- Howdy fellow adventurers, it's time for the next installment of "The Beagle Barge Beagle Build." In this episode, we take off the ugly old vinyl siding (so not shanty boat) and put T&G cedar on. As always, we have a false start or two, but we finally figure it out enough to get 'er done.

I agree with felt/tar paper and verticle, water can drain down and over the side then. Ideally a flashing on the bottom will help that keeps water from settling toward the bottom. Also I would linseed oil the wood, especially the end grain before painting. Mix 50/50 oil and thinner. It soaks into the wood and will dry so paint will still stick but is keeps moisture from getting under the paint! It also helps limit splitting. Looks great! BestRoy
Hi Roy, I'm going to email you soon with questions. Thanks you!
@@backwatersandbackroads We will chat then Brenton. Looks great so far! BestRoy
She’s looking great. Thanks for sharing. 🇨🇦
A+ on siding.
Looks great again
Looks great
Looks nice.
Looks great to me
Looks great Brenton!
Hi Brent you can put a drip edge below the window and above the cedar to create a proper watershed. The shanty looks great! Can't wait to start my build. Rory up in Canada
Great Job! I would love to have an Water RV! Cheers
The boat looks great, I really love the wood. I can imagine it will be a little heavy? I am building my pontoon shanty boat out of freezer panel. On paper it looked the best for strength, longevity, weight and waterproofness. Your videos inspired me to make it. I'm not a builder either so I made and fixed a lot of mistakes. I just installed the fire yesterday and am about 2/3 finished now. I will email you some pics. Thanks for your videos and inspiration.
Ice and water shield...done my whole kitchen roof ..4,12 pitch .. needed it
Kool boat ....
Min Wax makes that they call a "Wood Hardener". It is used to stabilize partly decomposed wood. Like window sills and such. It also paints over well.
Thank you. That sounds handy.
Yeah seriously, you are doing awesome with that project. most of the time I don't know what Im doing. Just trying stuff makes for a lot of break-throughs!
Brent it looks good…. Remember it’s a Shanty boat not a yacht. The rustic look gives it character. I’m glad you went with the vertical boards, kind of reminds me of the Lisa B. Good Shanty boat. Thanks again for your videos and good work. Stain it Wavy Gravy brown!
Love the new look, you should consider some type of sealer to protect that beautiful wood from the weather.
you have several laps that will start to leak over time. A thought would be to give a slight V on the gap and use a black roofing tar in the crack. Go to "Ringworm " to see how he did his cabin. I thought it would look like crap, but it actually looks good.
like I said only a thought.
Been thinking about my build and have decided to make the entire frame from thin Aluminum Tubing and Cover the outside with Thin Alum sheeting with Large Lexan Windows and from what i have seen on most Shanty boat bilds are they all seem to be way to Heavy i will have some type foam insulation and a inner skin of very thin Plywood. Lite is the Key.
Totalboat makes a penetrating epoxy that works good on rotten lumber that will soak in deeply to the rotten fibers and solidifies the wood keeping from it continually rotting and returns the structurally Integrity . Thought For next time maybe. Looks much better with the cedar siding for sure
Kilz wood treatment?
Cedar is the way to go
👍
Hello from the stormy Ozarks Brenton! I agree with the tar paper and vertical boards. i would put mineral oil on your cedar and add flashing on the bottom. It looks like a awesome shanty boat! best of all, i like your cost!!! thats the way to do it! makes it easier to change or replace! are yoyos legal in your area? tight lines!!!
Hey Brenton I just got home from the golf course got on CZcams first video I seen was yours what you doing it looks great best of luck to you and wavy
I want to build shanty with scrap pallets and foam create. Would be super cheap and very light
You should set the bottom of your siding on a 1/2" piece of plywood strip so that the bottoms are the same all the way down. Also, buy yourself a chalkbox for marking out long cuts
i had to replace the outside 1/4 inch ply on my boat went with smart siding 4x8 sheets like Martins boat.
Man, that is an absolutely AWESOME Beagle Shanty!!!!
I remember seeing the beagle barge on marketplace where I live right outside of New Orleans
one thing you may wanna consider is the weight The siding will be much liter than the Cedar not to mention the durability is much better , I used the cedar on a project and it didn't last very long...
You'll need flashing around the bottom!!!
Lake trout = like salmon, but milder in flavor...I think.
Looks way better brother... Siding is great for somethings, but i agree the ceder looks more Shanty Boat 😊. Love the electric start on the genie. Keep the vids coming😉. Hi Wavey 😄 🐶
Use builders plastic under tung n groove
Thanks for telling me when visiting before I started. And help on the doors.
Need trim board on bottom
Just saying I'd probably try using roof shingles with one inch foam insulation.
Just something to think about 🤔😳😳
On the sides?
Next time you cross Mobile Bay make sure you put your moped in the back to keep the bow out the water when it's rough... 😊. Yeah I've been watching your videos since before you made the loop the first time, good stuff,,,, God bless you and your free-spirited adventures 👍
If starting from scratch I wonder if, instead of particle board, marine plywood would be best.
That definitely would have been better
J channel .. done my house w siding
I'll assume you'll be burdening me if you have questions about Wavey 😂😂 my building experience stops at building little humans. Which I'm completely incompatible with at this stage in life. 😅😅😂 good morning..good video
Doing better than I...
The issue with black paper is that it only traps moisture with the house wrap it wicks water out but will not let it in so if you do get rot it will only be the siding not yor osb and framing .
Sorry dude were it i and i wanted to keep my barge I'd pull it back off and start again
You can add 1"x2'"s to cover all the seams. Put calk on the back side and that will keep the water out completely !
Is there a video that talks about the barge hull and how you came about buying it? Thanks.
Yes I think I talk about it some on ep 1 of the beagle barge beagle build. Nutshell: found it in lousiana, 30x8 welded aluminum work barge that never worked a day in its life. 10k. Deal!
@@backwatersandbackroads What a find, will go back and watch the video, thanks.
Why did you have to swap the Honda 50 out? I missed that somewhere along the way. 🤔 Lol
I didn't have to, the Yamaha is a high thrust and much better suited for the heavy barge
@@backwatersandbackroads I figured something like that or you had some problems with it. Love your channel!
@@msrockyblue thank you for finding us.
It's leaking around the windows because the siding was improperly installed.
Just saw this video, and I know I'm telling you this too late now because you're already done. But what you should have done when you took off the siding, you should have also taken off all the Corner trim boards and all the window trim and got rid of all the J moldings those because you don't need those at all since you're not using the vinyl siding anymore . The windows have a built-in J mold in it, so you should have nailed your cedar siding to slide into the window J mold, and then nail all the cedar siding all the way all the way to the end of the corners of The Shanty. And then take the corner trim that you took off earlier and nail those on top of the cedar siding. And then all the trim boards that went around the window that you took off, nail those back on going OVER on top of your cedar siding. So you would see no gaps and eliminated all the tricky cuts. But of course after everything was stripped off, wrap and staple all the tar paper before nailing any siding down .
In case you're wondering, I was a licensed contractor and owned a home improvement and electrical contracting business for many years.
But like I said, it's too late now cuz you're already done but at least now you know for next time when you want to do it the professional way.🍸😎
Howdy. Welcome! Thanks for finding our little channel. Thay definitely sounds like the right way to do it. It's funny, when o was building the boat, I couldn't find any help (in real life) even a local builder who built his own boat from scratch (we did an interview with him) couldn't be bothered. So I just did it the best I could with good advice from folks here on YT. I'm sure I'll end up doing a lot of this again (if we survive the loop) ig what I have lasts a few years, I'll be happy. Thank you for taking the time to explain some details of doing it right.
@@backwatersandbackroadsyeah, I always try to help people when I see they need help and save the money along the way,, but unfortunately when it comes to CZcams, they have already started the project or already done, so it's too late for me to give them the proper advice as far as planning it out, buying the proper materials and then actually doing the work. It would have been a pleasure to show you, because I can see you learn fast
Sorry i wish i could say you've solved your siding issues however black paper is not the answer you need housewrap and tape fir the seams always caulk the vitical edges before attaching the tounge and grove and above and below you need aluminum z flashing to wick the water away i don't know what your planning for the butt ends top and bottom but if nothing else just caulk the poo out of both when moisture collects on the ends ot will always wick and cause premature rot
Scow is too heavy that’s why certain choices were made.
Whatchu mean?
My rule of thumb is if it aint broke don't fix it.
How long is the barge?
Approx 30x8
