    Gotta respect William Duvall. Layne had some very big shoes to fill and this guy didn't come in to try to fill them. He just brought himself and added to an already amazing band and just gave it something different and help push it forward and make it what it is today. Which is still Chains. What was lost can never be replaced, they know that, he knows it, and when you hear their new stuff you don't hear Layne or a Layne impersonator, you hear William and what he adds to the band. I'm glad Jerry, Mike, and Sean didn't just disappear into the nothing. They stayed together, despite an enormous loss, and still made their music and kept the remaining members together and on stage. You can't really ask for more from one of your favorite bands.

And they’re not an annoying like normal average joe interviewers ! They shit me. Be great if all interviews were like this. Band interviewing other bands.

    Oh how I wish they could have all kept talking for at least another hour! ❤ Good to hear them actually talking about Layne, and about the lyrics _about_ Layne. Healthy. Layne was an amazingly talented person, but he left a trail of blood and broken hearts behind him, after years of self-inflicted debauchery. Jerry's no dummy: his lyrics burn with anger and pathos over Layne's wasted life & how he affected those closest to him. Many of his lyrics have a lot of hope, too. If anyone needs hope & brighter days ahead it's AIC. 👍🎸

      It’s definitely not one of James’ better moments, and I’m sure Papa Het himself would agree. I’d argue that it needs to be viewed in the context of Metallica having their own substance abuse issues at the time and still functioning at a high level (until they didn’t… see “Some Kind of Monster”). After AiC backed out of opening for Metallica, I imagine Hetfield’s mindset was somewhere along the lines of “we’re drinking and partying all night and still show up on time every day to do our jobs. These guys are breaking tour commitments because they can’t handle their shit.” As a higher functioning addict, looking down on lower functioning addicts helps justify your own sickness. (“My problem can’t be that bad because I’m doing better than those guys.”)
      When I watch those clips, I see one struggling addict trying to cover up his own insecurities by punching down on someone else. It makes me more sad than angry.
      It’s on you whether or not you want to personally forgive Hetfield, but this was almost 30 years ago, and the relationship that the Alice In Chains and Metallica guys have now certainly seems to point to the guys themselves having left that in the past.

    • @aaronbickford8725
      @aaronbickford8725 Před rokem +6

      @@Kjacket0 You hit the nail on the head 100% I’m in recovery myself, and I can tell you I said stuff practically every day in my active addiction that absolutely just was not who I am. Alcoholism and addiction turns folks into people they aren’t. It’s not an excuse, it’s just a fact. Once you cross a certain line with alcohol and/or drugs, it starts impacting your brain chemistry to the point where you become selfish, childish, and unable to empathize with anyone else’s issues except your own. That’s a big part of why drug addicts get such a bad name with medical professionals and it doesn’t take long for people in their lives to not want to deal with them. You basically stop maturing and become an overgrown selfish child. Now, if one has money and/or status, that tends to further complicate the situation and even make it worse when one has an addiction. It tends to get used as a justification. Addiction was declared a brain disease by the AMA back in the 1950s for a reason.

    • @lanne71
      @lanne71 Před 6 lety +5

      I agree, James was relaying the frustration of the guys in AIC at that time because Layne was F'd up a lot at that time and they couldn't play shows or he was not taking it as seriously, is how they may have felt.. It was not a disrespect to the band or Layne, but James was also an addict as were the other members of Metallica, so really, he was being a hypocrite. That is why fans are like F you. James still pulled off his shit though, is probably why he was like get through your show's man. James didn't let his addiction issues get in the way of pulling off his shows or work. Very different addiction issues, though. I am sure Layne had he had sobriety after the fact and still been around, would have gotten it and owned it.

    Man , first the lame Nickelback buddy buddy show and now friends with the biggest douchebag of all Lars Ulrich. Alice in Chains doesn't exist without Layne Staley, folks, it's just Jerry Cantrell and friends.

      Given that Jerry wrote 80% with Layne around, I would wager that it's always been Jerry Cantrell and friends. So get over it.

      True, plus Layne wrote almost all the lyrics from the tripod dog album. And to make it clear, I don't hate this band post-Layne, they can still make some decent songs (the Dinosaurs album although a bit flawed had a certain vibe to it). But the real Alice in Chains died in 1998 with the song "Died" in my opinion.
