a nurse that it was backwards from the get-go.

Omg, I never knew that about beagles! That’s so sad. I love dogs, and unless they’re being used to test nutritious dog food or treats, this should be illegal.

I just love your videos. They’re just packed full of useful information for everyone. At the 14 minute mark, which is where I’m at right now you talk about driving without the radio and embracing the quiet. I am going to start taking it to heart. I’m either listening to the radio or a podcast or watching or listening to a CZcams video. I run and bike a lot and maybe I should just be quiet and be still while I’m doing it. Thank you.

It's fascinating how simplifying one's lifestyle can amplify focus and fulfillment, truly embodying the essence of 'less is more.' 👌

We sold both our houses-"starter" home we lived in for 28 years and our beautiful lake house we had for 20 years and bought a beautiful 1 story house close to my brother in law. It was a lot of work to get rid of all that stuff and I don't want to fill up this house. I do have too many clothes and accessories so I have to stop that shopping. Too much stuff is stressful.

This planet is a gift and it makes me so sad to see how we are treating it and I can’t even imagine what it’ll be like for future generations. I never liked futuristic movies, like Mad Max, because I would hate to live in a world like that and I feel like that’s what it’s becoming, as extreme as that sounds. Reducing stress is a big thing for me right now, as I’m sure with many people. I’m trying to learn to breathe and remind myself to just do what I can do when I’m standing, with my one or two reusable grocery bags, behind someone that has a cart full of plastic grocery bags. I am trying to do better at so many of the other things that you mentioned as well. Thanks for the video! Oh man, the coffee thing. I think people want to like coffee but have to dress it up so much to enjoy it or they really just want dessert! 😂

Exactly! First time watcher and subscriber. Have been on the journey to simplifying our lives for almost 3 years. Life changing! What started just in decluttering my sentimental items lead me more and more into the ideas of minimalism. My husband and I got rid of over 60% of what we owned and it allowed us to sell our home and move to another state to be able to afford a home without a mortgage so my husband could retire from his construction job which had deteriorated his body. Now, we are purposeful with what we bring into our home and the space and neatness is so stress relieving. Food addict…yes! The Keto lifestyle was best for my mental and physical health and I’m working my way back to it. Mental and emotional stability in addition to a huge weight loss. All of the things you talked about have been so beneficial in my life. Glad to find another ‘mature’ adult talking about the benefits of the life I need to continue to live. Less IS more!

Hmm! When you are young the ambition to achieve in life is natural & good but not OCD. The older one gets the more we realize our goals change.
The Bible tells us not to put our hopes in things where rust and ……
    Matthew 6: 19-21
How true. One day we will leave it all behind.

It’s interesting to me that having spent 40 years here in South America, so many of these things are the norm here. Every time. Visit the USA I find myself very stressed and flustered. It’s all just too much. I see that consumerism/materialism has stolen our quality of life. I have a lot of work in these areas, thank you for sharing. The coffee thing made me laugh. My husband says he doesn’t like to “perfume” his coffee. Of course, we get great coffee down here.

Since retiring I'm now living in a very small space, so trying to fit things in, I'm now leaving items that I think I need in my amazon cart longer. Giving myself time to realize how much work is involved with the so called easier way to modernize my life. Sometimes new gadgets are just dust collectors.
Trying to be happy with what I have and even eliminate what I really don't use much anymore. When I let go of things, life becomes less stressful, more peaceful, simplified even. I'm learning, it's definitely a process, not a race. Thank you for your insight into these areas of life. And I enjoy the quiet. Sometimes with music or tv on, it's like shut it off, the quiet, peaceful feel of the room is so fantastic then.
    Have a great day peacefully.
