LEARN POST PRODUCTION
You’re just catching your breath from a demanding shoot. You’re on your last legs but you did it; you got everything you needed in the can. It’s time for post production.
POST PRODUCTION 101
The first step in post-production is picture editing. This is where the footage is placed together in a deliberate order, and it is completed by an editor. The editor is aided by an assistant editor (or multiple assistant editors) who helps organize footage. The editor will work through the cut in stages - first the assembly, then the rough cut, the fine cut, and finally, the final cut.
ADDITIONAL VISUALS IN THE POST PRODUCTION WORKFLOW
Nowadays, there is often visual effects work to be done. This isn’t relegated to just sci-fi and fantasy projects; VFX are all over almost every movie and TV show today. The process is overseen by the VFX supervisor.
Next up is coloring which is conducted by the colorist, who typically works very closely with the cinematographer and director to get footage looking right. A colorist has two primary jobs. First, they color correct, then there’s color grading, where the coloring can become more stylized.
AUDIO POST PRODUCTION PROCESS WORKFLOW IN FILM
Sound is overseen by the supervising sound editor. First is sound editing, where all the sounds are put in place. There’s also music, which has a team including a composer, music supervisor, music editor, and more. Once all the sounds are recorded and in place, it all needs to be mixed together by the re-recording mixer.
As you can see, there’s a lot of work that goes into post-production, and it can be a lengthy process involving hundreds of people. But it’s worth putting the time and money into it. Post-production makes or breaks a movie.

do a video on this 7:40. I don't understand it

The more I watch from this series, the more I stand in awe that movies ever find their way onto the screen.
I fully agree. And also how many bad movies that come to be despite all this work.
Takes an army!
00:25 Most iconic and (sadly) frequent exchange between a filmmaker and his sound recordist. 😄
“we got it in another take”
😂
This channel is a MASTERCOURSE in movies!
Class in session!
Filmmaking is the epitome of collaborative art, the more of these videos I watch about the wide range of talent it takes to release a film the more I am impressed and mesmerized by the whole process.
This narrator is the best.
👍👍
I love this channel so much. Seeing how many roles are in filmmaking make me feel confident that I can find my way into this wild industry.
studiobinder is my lifeline rn
The detail in these breakdowns is incredible. Can't wait for the next video!
On the way!
This post-prod breakdown is so exciting! I want to be a picture editor and this definitely confirms that!
It seems like an exciding job. Hope you get to do it
Good luck!
This was impressive. A balance of broad overview and some very important details. I was surprised to hear you mentioning conforming ( Color Grading process) and Compression ( Sound Editing). When you start hitting on stuff like that without getting into the weeds. You are really hitting on some important details that will provide the members of the audience who aren't familiar with these aspects of the process, the information they need to begin to take a deeper dive if they want to.
best CZcams channel i ever watch , please continue uploading this videos , they are so good
More on the way!
I cannot thank StudioBinder enough for helping me to better understand the entire filmmaking process. I've gained so much knowledge and feel more confident moving forward with my own weird little films! Thanks a million!!!
Bro, another incredible video from an essential channel for all film students.
Felt like a nice good afternoon TV episode... good vibes, loved it
I am only a consumer of film, do not know anything, but must say, the "post production" phase are perhaps the most mysterious of the film process
It's where a lot of the movie magic is ;)
@@StudioBinder - hehe! Yes, that's the mysterious part
Very edifying video ...
Terrific work StudioBinder.
This is why I feel like the acadamy needs to revisit the category of Best Sound Mixing and Sound Editing; both totally different and hard work to do
Thank you for always sharing excellent content with upbeat vibes!
Cheers!
You are amazing and this series is incredible. Please continue this series

Such an important video. I always wondered how they edit physical films. Studio Binder is the best. ❤
It's a cool process!
Brilliant and Fantastic well done Studio Binder can't wait for the next video
Coming soon!
Absolutely loved it, thank you for another awesome video
Cheers!
great job to the editor(s) for this video! Also just applied for an open position :D
An interesting aspect maybe for episode 2 could be how to combine all the exports of all these departments together (conforms).
Many deliverables can be made, depending on where the film will be diffused, the type of audience, festival outputs. As well for archives, DCP files, etc.
As always, beautiful work. I never click so fast when I see a thumbnail on CZcams.
Appreciate the feedback!
Thanks for that! Very explanatory!🙂
Thank You Sir🫡
Thanks for watching!
I've always loved the technical details of filmmaking, but it's been years since I've been crewed on an actual set (and even when I was, it was small-time video production, not films). I love that you've included both the old and the modern techniques in this video. It helps an old-timer like me stay up to date on the industry.
Any plans to do more in-depth videos about editing? That was one of my favorite areas.
We'll definitely be doing more editing related vids
That quick Pachino cut was genius!😂
👌💯
😄Eddie Hamilton looks exactly like Marco Beltrami. Also, I never thought I would hear of SANs or RAIDs in a StudioBinder video! "Just when I thought I was out... they pull me back in" 😂
😁 More on the way
Thank you again for an amazing and so valuable video!!
Happy to :)
Salute to this channel.
Greetings in today 💪🎬🌲✨
Welcome!
5:30 remembered me about that movie with John travolta, and I forgot the name of it. After a few minets googleing, find it - Blow Out. I like how he disocvered the shot before the crush car in the film. Nice!
I love these videos. Many thanks.
Glad you liked it!
Wonderful - and here I am an old guy making animated shorts all by myself - no wonder they are terrible - God Bless
haha going solo isn't easy!
This is quite condensed. Quite the feat to cram it in to 20 minutes. Each section could be an hour long and it would be diffucult to cover most aspects well.
I'm from the sound side of the production and post production fields. The Foley section was a little short, as the artists and mixers often produce sounds even editors will struggle to cobble together. Perhaps you should have quoted a few lines from David Yewdalls book :) . Lots of juicy ones to pick from.
Book recommendations "Practical Art of Motion Picture Sound" David Lewis Yewdall , "Dialogue Editing for Motion Picture" by John Purcel , "Foley Grail" by Vanessa Theme Ament. There's probably way more by now too.
True, we'll be probably be exploring the individual sections in future videos!
Hello Studio Binder! This was an awesome video! I would love to see a video where you break down the dynamics of the movie „The big short“, especially script wise & structure of the story, as well as the usage of montage and breaking the fourth wall! Maybe you could add the movie to the your list and put it into a suitable category of your types of videos! Greetings from Austria
Thanks for the suggestion! We have two videos on montages you would like czcams.com/video/29xvA9Ly7IQ/video.html czcams.com/video/IrNY_WcUtMU/video.html
Ayy! So good to see Thomas Boykin featured here. I've been watching his videos recently even though I know nothing about sound editing and mixing. 😂
🔥💖
Amazing series and beautiful communication, it is my favorite channel. I think I heard Hitchcock name the cut, instead of ''the assembly''...
So many great details in such a great manner and measure, thank you for exciting moments while always being given a chance to learn something. Best regards from Montenegro. Or 'Greetings' like the film where De Niro had one of the first roles//parts if I'm not mistaken.
You guys are crushing it. Thank you for the excellent work.
Thanks for watching!
It will be cool if you can make an video on the tools used in each stage of post.
Excelente trabajo, muchas gracias
Thanks for watching!
That was enlightening.
Great to hear!
You're awesome guys!!💥 Will the subject of "deliverables" & screening formats be covered in the last video of this series?
Stay tuned ;)

You’re always using beautiful melodies for these videos. Is there a place where I can find a list of them maybe? What is the song’s name that plays from 08:46? I love it. Thank you very much.
You can find all of them listed in the description in order of appearance!
As a musician trying to learn basic 3D VFX workflow for my videos, I wish this segment dealt more with compositing, which as I understand is not done in After Effects but in Nuke.
@Studiobinder will you have Post Post production Episode 5?
We need a video on color grading
Please make a vedio about importants of colour in scenes
bro i've just subscribed your channel you're 1 of my favourite, can you make a video on john woo please?
We might!
So should i send my footage to colour grading individual shots wise or after the rough cut ?
ln regards to sound design, they really need to sort out differences in levels between music soundtrack and spoken lines. lve lost count in how many productions lve viewed that require turning volume down with sound fx & soundtrack then having to turn volume up to hear dialogue.
Or am l the only one who has that problem?
Can you explain how the recorded footage during shooting. Like how they manage the footage of the scenes shot in different frames and angles and also different schedules
You should check out our previous episode on film production! czcams.com/video/puF9CkvmJt0/video.html

*If I watch your videos time and again will this repetition help me remember what you teach? Does this method work??🤔*
You are referring to training, but you also need to practice to solidify a skill. So learn then practice. 😊
That’s basically what I’m doing lol
@@thisisarmando *Yes sir, you're right that I must put it practical practice otherwise it won't work but I'm saying that in order to learn the theory should I watch it again and again will it work to remember?*

Please Please make a video on how to shoot film with multiple cameras. Can a film be successfully completed with just one camera?
Budding filmmakers who are about to start their 1st film, struggle with these questions. Please make a video for *"a filmmaker who is about to make his 1st film. What all resources he need?"*
We probably will! And to answer your first question, yes it can be done with one camera

You guys should really put energy into fixing all the bugs in your software instead of making social media vids. Is 2018 really the last time you updated the software?
We updated it in the last few months!
@@StudioBinderaccepting dual dialog in a fdx (it currently just deletes that dialog without even alerting you), and having undo when editing scripts would be nice.
I think even by the end of the 90's movies moved to digital postproduction even though production and screening were still film.
What was interesting about Oppenheimer is that after the movie was digitally edited, they went back and cut the internegatives or interpositives together to match the digital version and made the release prints optically from those. A callback to the days when the whole process was analog.
Interesting trivia!
Can't wait for the next one. And I mean it.
On its way!
*Could you make a video on 'Comedic Device' or 'Comedy Literary Devices'?❤*
We might!
Great video :) Cheers 🤩Could explain the difference in offline and online editing. What it is and how it works? I hear it is about the downsizing the files size to make the editing flow easier.
Offline refers to using proxy files, which are smaller, lower quality versions of the originals. This is done both to take up less space and for better performance when editing.
Online refers to using the original high quality files, which is crucial for color grading and VFX.
@@KaurH Nice 👍
Thank you : )@@KaurH
So it's the mixing part that's responsible for the fucked up dialogue-explosion sound balance in modern movies.
Mixing is the main factor
Interestingly enough Gary Fleder the director of Don't Say A Word doesn't do an Assembly Cut and just goes straight to the Rough Cut
Sounds daring haha
@@StudioBinder He gives his justification for doing this on his commentary track for the aforementioned film. I haven't listened to it in a while but basically he doesn't want to watch a four hour version of something that is supposed to be two and he just ends up hating everything about it
I disagree with your definitions. CGI doesn’t mean totally created in computer. It means aspects of the shot are computer generated. It can be used in composite shots and mocap shots. Definitions like this are why films like Top Gun can claim to use 'no cgi' when 99% of a captured shot is replaced by digital creations.
A shot can have parts of it made with CGI. But that still makes CGI computer generated imagery no?
