- The final feasts of death row inmates serve as the entrée to a salivating investigation of capital punishment.
'The Short List' is a collection of some of the world’s best documentaries, curated by VICE founder Suroosh Alvi. On the first Thursday of every month, we’re airing a brand new documentary on our CZcams.
Each episode features a full documentary accompanied by Alvi in conversation with the filmmakers and the films’ subjects. In his conversations with the filmmakers Suroosh explores the themes of the films, unpacks the journey the filmmakers embarked on when creating their projects, and delves into the documentaries’ impact on audiences.
This series aims to take conversations usually only privy to the film festival crowd and go deeper, sharing them with millions of VICE viewers around the world. These documentaries go beyond parachute journalism - they are immersive insights into global issues and subcultures.

"I did not get my Spaghetti-O's. They gave me spaghetti. I want the press to know this." I feel awful for laughing but omggggg
Lol I died laughing at this quote too 😂
I was actually very sad about this , although he must’ve done something terrible , I couldn’t help but feel angry and sad for him because food means everything in prison and especially knowing it’s your last meal and only wanting and requesting one specific thing , I would be heartbroken to the point of tears and angry to the point of confusion as to why , why couldn’t I just get my fucking spaghetti-os 😢
@@alexgonzalez556 who cares, evil people shouldn't be given anything.
@@nathanbird6484 don’t make people feel bad for being empathetic.
@@nathanbird6484 by your logic you shouldn't be given anything? I define you as evil because you want to dehumanize humans.
Crazy to think one inmate ruined it for everyone after him by ordering a huge amount of food and eating none of it😂
I've always hated that excuse. The people in charge make their own decisions and therefore are the ones "ruining" it
@@ehrenloudermilk1053 thanks you beat me to it
I actually live in the small Texas town. Here in Jasper TX they have named a park and a street after the victim that was dragged by the 3 men.
Heydon: Yes. He asked for a huge quantity of food that nobody could eat in one meal. Then he said that he had lost his apetite and ate none of it.
He was certainly doing it as a last F U to the prison and the government. But the people who really got F ed were all other executed prisoner in Texas since then. They were told that they could have a last meal, but it would be an ordinary prison meal.
But yea. they did not have to do it. They could have limited the last meal to a resonal amount, like they did with the guy who ordered all those tacos. And if the meal did go uneaten, they could certainly have given it to somebody else. I'm sure that other prisoners would have loved it.
@@Hyoscyamus369 not really it's just we do have some small cities and or towns that are a bit racist. Like they only like the people with same skin tone as them 🤦🤷
This is brilliant, the directing is stunning. The food shots are stunning, the voice-over is magnetic, and the light hearted insert of personal opinion was easily perceived without feeling pushy. Overall it was fantastic 👏
The voiceover is the same guy who narrated that Brad Pitt movie about Jesse James a few years back.
Kelly, what a critic! Fantastic !
i liked it as well, though it was odd to like the video due to the context of it but it was really well made

This is one of the best short films I have watched, the visuals, the narrative, everything about it is 10/10
Not gonna lie I was hoping the movie would take up the entire 50 minutes.
The Nike quote hit me hard. That blew my mind like who would even think this was the story behind.
i’ve never heard that once in my life just like anyone, because it’s not true
As someone who rides the fence on this issue, I’d say this was quite thought provoking.
Did it help you make a conclusion on your stance? Purely curious.
@@jondiazzz I think so. There is a really strong moral argument here. It also highlights the sheer injustices of a minority but still a fairly sizeable number of executions. I have also heard the financial argument about the death penalty in that, in most cases, the death penalty is actually more of a burden on tax payers than life in prison; when you take in to account the extra time the justice system takes to bring a death sentence to its final conclusion.
@@jinglekeys43 I think it says a lot about you that you took the time to watch and think things through, no matter the conclusion you come to. It's one of the kindest things you can do for yourself and others.
The directing and cinematography are fantastic in this. Enjoyable style to do a documentary.

Ik! The quality is amazing. Feels like a million dollar production.
this editing is PHENOMENAL. Wanting to see more from this producer and editing team.
This hit me way harder than I expected.
Fantastic work.
I actually really appreciate that after watching the short film, you get to hear the insights of the film from the creators themselves. Saves me from searching them up and reading articles about the short film. Thanks Vice!
I love the cinematography of this video. This is the type of visuals that deserve an Oscar
Love the sound effects. Well done work to give an even more immersive experience to the already hard to grasp topic
Loved this from beginning to end. I'd love to see the storyboards. The part about the prep of the songbird was interesting. Would love for you could do a movie on morbid recipes or which prisons in America have the best food.
Same I would love to see this storyboards !
Camp cassidy lake boot camp at one point was known as a good spot to be as far as food goes... not that the quality was any better but because it was a boot camp program yhey had to feed you enough calories to get through the 18hr days of running, splitting logs and physical training.
Great cinematography, very appealing food content while discussing death penalty. Very nice contrast between both worlds (food and death) with that fun touch. Genius directing.
This film was amazing to watch thank you all for taking the time to make it.
The only thing this documentary made me want was TO EAT 😂😂
Make sense sweetie
The fact that we get free documentaries on CZcams by VICE is truly a gift 👍👍👍

How these people can eat anything before their execution is beyond me!!
Same! I think I’d be too busy having a panic attack 😭
I think the only people that ate were intellectually disablled thus didnt understand what was going on...
If you watched the video it actually says how most people don’t eat their final meals because they’re about to he executed
It’s scheduled so many have accepted their fate. What’s crazy is in Japan if you are sentenced to death they don’t give you or your family a date, one day they just come and do it with little notice. Way worse imo
Did you even watch the video before commenting?
I appreciate these guys to make this type of content and VICE is always my favorite in CZcams
The cinematogrpgy man... that's like a new another level for documentaries
Theyre using advertising cinematography exclusively, the kind u see for a few seconds on an ad on TV. No wonder it’s interesting and attention grabbing, you’re watching ads for foods!!!
It's literally just stock footage clipped together lmao.

2 in n out double double cheeseburgers with the yellow peppers on the side, burrito bowl from chipotle, small pepperoni cheese pizza, spicy tuna roll, and tall glass of Coca Cola with ice and a slice of lemon.
Well hello there, fellow Californian.
They typically only allowed food that could be made in the kitchen with the prison's food supplies or commissary. As delicious as these food requests sound, all they actually received is rearranged prison food with a bigger portion than normal.
The TV on the couch worked INCREDIBLY well! I completely forgot, multiple times throughout, that the interview was done remotely.

This is the video we have been waiting for but never thought to ask for.
“I did not get my spaghetti-o’s, I got spaghetti” 💀
Very well done. It’s very disturbing how many innocent people have been put to death.
The percentage of wrongfully accused people who end up on death row is crazy. If we can’t get it right…eliminate death row
What's also crazy (and what I just learned today) is that the death penalty is actually more expensive for taxpayers than life without parole when accounting for additional legal, pretrial, jury selection, trial and incarceration costs. Just another reason to eliminate it.
Chop their heads bury it and make fertilizer with the body?
Death row is a good thing 😂

A few years ago Tennessee executed a man who was so extremely disabled that he couldn't understand the concept of dying and insisted on saving the dessert of his last meal to eat after the execution.

When I was in school I did a photo project, documenting and then eating some requested last meals I found on the Texas Department of justice database the film makers reference. Some of the most banal requests were the most powerful; a single flour tortilla and glass of water, a bottle of coke, a cigarette.
