Gil knows the truth. I’m a multimillionaire and my wife had an issue with my family, I still have to take care of my parents because they spent thousands of hours raising me…so did Kobe’s parents. He couldn’t do it without his parents who drove him to games, dropped him off, etc.

Gil was talking facts and truth from what he experienced and knew personally. I believe that Gil talked to Shannon on the truth about Kobe's parents and Vanessa's relationship behind the scene. That Shannon weren't private in knowing about it. This was a great topic discussion on this episode.

I know Kobe Bryant was a great basketball player, but I always had problems with him because of the way I perceived he treated his parents who do you think instilled that greatness in Kobe Bryant? The woman who he married her siblings, and her parents are living large, while the parents who gave life to Kobe Bryant has to sell his memorabilia for money that’s a problem and that’s sad. sometimes a woman can come along and ruin a families dynamic and that’s what happened
Maybe his parents should get a job and stop relying on handouts. Why do we have this notion that because our parents breathe life into us we are obligated to take care of them financially? Kobe family didn’t except his wife, and exiled/ abandoned him. They thought they knew better and, Kobe was gonna come running back with his tail between his legs admitting he messed up. What's interesting is that all the stories about Kobe's parents are from Kobe's perspective.
1. Why has no one ever interviewed Kobe's parents to get their side of the story?
2. Why did nobody close to him ever like Kobe Bryant? He seems to have fallen out with everyone and even his teammates seemed to tolerate him because of his basketball greatness.
3. Why do we act like Kobe's parents didn't support him during the lowest moment of his life when he was facing rape allegations, and his wife was thinking about leaving him?
4. Of what use is holding on to earthly possessions if you cannot use them when you need to?
5. Why does it seem like some people have a disdain for the old folks? Don't you realize that as you get older your capacity to make money reduces and also you get more expenses in the form of medical bills etc?
Don’t make too much sense for them. They can’t handle it. Kobe is one of the greatest ballers and I have no doubt he helped his parents, but I’m sure they felt some type of way knowing fully well he was taking way more care of his wife’s people than what he did for them. Of course, people have to be grateful but at the same time, without them, no one knows he is. It’s that simple. He couldn’t compartmentalize enough to know he could still relate with his parents and preserve his marriage, despite their disapproval. That’s what happens when folks make money at a young age.

Kobe’s parents invested heavily in his education, training and career. The fact that they had to sale those items says more about Kobe and less about his parents. This is a full circle moment and proves Kobe’s parents stance about Vanessa. They knew the type of person she was. The level of greed is beyond me. She has more money than she’ll ever need and regardless of how you felt about your in laws you can at least make sure they are straight. They are all in their old age it’s not like you have to take care of them for a long long time. You can help set up some businesses for them to where they are not dependent on you all the time. You can’t tell me this is Kobe’s wish that his parents should be suffering regardless of how the relationship was with his parents.

I respectfully disagree with Shannon on this one. Kobe's parents raised him, positioned him, and prepared him to become successful. Kobe was around NBA players and professional European players as a young child during his father's professional career. He benefitted greatly from his father's experience and guidance. In regards to money issues. Kobe made generational wealth type of money. It is sad that he allowed his parents to struggle financially. He was wealthy enough to retire his parents comfortably. In regards to the parents disagreeing with who he decided to be with. Kobe was 21 years old and the young lady was allegedly 17 years old at the time. I remember the report of them meeting while she was in high school and he was 21 years old in the NBA. That may have had something to do with the tension from the parents on both sides.

One thing Shannon needs to know no matter what beef Kobe's wife had with his parents. His parents put him in a position to be great and live a life that a lot of young boys wished to be in. Strangely, I feel the Gil perspective. I know how can the wife affect the relationship... A parent is a parent; Kobe wasn't homeless, lived in Europe, had many experiences and perspectives (dam he speaks italian) in his early life because of his father, had a two parent household, private school, the chip on his shoulder is related to his childhood livelihood (he did'nt have to struggle in the street live). If your parents didn't abuse you and met the standards where you could flourish... Honor your parents... You might be your own man, but you can manage your parents if their a nuisance; you don't need to cut them off. With the kind of money KB made, is easy to set up a trust for you parents and establish budgets within a reality... But, only the cooks know what was going on in the kitchen.
I agree with Gil's point that Kobe had opportunity to obtain all of his memorabilia from his family long ago. His parents were obviously in a financial bind to even consider selling the merchandise years ago, that's when Kobe should have paid them whatever amount and taken back ownership himself.
