  • In the first of a projected two-volume biography, Leader, Roehampton professor of English and author of The Life of Kingsley Amis, traces Bellow’s life from his early years in Quebec through his coming-of-age in Chicago, his first three marriages, and the publications of Dangling Man, The Adventures of Augie March, and Herzog. Throughout, Leader draws on Bellow’s correspondence and on his own interviews with Bellow’s friends, relatives, and acquaintances for a fresh perspective on this great writer and his work.

Thank you for posting, much appreciated. A huge fan of Saul Bellow, great American writer, a difficult subject that Leader’s book vigorously brings to life, and lifts the veil of celebrity to reveal meanings in his quotidian existence. A book so engrossing, you’re sorry when you reach its end.

Prof. Leader's father had a famous career as a director, and it's wonderful seeing his brilliant, resourceful son abet understanding of this literary genius.

29:05 "I am fond of preposterous people." Yes, Bellow was. But in this postindustrial age, money is tighter, and preposterous people have been done away with in the name of efficiency. And the less preposterous raise a dull racket on social media, crowding out the originals.

Bellow was a conservative yet the two hosts try hard to subjectively paint him as dem left - hosts as cowards
