11x 50mm lens comparison review: Leica Summilux 50 1.4 ASPH, Leica Summarit 50mm f1.5, Leica Noctilux 50mm f1.0, Canon 50mm 1.4 LTM, Voigtlander Nokton 58mm 1.4 (Nikon F), Voigtlander Nokton 50mm 1.5 LTM (ASPH), Jupiter-3 50mm 1.5 LTM (Leica Screw Mount or Leica Thread Mount), Nikkor SC 50mm 1.4, Carl Zeiss Sonnar 50mm 1.5 CRF (Contax Rangefinder Mount), Jupiter-8 50mm f2 CRF, Helios-103 53mm f1.8 CRF (Nikkor 50mm 1.2 would not fit my adapter sadly). 10 of the 11 lenses are 50mm rangefinder camera lenses + 1 SLR lens. All lenses tested on Leica SL digital camera and photos compared in Adobe Lightroom. Lens test compares centre sharpness, bokeh, vignetting, colour saturation, contrast and the general look of each lens. I use these lenses for portrait photography so I don't consider corner sharpness. (I'd always wondered about the Leica 50mm Summilux 1.4 vs 58mm Nokton 1.4 Voigtlander!)

Matt, this is another wonderful job comparing so many lenses so quickly. You just have to be wide awake and pay close attention because you go so fast among them. That is *not* a criticism; if you didn't go that fast the video would be much longer, so we *thank you* for going so fast. I now find myself jumping immediately to your video each time I see that you've posted a new one. Thank you once again and keep up the great work.

  • @kalenderquantentunnel9411

To me it's great how much work you put into comparing vintage lenses for rangefinders. And you know you are responsible that I bought a Leica IIIf and a handfull of lenses? Anyway, when you are judging lenses you are clearly concentrating on your own application: portraiture. Which is a good thing as otherwise the work needed would become overwhelming. For a generalized assessment you would need to check the lenses at about infinity (distance at least 100 times the lenses focal length) and jugdge their sharpness outside the center as well. But for general photography who really cares? For landscapes stop them down far enough and any lens will be just fine (except some modern asphericals like the voigtländer 1,5/35mm) and for general photography you are testing exactly what matters most. Keep up the good work!, It helped me a lot already and I can't enough! If I could ask for something, add the Canon 1.5/50mm to the list. This one currently grows on me.

Matt, thank you for sharing info about these lenses, each having a different characteristic. I can not afford to buy and experiment w all the M mount lenses that could work for my Leica M3, so I try to be very careful to shop for glass in the best condition, often telling myself that previous owners were not always careful. When choosing the best glass that you can afford (or offered at the moment) we should take the time to practice w that lens under different lighting conditions. Each lens likely different. Then work on Subject matter, composition and mood you want to create. Practice and experience may sometimes do more for a film shooter than fussing too much about getting the most famous model or brand. On a side note, hope film keeps attracting younger shooters and motivate people to open labs & clubs ❤❤😊😊

Thank you Matt for another great video. I happen to own the voight 58 and usually don't shoot it at anything bigger than f2.8 for sharpness and overall image fidelity. I also have the voigt 35/1.4 Nokton, which isn't part of your video and similar story with it as well, closing down to f4 makes the images become brilliant. Your video made me aware that rangefinder camera lenses are also potentially adaptable, which I didn't know that their lenses could even be removed. Perhaps you could do a short video about that.

I have no Leica lenses and am fond of the Sonnars, CZJ and Jupiter. I have a '57 KMZ Jupiter that is marvelous in modeling and color. It is as good or better than the others including the Skyllaney Bertele and the '43 CZJ f/1.5 and the Amotal.. I like the Sonar clan, and I believe the Amotal is a Planar. Thanks, Matt, for your quick summation. You have given me new incentive to do a comparison test on some FSU lenses which have been languishing in the back of my lens cupboard for some years. Three in Contax/Kiev mount - a Jupiter-8 (1950) which cost me USD22.00 in 2007, a Helios-103 (1983) which cost me USD5.00 in 2006, and a Menopta (1994) which cost me GBP8.00 in 2006. The Menopta is a "badge-engineered" version of the Helios-103. I also have a Jupiter-3 (1955) which cost me the princely sum of USD49.99 in 2006, and LTM versions of the Jupiters and some Industars. I have read that, whereas the Jupiters were modelled on Sonnar formula, the Helios-103 was modelled on Planar formula (double-Gauss) but it's pretty hard to get credible verification on that.

    Hi Matt,
Excellent comparison... and interesting results. It's been said that there is a lot of similarity between Leica M and R lenses, with some differences attributable to the looser design constraints in the R system (lenses bigger, can focus closer etc). How would you compare the Summilux-M to Summilux-R 50mm of the same vintage (i.e. not the newest R 50mm). That would be a hell of a comparison, an exclusively Leica 50mm shootout! :-) anyways, keep the videos coming along, they're all really good. Cheers

In addition, I do have a collection of vintage lenses and would love to try adapting some of them to the Leica. I am not clear on how the rangefinder features would work with an adapted lens. This is my first rangefinder so I’m still wrapping my head around the features. (I don’t have the camera yet!). Will the rangefinder focusing actually work with these lenses? How do I know the framing? Also, are there any specific mounts that adapt better to the M mount, and where the adapter wouldn't add too much to the size? Thanks for any input.

The kind of videos i like to watch.. too lazy to do the comparison myself ;) It looks like the 50mm Summilux F1.4and F2 images are the wrong way round, the bokeh circles look larger on the F2 image hmm but not sure as the video is still 480p.

    • @AR-vf7vg

Yes the 40 is also unique because of its size. Gives me a "Leica feel", like with the Samsung fullframe fisheye 12mm f2.8 (not f2).
But the huge Sigma 35mm f1.2, with the 50 f1.2 (very confortable) not only give superlative results, they offer more keeper opportunities regarding Eyes in focus so I hardly use the 40 anymore.
But someone who wants to compose in MF with no hurry, perhaps AF glas should not be forgotten to be envisaged (if adapters exist and permit focus by wire MF. But indeed encumbrance can be discouraging.
