  • A large, circular 4,000-year-old stone building has been discovered on a Cretan hilltop, an amazing and unexpected find that looks to disrupt a major airport project on the Greek island.
    It belongs to the powerful Minoan civilisation. From above the new discovery looks like a large wheel. It’s a labyrinthine building covering an area of 1,800-square-metres or 19,000-square-feet.

    The stock answer... A ritual site, structure, etc. I am amazed we got anything done, with all the rituals going on and of course building all the ritual sites and structures.

      I'm inclined to agree but then I think of where I've lived:
      4 different denominations of churches within walking distance. One Christian School, one Catholic after school program building, one sport stadium that for awhile had a giant cross in front of it, and one multi use park/field area with a nondenominational wedding use chapel on the property.
      Where I currently live, I have one grocery store I could feasibly walk to if I had to, one gas station...and 3 churches plus an abandoned one.
      There's no shortage of ritual sites in our modern world.

      True. It looks more like a fortress to me.
      But in mythology there was a labyrinth where the Minotaur lived (half men, half bull). Let's hope they don't wake him up.

      They are always going for the ritual, religious route because it’s the simplest, take the great pyramid of Giza, we have to swallow the completely illogical explanation that it’s a tomb when it is clear to everyone with the tiniest level of Intelligence that it’s a power plant for generating electricity .. there is incontrovertible evidence for this explanation yet we have to go for the simple tomb idea as it doesn’t require rewriting history !

    • @AveragePicker
      @AveragePicker Před 9 dny +3

      @andyjamesable A power plant? Oh for fvck sake I can't even tell if you are being sarcastic or not. That makes zero sense, has no evidence, is not possible, and isn't even logical. You might as well declare your shoes are rocket ships.

    It’s likely a very large and elaborate tholos style tomb. I just hope they find some Linear A with another language for a primer so it can be deciphered.

    • @terryhunt2659
      @terryhunt2659 Před 12 dny

      There's a promising recent interpretation of Linear A by Forensic Accountant Mark Cook [see his CZcams channel]. We already know that 9/10ths of the clay tablets are Accounting/Tax records, as are many of the Linear B tablets, and we can easily read all the numbers, so an accounting-based approach makes sense.
      Cook shows evidence that Linear A is not a Minoan language, but is an Ancient Egyptian shorthand, using only one hieroglyph from words usually 'spelled' with several, and adapting and simplifying them as convenient for taking clay-tablet notes. This (he suggests) was developed by Egyptian merchants in Crete (the two cultures traded and interacted significantly), and became more extensively used and developed in a period of several decades when the Minoans had been weakened by a fleet loss and effectively asked to come under Egyptian hegemony for protection.
      He has also identified two wall paintings, one in Egypt and one in a Minoan-ruled Agean island, the first showing an embassy from the Minoans to the Pharoah, and the second the Pharoah with his fleet sailing to Crete. In the latter the ports of embarcation and arrival are shown in detail, and identifiable.
      During the Bronze Age collapse, Egypt withdrew from Crete, and when the Mycenaeans took control they continued using the same notation system, which evolved into Linear B.
      I'm not saying I accept every single one of his suggestions (yet), but they seem mostly solid: I'm waiting for the forthcoming 2nd edition of his book.

      It's size, position, and time period (beginning of the palatial era) makes me believe it could be the tomb of the legendary founder of Minoan culture, Minos himself. Wether he existed as some legendary man, or he wasn't.

    My guess is that it isn't a religious site but fulfilled one of the functions the palaces took over. My guess is that it was used to store food.
    The Minoans seems to had a similar system to the Mycenae where food and resources were traded with the government who also handed out such things when needed. This was before currency was a thing.
    But that is of course just a guess, until it dig is finished it is a bit dangerous to draw any conclusions but it does seem like a coincidence that the building went out of use when the palaces was built, so even if it fulfilled another function, it is still likely one the places fulfilled too.
    The Minoans are certainly one of the most mysterious and fascinating early cultures of Europe. We seen some breakthroughs with Linear A recently so I hope they will decode it soon.

I read the articles about it and compared the photos released with google map straight away as I was curious where it is. Articles said the hill is north west from Kastelli near the airport. If you look at the photos, you can see the distant land of the future airport and the motorway snaking behind. The motorway heads north, kind of in the direction of the hill and then it turns away. The hill is north of the future airport. I understand, It's hard to show more with the little they provided.

    I suspect it was a celestial observatory. Establishing the path of the sun and stars through the year. It looks like there are six outer rooms in every quadrant, although they are not precisely laid out. Each room being equal to 15 standard degrees. The inner portion being made of four rooms, perhaps N, S, E, W.
    The rooms themselves and the walls between them may have helped them record the angle between north and things like the equinoxes and solstices. A basic necessity for agricultural civilizations to know when to plant which time of year, keeping calendars and such. I am curious if it is laid out according to true north. Wonder also if there is some kind of podium or post hole in the center to make sightings from also.
    Having celebrations there would also make sense as people could verify sightings, being on the top of a hill a clear view of the sky and such makes sense for such a building. Looking up at the sky on holidays or feast days for instance, watching the sun go down or the break of dawn and noting the sun's position by markers on the building.

    What is a Minoan? Go back in time to ask the inhabitants of the island four thousand years ago, they would not be able to explain what a Minoan is/was... 😐

    Ritual suggests religious to me but I suspect it was a ceremonial structure used to bestow authority and rank. Such a practice would involve much feasting in celebration wheras ritual would not (or as likely more restrained) in the Minoan culture ?

      "authority and rank", that sounds right.
      And I was thinking the collective started small, and over the years the parties grew bigger. With tithing to the house, everyone's bill get paid, and we all meet back here next year.
      Centered around the migration time of a favored prey animal, probably in the fall.
      With grapes, and olives, and figs? Fig go back that far?
      Anyway I like my image.
      It's not accurate.
      But every one involved is dead, so no Minoan is going to tell.

    Maybe it was the animal’s last stand against the humans. The animals retreated to their fortress behind ringed walls but were massacred … hence the bones. That also explains why the intelligent animals that built the fortress are now extinct.
