@@Assassin199410 UGH... It's so annoying that people like you think that... Not every giant creature is considered a kaiju, not even every giant Japanese monster is..
      Kaiju literally translates to:
      strange beast
Kaijū The term kaijū translates literally as "strange beast". Kaiju characters can be considered giant science fiction and fantasy creatures, and can be depicted as antagonistic, protagonistic, or a neutral force of nature.
.. So not only does it actually mean giant monster, it just means a strange beast, it also is only a Japanese used word, they use it to generalise giant monster movies as a genre, nothing more... And I'm willing to bet you're not Japanese.. So why do you people insist on calling every giant monster in every film a kaiju?
Technically yes, Daimajin could be considered a kaiju film since it's a sort of strange beast in a way, but I just don't get why the fuck so many people refer to every giant monster movie as a kaiju movie.. Even none Japanese ones, I only ever call Japanese giant monster movies kaiju movies since out of that context saying kaiju doesn't make any sense, it's literally just speaking Japanese for a single word out of your sentence for no reason.
Well... I ask why people call all giant monsters kaiju... But I think I already know why, it's because when Pacific Rim came out it called its monsters "Kaiju" for pretty much no reason other than to be like 'oh hey look! We're aware that Japanese people call monsters kaiju! Please, all Japanese monster fans watch our movie because we use a word that you know!"... And since then loads of people keep calling every giant monster and monster movie a kaiju film..
It's not a big deal really and I don't really care as I'm not solely exclusively obsessed with just giant Japanese monster movies.. But ugh it just irritates me..
It's just people choosing to speak Japanese for a single word for pretty much no reason, when just saying "monster movie" would mean the exact same thing and make you sound less like an idiot.

Daimajin is great. Return of Daimajin, so, so. Wraith of Daimajin is the crown jewel of the trilogy. All three films share similar stories and all have that, great, destructive and violent third act. It is the final installment that does it. Where else are you going to find a children's fantasy, sword and samurai and giant, marauding stone statue on the loose movie. The special effects in Wraith have the other two beat. Great trilogy that deserves a wider audience.

The ending of the third movie was awesome. Daimajin kept coming no matter what the bad guys did. He was indestructible to the point of being terrifying.
What I like about the films is that you have a sense of foreboding that Daimajin is coming. First the wind starts blowing strongly, then you hear his footsteps, and when you finally see him coming from a distance, it's like "Oh shit!"

As you noted in your review, not everything is seamless (for example, the proportions of the giant rubber hand attacking in close-up), but one thing the sequels have over this movie is that Damaijin walks to the village instead of teleporting in, allowing people to hear his footsteps as he approaches .

I REALLY enjoyed the first DAIMAJIN film better than the other two. That first climaxing rampage looked so colorful and dynamic. The special effects were off the chart. I first saw it at a kid about 10 or so. I remember thinking, damn, this guy is a god? A Savior? Why is he so pissed off? He was terrifying! The rampages in the following two films were not as detailed or as extensive as this first one. And the statue crumbling to dust when the war spirit leaves it was one of the best special effects sequences I've ever seen. This film came right out and hit hard with a lot of power that I felt was lacking in the 2nd and 3rd films. However, I own great prints of the trilogy. Never thought this series got the love that it deserved. It's definitely earned its place in the mix of 1960s Kaiju.

I would like to see daimajin make a return someday, he's a really cool kaiju. Imagine what it would be like if he made a comeback #continuethemonsterverse

Got the Blu Ray set for Christmas a couple years ago, and absolutely love the series. Shockingly had my dad join me for most of the third movie and he stayed through the last two thirds of it, so clearly there is some kind of general appeal. Because the scale is so much smaller you get a better sense of the destruction's danger, compared to just seeing miniatures being crushed by monster feet

A great film (not just a great kaiju film) that doesn’t get near the amount of love that it deserves.

The kaiju scenes in this series are SO GOOD. Special effects may have gotten better over the years, but I don't know if any kaiju films since have matched the artfulness of Daimajin.

Only discovered this film a few years ago and was completely blown away, it's an awesome movie. The sequels are good too, though they are basically retreads of the first one.

I own all 3. Extremely attractive and beautifully made fantasy films. In fact, I would argue that these 3 films are the standouts from Daiei in the 60's and not the Gamera films.

yay! I only saw this film back in the 70's, and maybe 4 times at most. It wasn't really shown in my area, and was derided as a 'kiddie flick' when it was. But you love the third act, when he destroys the village. "Yes! Finally! Yay!" I still don't think my family "got it" --He's a vengeful God, neither good nor evil, but but the balance shall be maintained, and he shall right it, period.
Great fun! I miss that movie.

You didn’t mention that a lot of the shots of Daimajin appear to be a full-size animatronic model built for the film as well. Even though it’s only shown briefly and can only do simple movements, it’s much more effective than when they tried the same technique in the 1976 KING KONG.
