I hate endings. That was actually the original title of this video! Anyway, this is a problem that games like Elden Ring, Tears of the Kingdom, Xenoblade, and plenty of other games face. But the catch is that the better they are, the worse it is!

Actually, that post game "depression" is one of my favorite parts of the experience; finishing the game always makes me feel a bit wistful, and reflective, but it also feels final and satisfying. It's emotional, and figuring out what I can take from the experience is one of the best parts of it for me. It's almost meditative.

...I love that feeling. It means I've experienced something meaningful. Only a percentage of games I play manage to do this. I cherish it.
The idea of attempting to dodge this feeling seems surreal. A little pain for an experience that you will remember the rest of your life. Seems fair to me.

Journey absolutely destroyed me. I no-lifed League of Legends for 6 years. To have a game that didn't have communication, no contest. It was refreshing. I choked back sobs thou seeing it wasn't just one person with me along the way, but upwards of 10. I couldn't tell the entire time, and to come from such a toxic game to where everyone was helpful to the end goal was unique. I'll never be able to play that game the same again because of it.

Journey was magical. I remember buying it and playing through it in one sitting once it first came out, it was such a different and unique experience compared to anything else I had ever played at that point. The only thing I think is important though for games like these to work, is to experience at least some of the trash that makes most of the games out there. They are what truly makes actually good games shine so much more and become what they are. If we only had good games around, most of them would in reality be considered mediocre, because we don't have anything to compare them to other than high quality games. You need to have bad times to fully enjoy the good times.

I recently played through Final Fantasy X, and the feelings you talk about in this video are exactly what I experienced. I loved the world, the combat was so refined, the aesthetic and vibe are immaculate, I adored the story and characters and connected with them in a way I haven't experienced in a game in probably at least three years. And I binged it in a way I haven't done in ages. After it ended, I felt a big sense of loss. It just so happens that the ending *FFX SPOILERS* matches those sorts of feelings perfectly. Of losing something. Of having to go on without it. Of "waking up" so to speak. It was an extremely poignant sort of immersion, and reminder that some things just don't last forever. But the chance to experience them and carry them with you is more than worth the pain of having to give them up.

me too man i had previously gone and binged every single final fantasy game up until 10 and i knew from that point onward that the gameplay was going to go though major changes for example turn based combat was going to cease to exist from 11 and onward. the way the games are now are still good but just not for the same reasons that every game that came out before 11 were. this makes 10's ending even more poetic if you look at it the way you had described, where some things just don't last forever in this case the classic turn based combat was lost but a new way for final fantasy as a series to express itself was gained because of this loss.

I don't get this feeling very often from games, I think the last one that gave me post-game depression might've been Nier Automata. But I can very quickly bounce back form that by distracting myself with another game, or watching some anime or whatever. Much like what your friend said, I see that feeling as it being very clear how much I treasured that game. Though this doesn't mean when I say I hardly feel the depression it's cause most games these days suck (they don't, and anyone who says that doesn't play many games), it only happens with the most amazing of games, particularly story games.
But I am also someone who doesn't get very emotionally attached to things, so that certainly may be why I have an easy time getting over it. I think it's a perfectly good feeling to hold and shouldn't be something you're afraid of experiencing.

But, man, when I got to the end both games left me in tears.
It helped a lot that the ending point was obvious and I could delay it for as long as I wanted to. It also helps that there's so much extra content besides the main game.

Oddly, what you're describing is tantamount to overcoming an addiction, albeit in a micro bite-sized way. What people who have never come into direct contact with an addiction don't realize is that stopping the behavior of addiction, stopping the specific action, isn't really the problem with solving/overcoming an addiction, it's overcoming the hole that's left behind the change in behavior.
To be clear, I'm not suggesting that becoming immersed in a game is _the same_ as a harmful addiction, only that dealing with the aftermath of that immersion runs surprisingly parallel to addiction, and as such, your suggested remedies don't stray a great distance from conventional wisdom in addiction recovery programs. Other achievable tips might include focusing on eating healthy, finding positive social interactions where possible, and spending time outdoors and in nature.

Having something lined up is great but there is a lot I believe in leaving some space between the next thing, both to be present in the real world and appreciate the art. They say we retain art in our memories better the longer we interface with it. I see that post game meditation as part of that expereince, running through my thoughts and piecing together my opinion is all part of it for me. Otherwise we just end up in the constant cycle of distraction and desperate to fill the "what next" hole.

BUT, then it made me happy AF and made me cry when the "chpater 2" popped on the screen, I was like: "thank god its not over." And then i discovered it is right here where kojima couldnt finish the game , and it was actually a final mission. I was coping that there is more so much, LOL. Bindged more of thos cut content vids etc.

Yknow, while making a list of different things to varying results, I feel all of that is unnecessary when you take a few things to mind.
Set realistic boundaries and expectations. Don't let one piece of media consume you; its imperative to allow yourself to have a wide berth of hobbies and interests because once one ends, you have other things to do. As long as you have a good in-between for your personal level of suspension of disbelief, it shouldn't be an issue. The "what now" never happens because you've turned yourself into a one trick pony. That's what happens with fans/stans; once that media they revolved around ends, they take to the fandom to continue it in a reluctance to let go.
I've noticed you talked about just playing multiple games, but I never really found that to work. The more varying the activity, like reading, learning a trade, exercising, etc paired with videogames it removes a lot of the sting of letting go of something good.
Tl;dr if you frequently struggle with post game depression, unironically consider therapy. Develop yourself and your personality. It's pretty helpful!

But to me there are several reasons why someone plays video games which @mhswoocer omitted.
    1. Escaping reality (as said in the video) : There a line in the Netflix show "sense 8" that hit home
-To what do we recognize a drug addit
-To the desire to escape reality
    2. Killing time : Here not getting bored is the main goal but since we talk about "good games". (i will give my definition of "good games" once i listed the reasons)
    3. Feel/think something : Getting the chance to be able to live a experience you cannot in reality, and learning from it.
    4. Stress relief : I stressed while playing "Stardew valley" because real time gameplay... So i think this category depends highly of the player
Good game : A game that has every mechanics revolving around a theme, and manage to convey this theme without directly telling you ,while keeping you immersed.
Of course I rate any fictional work through this order : Story/Consistency/Character building/Pace. For a video game i am on the look out for those first. "immersion" is quite bound to the "consistency" of the world you evolve in and your emotional involvement on what you are doing.
"The Problem That Only Affects Good Games" for me is quite off. "The Problem I face only while i play affects good games". I think the "problem" is more about mhswoocer than "good games".
The feeling of lost is called mourning ^^' and it is not only about death. You said one of the solution : If there is a hole, file it with something similar of what was there in the first place.
Also the sadness phase of mourning is usually when someone focus on the lost. But the acceptance phase is about realizing what you gain from it.
I always finish my games. The main reason to why i am doing so Is because, I do not if the last second of the game will be the one that i will grow from.

Not everybody will understand the way we feel about it.
So just as a sidenote: Consider this to be fairly extreme to other people. Like the person setting next to you in the cinema not caring about the protagonist's death in the final act.
Saying "oh, it's over", skipping the credits. While we still sit there.

I personally never feel like I run into this problem that much because my favorite games tend to be highly replayable. Perhaps one of my biggest motivations while playing is gaining mastery over the game's mechanics (which is something I never can truly do on a first playthrough)

The secret is to get married and/or run your own business. You'll be angry the game wont just end already.
I'm sure it would also help to just see games as a target of conquest, that will both encourage a sense of accomplishment upon completion and also encourage you to compete more of the game.
I'm still not done with totk because despite being at the end, I need - in order for my victory to be complete - to finish the side stories with the Gazette, the yiga, the monuments, the pirates, etc.
Ultimately I think the "post game depression" is a hedonistic problem, and building your life outside games will help.
Then again part of my job is literally making friends with people I will never talk to again so maybe I just don't get it.

This is something that's totally out of the control of the consumer, but I've found that the games that ask you to carry something of it to the real world don't really hurt me that much when I finish them, also feeling fulfilled is good, if you love a game but once it's over you can't help but think about all the questions left unsolved(xenoblade 3 and Kingdom Hearts 3 I'm looking at you) it's really hard to feel like you're done with the game, because it feels like the game is not done with you, even if you've already poured almost 200 hours and done every side quest.

I tend to obsess about these games on the internet until I get bored of them. I get into theories, watch content creators playing it, maybe get some merch, sometimes I even start NG+ though I never managed to finish it, except once when I didn't get the Royal Ending for Persona 5 Royal. Most of the time I'm over it within 1-2 weeks, it worked for Xenoblade 3 and Persona 5. In Zelda I'm still occupied finishing some sidequests and experiment with crazy Zonai builds. Since I can't be spoiled anymore I'm already almost done obsessing and I'll probably end it by watching all cutscenes and beating Ganondorf again.
Though having another game on the list also is a great thing to look forward to. I definitly want to play Elden Ring soon, since my Link was so overpowered and looked like an Elden Ring boss himself I really want to get my hands on something more challenging.

    • @whirlwind872
      @whirlwind872 Před rokem +1

Pro tips for Elden Ring, as someone obsessed for the past year myself:
      1. Don't ignore stagger. Jumping attacks and charged heavy attacks to a boss's back can do devastating stagger damage, but the game doesn't have a stagger bar or any way of showing it to you. So its poorly communicated but an important mechanic.
      2. If you explore and find a seemingly useless item, there's a good chance the item wasn't the point. The devs put the item there because they wanted you to find something else. Either its a good vantage point where you can see the beginning of the level and contextualize the map in your head, or it leads to a hidden area, etc. The items in elden ring are ALWAYS!! placed with purpose. Additionally, there is a lore implication for the location of every item. Things aren't just randomly dispersed through the map - if you find a particular item somewhere, there's a lore reason it's there.
      3. Faith is absolutely overpowered. No other stat comes close. The sheer versatility and power of incantations can obliterate most enemies and a lot of bosses. Strength is the 2nd best stat. I don't really recommend Arcane or Dex as they have some weird properties and scaling.
      4. Tarnished Archaeologist is the best elden ring lore channel on CZcams. He's so far ahead of almost every other channel its crazy. Other creators are great but they don't have the historical/archaeological knowledge that TA does, so they can't use the environmental clues to their fullest. I highly recommend tarnished archaeologist, particularly if you have an interest in real-life history and archaeology.
      5. Similar to Zelda TOTK, elemental damage makes a big difference in elden ring. Using lightning in water/rain does way more damage, and using fire in rain reduces its damage. This is part of why Faith is so powerful, it gives you access to all forms of elemental damage which can directly counter some enemies.

I don't suppose you have any solutions from the game dev perspective, do you? (Not being snarky, I really want to know). I want to make a game as a passion project (lol, like we haven't heard that a million times before), so obviously the GOAL is to have a good game (I'll start small and get practice before the "main attempt"), although I realize that is a VERY big if. But, assuming that amazingly I make a great game, how can the developer minimize this problem? You can just add in content patches or DLC after the fact, but that takes more time and effort that you don't get paid for (unless you sell them, but most gamers don't like that, and not without good reason imho). I have a few ideas, but I'm looking for more as mine are all pretty resource-intensive.
The best solutions I can think of are 1) have some sort of sandbox system that encourages players to make their own content in-game, expand the "world" a bit. I don't like this solution as that content generally isn't story-rich, which is generally what allot of immersion relies on. Encouraging and enabling mod support could help too, but same problem. The ULTIMATE answer (that I could think of) would somehow to make a custom procedural/AI system for each game that generates new side content in addition to the main quest. There is another idea that I have, but I have no idea whether it's good: trying to bake the immersion into the mechanics themselves, somehow. I have no idea of an example, but if you could theoretically make the immersion of simply running or moving (without getting tired IRL or swinging into a nightstand due to VR's limitations), maybe, just MAYBE this would be better. Idk though.

This is long so here's the TLDR: Don't create a hard stop by resetting the world when the player beats the game. Instead, have the world change to a postgame state with new effectively endless content that allows the player to stop playing when they feel ready.
I think the solution is to give the player a choice to stop by adding in post game content. Lemme explain: Monster Hunter and Pokemon are both great at this. The game ends and everyone in the world acknowledges the fact that the big bad has been defeated and the world is saved etc, but just like the real world, there are still problems to solve. In Monster Hunter World for example, the acknowledge that the last boss is dead and the new world is saved, but then they present you with special variations of older monsters (along with a few new ones) that you can fight as much as you want. It's in this way that the game only ends when the player gets bored of it and wants to put it down, but it prevents that hard stop that more traditional endings like Persona, Zelda, or Dragon Quest have. The solution of procedural generation is a great idea too! Plenty of games have post game areas that are procedurally generated for effectively infinite content.
