Though my husband passed away in 2022, I finally went through his desk this Memorial Day. The good Lord kept me at this task that I had evaded for all this time. It truly was a day of memories. My husband was a Vietnam Vet, a community college administrator, proud dad, and loving grandfather. He took ALL your points very seriously and worked very hard to secure a comfortable, enjoyable retirement. He even had a file on improving his golf strokes as well as the use of his cameras. I am so thankful he enjoyed his retirement even as his health was declining.
Your insights and reflections are right on. Thank you for sharing.

I'm so sorry for your loss- if it helps, it sounds like you did a better job than I did. My husband passed just prior to 2018 and I had to clean out his office within 2 weeks- which sounds longer than it seemed, given the circumstances. I did a terrible job, & when I went back into his office to 'congratulate' his replacement, there on the top shelf of the replacements bookcase was a small frame I immediately recognized & had missed. It's a very unusual frame- one my husband bought to put my photo in. I couldn't say a word about it- he had a photo of his daughter in it. I went into the walk-in closet where they had 'stored' all my husband's books (not something I wanted) and they were just thrown in, some torn. My friend was with me, which was fortunate because I burst into tears...all I could think of was the books were treated disrespectfully, as was my husband's ill body, as medical mistakes made was the reason he passed. He worked where he passed, in his hospital. I pray your heart is soothed more each month that goes by. ❤️💕

I started water colour painting when I retired. I also go to the gym group classes. I like meeting the other people and I’ve found my gang of people who look for me to show up. So I work out but I also have a social aspect of physical fitness.

Once I was in my 50s, I feared being layoff. That was the major reason I saved so much money. For me, it was never a career, it was a job. A job that served its purpose, financial security.
My father died at 60, I planned to retire asap.

Hi, Tim! I enjoy your videos very much. For every person who retires there are that number of ways to make it work. As my sister always says, "You, do you!" I'm thankful God will never let me go through anything in my life, alone. He was with me through severe injuries, cancer and more. I have no fear he is with me in retirement. Thanks for the words of encouragement and have a lovely day, Tim!

    Tim-
I have only posted two comments on CZcams and I need to get better at that because I have learned a lot from content creators. You have a phenomenal way on speaking to real life. I am 57 and looking to retire at 60 and your channels resonate with me. You hit a lot of real people points whether it is minimalism, retirement thoughts, living life through a lens of not make believe social media life is the real deal. I appreciate your content and what you do has an impact on people like myself. Real life is the way to being happy. I look forward to all of your videos on all of your channels. While I am not a photography enthusiast I enjoy your work and how you explain it. Just real stuff and I really enjoy your work.

I retired 11 years ago and have NEVER looked back or regretted doing it. My husband and I traveled internationally in the beginning but are unable to do so now due to his health issues. But, roadtrips within the US are still possible. I started a hobby crafting business with my bff. I dove into gardening, something I was not able to do while I was working. I stayed connected with work friends, reconnected with my middle school group by joining their breakfast club which meets once a month, and stayed active with my siblings (7) doing community volunteering. Since I am safekeeping my granddaughter's piano while she works on her 2nd masters degree at George Washington University, I decided to learn how to play it. Some people think I'm nuts for creating a cleaning schedule for my home which enables me to spend a few hours on it daily and then the rest of the day is mine to do as I please. By Thursday, my home is clean and I now have Friday, Saturday and Sunday to "play". However, I think I checked all the boxes except the Legacy question. I hadn't thought about that. Thanks for bringing it up! My oldest son will retire in a year and I will share your list with him. I'm sure it will be helpful. Thx Tim.

I retired from the school system 2 years ago at 62. That wasn't my original plan but the sudden onset of a health issue necessitated early retirement. I'd based who I was with my job - which I suddenly didn't have any more. These two years have been very eye-opening...and I'm still not sure who I am (lol) or what day it is. Baby steps.
Thank you for your words of wisdom. Have a wonderful Thursday, or Friday, or...whatever day it is 🤔 13:47

The first year of retirement sucked big time. I missed being the go to for fixing problems. I’m adjusting but slowly. Hobbies are I’m an artist and enjoy painting. I’m in an exercise class four days a week. Purpose is still a fleeting thing. I’m retired from Department of Transportation. I did love my job.

Before I retired, I had taken multiple training classes on preparing for retirement. Secretly I laughed at the idea that anyone would feel lost and unsettled as I have a number of hobbies and interests. But guess what? When I was retired, I felt depressed and adrift. Fortunately, after a couple of months, I got a part-time job that was fulfilling. I consider myself a retired person with a part-time job. If they still want me after my contracted term, I will ask for fewer hours though. - As far as routine, unless I'm ill or had a big event the previous day, I'm up by 7 AM. I love mornings, and they are the most productive for me. I downsized many years before retiring. I came to your channel for the decluttering videos, as I am currently re-decluttering. Maybe not quite "Swedish death" level, but if I have to leave upright or feet first, there will be little for anyone to have to bother with.

I re-sell on E-Bay. I did it the last 5 years of working mostly things around the house but a year before retirement I started going to thrift stores to find things to flip. Now I go to yard sales and estate sales too. This keeps my driving, computer, accounting skills active as well as my brain. I learn the streets around town and what is good to sell. I love retirement. I was so bored working for someone else. Now I work for myself.

I “retired” from being a stay-at-home mom 10 years ago and I still feel like I am somewhat wandering around aimlessly. I’m still doing a lot of the things I’ve always done but minus two kids and school stuff. I’ve done this and that throughout the years and I have my hobbies but I still feel like I’m wasting time. I need to get a wiggle on and focus on some of the things you talked about and, hopefully, feel a little less aimless. 👍🏼🙆🏻‍♀️

Thanks Tim! Nearly nine years in (unbelievably) and I can say it's been a journey, something of a roller coaster to be honest. Covid didn't help. I think the hardest of the 10 questions for me is purpose. [I don't really think about legacy figuring I'll be dead and won't care--ha ha.] But purpose is challenging because you can't really ignore it--you do need a reason to roll out of bed. Throughout my life, ego tended to drive my sense of purpose and yet in these years, I feel I should try to lessen the ego's influence and allow for a more well-rounded personality to emerge. It's not easy. Dealing with structure (or lack thereof) has also been an issue for me. I score a bit better on some of the others, but retirement can be a challenge, no doubt. I liked when you mentioned that you plan in order to increase your ease of mind. That's something I am striving for more and more. And finding balance as you also mentioned.

Appreciate your insights as we approach our retirement. All good suggestions to consider. I’m one of the women who worry that my husband is planning on no self-imposed structure and looking at his purposes beyond retirement. I don’t want to see him stop learning but not really sure he’s thinking of these types of things and I want for us to remain “young” in our mind/body as long as possible. Your video gave me conversation points! Thanks

My husband and I joke because we don’t know how we managed to work. Retirement is busy. We have a slew of grandkids and I have my sidekick school nurse job one day a week. But we do have times we get bored. We love to camp and hang out with my sisters and brother-in-laws. Our moms need us at this point so that gets thrown into the daily mix too. I work 3 days a week on average which seems perfect. I am a very routine person, i try to have one day a week where i have nowhere to be, no appointments, and do whatever i want on that day, even if that is yard work all day, it is what i feel like doing. I fo like my alone time and need that. Most people, family included think i am an extrovert, but I’m not. I like people and consider myself a people person and can pretty much talk to anyone. But i like more one on one, small groups of people i know. Your points in this video are spot on 😊
