      Well realistic until you realize no Prussia means why would Austria want to partition the buffer state between them and Russia, instead of supporting Poland re-exerting its independence. @@Spoon80085 If you look at it the antireform nobles were in the minority (and honestly could have been declared traitors if Poland managed to maintain its independence) and it still took Russia declaring war on Poland, and effectively holding a sham Sejm to make the Second Partition happen and invalidate the efforts of the Great Sejm to save the Commonwealth.
      Austria doesn't have to so much declare war on Russia as just be present so numbers are no long on the side of the Russians. Austrian influence also likely makes the reforms passed by The Great Sejm more palatable to the aristocracy that IRL sided with Russia.

    @user-ok3ry1gq9y Před 14 dny +44

    The first part is correct, but the next part is not. After defeating Prussia and granting East Prussia to Poland in exchange for lands in the east, Poland would be a buffer state between Austria and Russia, which would satisfy not only both powers, but also the Polish nobility. Prussia, not Russia pressed on partition. Austria was reluctant.

    • @anvos658
      @anvos658 Před 14 dny +7

      I have to agree here as it makes more sense for Austria to back Poland being free from Russian influence and then slightly expand it to the Black Sea, so the east would have a 3 power balancing act, where Poland denotes the split between the Russian and Austrian sphere, existing as a nation to ensure its in none of the 3s interest to go to war with each other, and instead focus their efforts on carving up the Ottomans, with plans to make a New Byzantium (Greece and Anatolia) an international protectorate of the 3.

      France was afraid of Russia

  • @leaderofthebunch-deadbeat7716

    Austria actually opposed the Partition of Poland because they didn't like the idea of a Catholic nation being divided between a Protestant and Orthodox power, and they only took part in it because they didn't want Prussia and Russia to take all of the Commonwealth. So in a scenario where Prussia isn't a factor I can't see them standing for Russia annexing the bulk of the Commonwealth directly even if they got some land in compensation, and it's possible they'd even go to war to prevent it if they were just up against Russia. So a weakened but independent Polish state would most likely exist in some form.

      Yeah he really seems to think an Austrian collapse is inevitable in most scenarios when it had a lot going for it before the 20th century. There are plenty of examples of multi-ethnic states being functional in the modern day. It's the same with him treating the partition of Poland like it's inevitability even when most of Europe was against it and the Commonwealth was in the process of reforming when it happened. Even in the Napoleonic victory scenario he said that creating the Duchy of Warsaw was a bad idea, even though one of France's main foreign policy goals was restoring a strong Poland to counterbalance Russia.

    I kind of had some similar ideas for a timeline exploring the consequences of various divergences during the 7 Years War (George Washington being killed in battle, Britain securing control over the Philippines, Prussia getting crushed, the Indian theatre ending in a more even stalemate, etc.). One thing I was thinking of exploring was the potential for a full marriage alliance between Catherine and Stanislaus laying the foundations for a union of the Polish-Lithuanian and Russian crowns further down the line (basically Paul still succeeds Catherine but is later deposed in a Decembrist style Liberal coup that offers the Russian Crown to the child of Catherine and Stanislaus, who had since been elected King in Poland-Lithuania, with the understanding that the Liberal dominated Duma would have full control over Russian internal affairs).

    Not sure I agree with your trajectory for Poland here as without Prussia, Poland becomes too important of a buffer state to maintain the balance between Austria and Russia. Thus I could see Poland re-exerting its independence by essentially entering into a 3 way defensive pact/alliance with Austria and Russia. Feels more like you went with Poland somehow still getting partitioned, due to how much that could change the Napoleonic Era.
    As crazy as this sounds I could see Austria ceding part of Silesia to Poland (basically so with encouraged migration you could split the german and polish population) and letting them expand a strip to the Black Sea, in exchange for Poland backing Austria taking control of the Balkans then the 3 Eastern Powers work together to turn Greece and Anatolia into a New Byzantium, basically serving as the same function as Poland in the north, being a state that splits the Austrian world from the Russian world.

    If the territory of Prussia such as Danzig and Königsberg were to be annexed by Russia after the 7 years war it would only accelerate the collapse of the Russian Empire, adding even more ethnic groups to the Russian empire that don’t want to be part of Russia. There were already the Lithuanians, Latvians, Finns, Estonians, Poles, Kazakhs, Turkic peoples, add to that the Germans in Königsberg and I forgot to mentions the Moldovans/Romanians of Bessarabia and you get an explosive mix

Rebelions, from both germans and poles, AND a risk of austrian intervention, AND a risk of revolts starting all over your country, during one of the uprisings poles with zero support weren't doing half bad, now add to it a couple hungred thousands more people and austrian help and you have a russia who is facing a lot of problems

    Good video, thanks.
    one point:
    I dont think Prussia would take the loss and never recover. Frederick II. was still way to active after the war in the OTL. If he doesnt commit suicide, abdicates or dies in a last-stand-battle somewhere, which i grant is a possibility, i believe he would try to bounce back as fast and hard as possible. So i have to disagree with the general sidelining of prussia in this scenario. Sure they are diminished but they still would try to make their voice known. Especially in regards to prussian heartlands in Poland. Since a Russo-Prussian alliance is already mentioned: Peter III definetly has the power and time to just let Prussia get territory from Poland.
    TLDR i disagree with the general inacitvity of prussia in this ATL. (Reasons: Fredericks Personality (if he lives) and Peter III. (has the time and prussia-fanboy-antics even after the 7-years-war))
    i do realize however how the scenario hinges on the inactivity or sidelining of Prussia.

      @@Samuil-iq6eb According to the vid he would rule later which still leaves a window of opportunity (way after the war of course) but 6 months of Peter is still enough for him to give prussia any boon they might ask for. What might throw a wrench is Elizabeth or Catherine having more time to realise what a nutjob/incompeten tool peter was and thus cutting time shorter. (Also wasnt his "gifted win" part of the reason he was removed so soon? Wouldnt that leave oppurtunity to have Peter reign even longer perhaps? Since he might not gift prussia anything.)

    I think it's highly possible that Napoleon and Russia just divide the continent amongst themselves, as Austria wouldn't really be that much stronger and would be opposed to Russia, while Prussia is more likely to join Napoleon in hopes of regaining their lost lands.
