- Testing some of the most powerful 40 Caliber ammo available for muzzle velocity, energy, expansion and ballistic gel penetration: chronograph and ballistic gel shooting tests with a 4" barrel Springfield XD-40
The 180 grain Federal Premium HST law enforcement round averaged 369 foot-pounds of energy
The 155 grain Hornady XTP round loaded by Underwood averaged 549 foot-pounds of energy
The 135 grain Nosler projectile loaded by Underwood averaged 554 foot-pounds of energy
You know its funny. I tend to see alot more people testing and bashing on the 40, when they choose to test thru the actual compact firearms. In my opinion the 21st century version of pocket guns. When I run across reviews for the longer barreled firearms seems to me the 40 shows a clear advantage over the 9. Dont get me wrong I like and own a couple of 9s. But I do love my 40. As much as I see people say it's not a good woods gun I've never felt under protected with it.
100%
I've seen exactly the same. The 40 ammo that was developed between 1990 and 2015 was almost exclusively designed for 4" or longer barrels because it was primarily a law enforcement round. During the same 25 years, 9mm became relegated to a civilian defensive caliber and new technology was applied accordingly. As a direct result, 9mm is now a fantastic performer from 3" barrels and in my opinion that's where it should stay. 40 is still the better option in full size autos (although I think 357 Sig may be the best of all, especially in 5" barrels where the bottlenecked round can achieve a more complete powder burn).
@@GeographyCzar I've just spent the last few hours going thru CZcams and watching some of the channels plugging woods guns. Oddly I watched someone compare 40 cal and 10 mm. And the test he did showed the same Penetration between the 2. Stating the results were his minimum he'd consider for the area he is at. I've also noticed alot are comparing 9mm +p and +p+ to the 40. So having to raise the 9 to the hottest loads to show a comparison. Again I love the 9. Own a couple and its my daily. But seems disingenuous to harp the 40 is obsolete. From everything I've read the 40 is more than adequate for a woods carry. Which to be honest as much as I like the 9 I would feel under gunned in more western and southern states. Depending on what the wild life is. I was very happy to run across this channel and see someone being honest and having so much fun with the 40
The other big advantage to the 40 ( at least with the glock 22, haven't looked at other manufacturers) is that with barrel swaps you can get the glock 22 to fire both the 9mm and 357 sig. Seems to me thats something that would add a huge advantage to 40 ( at least when the glock 22 is used)
I've successfully used 40s&w vs a black bear and a cougar in the past so I agree. Outside of a big brown bear, I feel pretty safe w my G23 and underwood 165/180 grain projectiles.
@@robertherek4020 G23 compact also!
.40sw = the best self defense round, heavy, fast, big and high capacity..
Totally agree.

I carry the Underwood 155 grain terminal ballistics that puts out 582 fpe…. I own +p+ 9mm that doesn’t come close and it “snaps” like a 40. The Underwood rounds out of my Glock 23 Gen 5 shoots like a dream 😌 I stopped carrying my G19 for that reason. I get over 120 -150 fpe more in my 40 depending on what ammo I’m using in my 9mm
@@g-man9743
I carry Speer gold dot 165gr in my Glock22.
@@perplexingperceptions8888 that an excellent choice 💪🏾
100% fully agree! .40 s&w is the ideal cartridge caliber for semi-auto handguns! but 180gr was always too heavy for the .40 s&w, great for the 10mm auto though, between 135gr minimum and 165gr maximum parameters is best, with 155gr/150gr bullet weight being ideal!
i am sad that the sheeple just follow the herd and choose 9mm cause the herd does, like ffs 9mm has 80% of the market, come on people, in an era of 12+ rounds in even compact handguns and extra mags, the capacity argument is a moot point and bs, and i could tear apart all the rest of the arguments too, including cost, i am not even saying .40 s&w should be number 1 or even 2, if it is 6th out of 10 of the top semi-auto handgun cartridge calibers then that is ok too, as long as it doesn't go away and is available, but the 9mm sheeple fanboys obsession with 9mm is ludicrous, at best the top spot should have 40% of the market at the most! so frustrating, i cannot wait until 9mm loses it's shine and the pathological obsession with it evaporates!
I think it's funny that the very first thing people do that have 9mms is hunt for the hottest round they can find, yet they think the 40 S&W is over powered.
Indeed. "40 has too much recoil to get back on target fast - but my 17oz 9mm with +p+ ammo is practically a race gun!" LOLz I think they've never tried both back to back.
yeah… i have a 9mm loaded with +p 124gr gold dots. i’ve considered buying the +p+ underwood has in the 124gr or maybe the 147gr. but i also have a shield in .40 because i wanted something small with more power. i just carry both 🤷♂️
@@acid6urns Sounds like I nailed it.
lol I noticed the same thing. They brag about +p rounds they pay a premium for when you could just shoot your average .40 round
i am a 40 and a 9 guy. This is the video all 9mm cheerleaders hate to see. I love the 9 for the evening or beach wear in my Sig 365XL. But if I am in my vehicle and might be in a situation requiring a more powerful round, the 40 S&W in my Glock 23 is my choice. Hey guys, both are great rounds. The 40 ain’t goin anywhere. There are literally “millions” of 40 S&W owners in this country. No manufacturer is going to surrender that hugh/massive market. Just get use to it, the 40 is here to stay, so is the 9mm. Thank you so much for making this video. It is so funny just hearing you giggle with enjoyment as you are having so much fun. Lovin it.
The limp wristed 9mm guys will call this fake and then mumble something about recoil.
The first to one well placed shot is what we’re after folks, and the .40 loaded to its true potential is a ballistic advantage.
Back in January I bought a Glock22 & I was expecting brutal wrist breaking recoil & to my surprise it didn't feel much different than my Glock19 9mm.
@@perplexingperceptions8888 Yeah. According to the internet experts, the .40 “short & weak” has the power of a .22 with the recoil of a .44 mag. Oh, and you can only fit 2 in a magazine. Smh.
@@perplexingperceptions8888 i've had a gen3 g22 for a couple of years and have not cared for it at all. the gun likes to give me slide bite and the recoil does sting my hand. i fixed that. i built out a polymer 80 frame and swapped out all the guts from the stock frame to the p80. no slide bite and recoil is much more manageable.
@@MrSGL21 Try a stainless guiderod on that G22. Makes a good difference.
@@357Franknitty it doesn't. i did that previously.
I love how much fun this dude this having.
You know a round has some stank behind it when the muzzle blast shakes the chronograph.
A compact 40 usually has more power than a full size 9mm. The example I'm thinking of is the Glock 27 vs the 17. 40cal is the best cal
@H G the Smith&Wesson shield m&p m2.0 40s&w is pretty nice
well yea. 40 beats 357 in short barrels
@@CL-ty6wp it absolutely does not by any measurable scientific metric in any circumstance. There's many videos on tests of the glock33 vs the 27. The 357 sig usually has an extra 80-100ft lbs
@@thateffinguy2422 underwood has factory 135s going 1400 out of a g23 and 135 40s can be handloaded to 1500fps. Show me a 357 with a g23 sized barrel that does that, i'll wait.
@@thateffinguy2422 I was talking mag not sig btw. Mag is very barrel length picky compared to the 40. 357 mag with 135's and a 3" barrel can maybe get high 1200's. G23 barrel is 4 "but in actuality its 3" because the chamber is included with pistols;unlike revolvers.
I'm pretty sure the 357 sig isnt hitting 1400-1500fps with 135s though either.
Love that test. REAL Organic gel!! Look at the damage path you can see in organic vs clear gel. Thanks for bringing this to us. Awesome performance for that XTP bullet. XTP's don't expand as much but they penetrate very well. Great hunting bullets in several calibers. And the 135 gr Nosler, WOW! that's an energy dump!
Just picked up both of these loads and the 200 grain nosler. Great testing.
I still smile and shake my head when folks say, "the new 9mm are so much better than 40/45. New technology, etc."
Y'all understand they apply those new technologies/techniques to all their defense ammo, right?
I really like 40S&W. I own 3. Generally carry 357Sig (open) or 3" 9mm (concealed). That's no comment on the effectiveness of the 40, or even the 45. They're less expensive for me to reload.
Yes, it's amazing how many people took that claim about 9mm Luger's sudden transformation by the new wonder projectiles into the equal or superior of the heavier calibers just based on a few published gel test results. I have yet to see any actual results that show that the newer bullet designs in fact perform markedly better than the old ones did let alone that show the 9mm round has really been elevated in capability by using them. I still carry 9mm but only when it is impractical to carry something bigger. Maybe the information is out there, but I sure haven't been able to find it, and I found the FBI gel test report to be unconvincing, to put it charitably. I can believe some of their pint-sized recruits struggle with recoil beyond that of a 9mm, but we used to hire agents based on capability and not on quotas.
There are a very limited amount of bonded 9mm loads that “meet the standards”, yet all of them have been crowned equal to clearly more effective chamberings. Just wait until 9mm is promoted for bear defense.
Amen! Every single, and I do mean every fkin one, 9mm person makes that "advanced technologies" argument..they forget it applies to ALL modern calibers. If "advanced ammo technologies" make your 9mm as good as a .40. Then the very same "advanced ammo technologies" makes our 40 cal just as good as 10mm, which still leaves 9mm behind🤣 They just don't seem to comprehend.40 is a bigger more powerful cartridge and it always will be, no matter how they design that 9mm HP, 40 will come along with the same loading and.still knock it's socks off.
What I think they are saying is technology finally got 9mm to the point where they believe it might work.
Back, some 20years or so I was deciding upon which pistol to buy/get. I had owned several revolvers by this time and and was just caught up in the HUGE ammo capacities of these pistols. After shooting 9mm up to .45 ACP I settled on the .40S/W round since it was a bit more "stout" than the 9mm but more fun to shoot than the .45ACP in volume. I bought my 1st XD 4.5" and now own 2 more in the XDM variation.
It's a fantastic gun, and magnificent caliber. 40 S&W rivals 45 acp and leaves 9mm in the dust.
They're great pistols aren't they? I train with an XD-M .40 w/4.5" bbl, and I'm going to keep it for as long as it runs - I see no need to change up. Plus, when 9mm prices go up and stock goes down - the .40 ammo will be around. It was still available during the Covid run on ammo when 9mm was sometimes hard to get.......
Nice comparison, Dave. Thanks!
I've heard of pulling a quarter out from behind someone's ear. But putting a quarter in someone's chest is a whole other kind of magic trick... Nice video.
Thank you for listing the barrel length, most other videos they just throw Glock numbers at me, and I don't care enough about blocks to Google the barrel lengths.
But right out the back 4" barrel awesome! On to the tests.
Subscribed!
Shot some today out of my Shield 40 and they performed great! The re aiming was fast.
Excited to see you test the 155 gr underwood. Great performance !
It is phenomenal. I own several boxes. Best XTP load in any caliber I've tested.
Federal made a 135gr HST in 40s&w long ago, it was contract overrun ammo that showed up on the civilian market. They weren’t loaded to their full potential of course… I’d like to have some of those projectiles to load in 10mm and 40s&w. Great video. Thanks.
Thosw we're very nice rounds.. but like you said they were slow
You're right they did... and so did Winchester, they also made a .40 135gr JHP load for the Border Patrol ? IIRC.
These two underwood loadings are exactly what I use in my 40’s. I load one 155 gr XTP’s and then a 135 gr Nosler. I get penetration out of the XTP and a whoop of energy dump from the Nosler. Don’t talk about how this will make it unreliable because I’ve never had any issues. My guns are designed to feed both cartridges and do so very well. I’ve always got quality ammo from Underwood and it’s my go to ammo company. Thanks for the great review sir.
Nice video bud , I'm glad to see that that somebody is showing just what of a rocket launcher the 40 Smith & Wesson really is
I constantly shoot
!42gr at1450fps
157gr at 1250 with another 100ft to go ( same as the 357 Magnum 158 at 1240 fps )
Thats ^^^ my favorite
Excellent video. I can't help but wonder what the one-shot ballistics results would be through a carbine-length firearm. Not only that but the ballistics through a submachinegun in three-shot [burst] groups. Whatever the outcome, I think it would be horrific.
Great offerings. Thanks.
I prefer 40 overall and love the Federal 180 fmj for its great penetration in the woods, hollowpoints for though for self defense two legged.
10mm is fine for outdoors use in the field but in its hottest samples its not close to optimum for self defense. One thing I constantly see with the 10mm guys are lots of ammo related failures, especially with the long custom barreled glocks. For me my 40 pushing 180gr fmj at 1000fps has amazing penetration and is sufficient. If I need more I don't even consider 10mm and go for 44mag, 45colt/454, and 500.
Very, very interesting test.At least the 135 grain Nosler rond didn't disintegrate in the gel, but this doesn't give me a warm, fuzzy feeling about having that same projectile in 10mm as a self-defense load.
Correct.
Thank you for making the video
Nicely done!
Thank you! Cheers!
I use Underwood 155 in my S&W M&P2 40 and in my 40 Shield. I also rotate with the Underwood 140 grain penetrator. The best ammo without any hiccups.
Agreed no matter what rounds I'm shooting in any of my guns I always pick ones that are plus P if available light for caliber except for the 9 m m and have sealed primers which means all of my 9mmm are putting out close to 400 foot-pounds of energy my forties are putting out between High 400's/ft lb to High 500's ft/lbs and the notorious .45 acp just cant seem to break mid 500 ft/lbs but what it lacks in penetration it makes up for in girth and henceforth stopping power .. but no matter what hollow-points I'm running I always mix in a few Underwood Xtreme Defenders usually a couple mid magazine and then the last couple shots of the magazine because I figure if I haven't stopped my Target in the first five rounds I probably need more penetration and if I'm at the end of my mag same line of thought although they swear and many people swear that their fluted nose design is better than a jacketed hollow-point or a solid copper hollow point .. I just can't get over what the right weight for caliber jacketed hollow-point will do to ballistic gelatin but I also like I said mix in solid copper either penetrators but more so extreme Defenders just in case I'm not getting my message through .. granted when you load your magazine you have to load it keeping in mind that you could be standing face-to-face to somebody where you may have to shoot through a car window or a wall or God forbid in a grocery store through steel shelving or you take the same gun out in the woods I'd personally don't really feel like reloading my whole magazine to set it up for Hogs and alligators so I just threw a couple solid copper Underwood in the middle and the end of the magazines to make sure I have stopping power and penetration
Bought a glock 23 gen 5 a few months ago. Shoots smooth and the recoil isn’t bad. It feels about the same recoil as my lc9. I was deciding between 10mm and 40 but went with 40 because it balances power and capacity well. Also ammo won’t break the bank and is readily available. 10mm ammo is just a lot more expensive and not as easy to find.
I got a 10 mm M&p that I got last week and I'm picking up my Glock 23 tomorrow 😂. I'll tell you this with certainty, if you do decide to get the 10 mm. You'll love it. I ordered 60 rounds of Underwood 200 gr XTP, and boy I'll tell you what, not an ounce of regret.
Refreshing to see I'm not the only one that still loves the 40s&w... as well as 357 sig in the comment section. My 2 faves. I understand the 357 is more expensive and not as readily available, but I like both much better than 9mm. Just my humble opinion tho. Shoot what you're comfortable with 👍
I love it to in my M&P 2.0, as well as my SR1911, bought some of the underwood for 45 haven't tried them yet ,I will definitely buy some underwood 40s next week .
357sig is best girl
158gr hard cast hollow point at 1100fps hand loads no sweat!!
All hard all the time!
And 125gr XTP at 1400 is nice too 😊
From a threaded 5" barrel.
CorBon made a 135 grain +P .40 S&W load. When Handgun Stopping Power came out with the statistics and data from actual shootings. This was in the early 90’s and only a few incidents reported with one shot stops!
The problem with the Nosler Bullet would fragment in this particular load. Underwood is good ammunition pretty close to advertised velocity.
not sure why they chose to make it a +p load. you can get well over 1400fps and 600e within saami. guess it's just a marketing ploy
Great video Dave, those that say s&w 40 stands for short and weak need to watch this video. Dude from the military channel bashes 40 cal. all day long and yet carries a 9mm which of course is much weaker, go figure. Big thumbs up for you!
40s&w is my Fav ...Underwood is my fav too ..
Great video that’s awesome 😎
Would love to see you test the 40s&w 60grain civil defense rounds at advertised velocity of 2000fps
I've bought and shot some they're great for about 3-4 inches .. they act like a varmint load and dump all of their energy immediately so if you're in Florida defending yourself against the guy in shorts and flip-flops he's going to have a bad day I mean anybody getting hit by something screaming that fast is going to have a bad day but you're just not going to get the terminal ballistics out of something that light.. they're made right here in town close to where I live and during covid everybody had them loaded up on the shelves because they were made locally and it was all they could get their hands on and they didn't sell very well even when they were the only thing on the Shelf .. however I would like to see what one would do to a raccoon or armadillo😂
Interesting about all of the 40cal detractors, just compare the foot pound energy of a 165 grain 40cal to any 9mm and it’s equals or exceeds 9 +p or even +p+. Larger round with more energy displaced. 😊 And I EDC a 40, have a 9mm and carry a 10mm in the woods.
yup. if you look at factory 40 loads, you have to look at 165gr. 180gr .40 is almost always ridiculously underloaded. underwood the only ones who don’t.
I love ammo tests.
Gotta love the XTP :)
Did the 155 grain have more kick or did the 135 grain?
Good video dude 👍 make more
Hey buddy, just a little advice, you need to tape your jell block down to the table, some of your energy dump is being absorbed by simply knocking your jell block off the table, you'd get a better result if it was solid, Cheers mate... 😀👍

Damn, I clicked on this video because I use the 180 grain Federal HST jhp, and I was looking forward to your results on ballistic gel and got to the end of the video with no test of the federals in the ballistic gel 😥
Well, you need to get off the 180grn. 40sw tit.
The FBI and the ammo makers that lick their boots are the brightest bunch. Lighter, faster, closer to 357mag ballistics will incapacitate instantly. We carry what will drop a man now. We can't wait for bleed out. A pulminary pressure spike is what is necessary.
I chronographed the 135gr out of my 96a1, which had a 5 inch barrel, and averaged 1420fps.

It's a special breed for sure.
You couldn’t pop off a Fed premium round in gel?
I just noticed something about pistol barrel length, if you have a revolver with a 6" barrel, you have a 6" barrel, but if you think your simi-auto pistol has a (????) barrel, measure it again, minus the length of your respective ammo, your barrel starts at the front of the chamber, "Just like a revolver", the barrel is only as long as the part the bullet travels down. Cheers Mates.

Ideal. Thanks for the field report!
@@GeographyCzar thanks for the video/review. I love 40 and argue how under rated it is. It's funny how people will claim to know firearms and ballistics and ignore the simple math and the velocity and energy actually needed to take down medium, thin skinned game. Within a certain distance with this ammo, it's plenty capable and humane.
People tend to follow the crowd and ignore facts. They will change their EDC because so called "experts" load a smaller caliber a little hotter, which in the end will still not perform as well as the 40 and will wear out the firearm, springs and all, faster than before. The funny thing about that is, it is one of the arguments for switching from the naturally hot 40 caliber.
@@kentuckyearl8202 Do you think this bullet would be good for hunting w a carbine? Some "experts" as you say have told me the bullet wont expand good being pushed too fast out of a 16"in barrel. Would the penetrators or defenders be better? Thanks for any response as I am kinda new to the gun world but I do love me some 40 s&w
The 40 Smith & Wesson was designed to make the 10 mm cartridge smaller it was supposed to have the similar ballistics with a shorter case kind of like the 762 / 51 and the the police load for the 40 Smith & Wesson's 135 grain bullet doing close to 1500 feet per second you can't even find that all they got is 165 and 180, even with these bullets it works good but it works great with the with the 135 grain hollow.45 or even hardball not round nose
I'd use that 155gr xtp for a hunting load!!! I've seen what they can do on deer, and hogs. It's bad medicine for them, especially when you use a full size 40s&w pistol
Love carrying the 40 S&W round, it works for me and I train with it all the time, people told me to carry 9mm all the time for my size just because they heard it from the FBI, I have the best luck with the 40 S&W round, well protected and positive with it, wish more firearm companies can jump more on making 40 S&W pistols and not follow the 9mm bs trend in the gun community
The underwood stuff seems to vary significantly in power. 4 months ago AZ AIRGUNNER got 1,402 fps in the Glock 27 with the 135 gr and 1501 in the Beretta 96A1, 3 weeks ago he only for 1,276 in the Glock 27. I bought a few boxes 4 months ago so hopefully it’s the uber stuff! Lol
40 in the woods and in the hoods. 40 does it all.
The lighter gr bullet would make a great home defense rds for in home 👍 no over penetration.
I like the Nosler. More expansion means more damage. Less penetration means more difficult to treat. For self defense, that little 165 gr might be just what the Dr didnt order.
Right on
.40 s&w is the ideal cartridge caliber, but 180gr was always too heavy for the .40 s&w, great for the 10mm auto though! between 135gr minimum and 165gr maximum parameters is best, with 155gr/150gr bullet weight being ideal!
also i like the full-size m&p 2.0 handgun, i have two full-size m&p 2.0's, both chambered in .40 s&w obviously lol, i like glocks too, just not as much as the m&p 2.0, i have a glock 17 and a glock 22, both gen 5
You are dead right! My brother was a big proponent of the .40 S&W as it was developed just when he was "coming of age" - I believe a .40 was one of the first handguns he purchased. He told me so much about the .40 back in the 90s, most of which I've forgotten. Now that I'm experimenting with his old Springfield (now mine) I've relearned a lot of what he tried to tell me. And you are clearly ahead of me. 155 grains is about the sweet spot.
The 155gr 40 S&W is a true hot rod. I love how people think the 9mm is the best round then brag about the 10mm.
In some 3 videos I have watched, the 180gr has penetrated more than the 155gr. What are the reasons you have to say the 155 is better than the 180? TIA
@@mandapalque they always seem to be loaded hotter and create higher energy
@largelarry2126 I agree. They create WAY more energy. Underwood has a 150gr and a 155gr with a 5" barrel. You may reach 1,300fps. Equivalent to 582poe. That is light 357 magnum fpoe numbers.
Very good video sir. The .40 cal works.
The underwood ammo is probably tested in a 5" barrel to get listed velocity.
It must be because it's consistently fallen short in my 4" Springfield. Not by a lot, but the difference is there.
4.6 inch barrel
40S&W is a great self defense round, I prefer 357Sig with Underwood ammo as well. 10mm is great for woods carry!
40 has always been one of my favorite rounds I never got the hate. I do like 10mm better but 40 is an awesome defense round. I love 9mm but 40 is definitely superior for a self defense round. Also witj my g22 i can shoot 357 sig
Nice. I prefer the underwood round you didn’t test. The 150g nosler load at 1300fps. The 135g is a bit light for me for SD. But it is still one of my favorites. Although my all time favorite underwood 40 load was the 155g speer gold dot load. They stopped loading it about 5 years ago. For some reason they still offer it in 10mm only 🙄
I tested the 150 grain Underwood Nosler off camera. It penetrated about 12" and expanded quite well. In my 4" barrel I got an average velocity of 1244 fps. It compares pretty well with the 155 grain Winchester Silvertips, which you can get on Lucky Gunner for less than a buck a round, if they still have them in stock. If I get more interest in .40 I'll test more on camera. Thanks for the comment!
When I carry my xd-s 40, I keep the critical defense.. them things get 1150 over my Chrono with a 165 grain ftx
They are an excellent choice. I tested them in one of my 40 Friday videos: czcams.com/video/WFdlG4lSbzE/video.html
Which grain of all 40cal, do u like best?
Gonna have to go with 155 gr. I want to like 165 better because at least it's heavier than almost any 9mm or .38, but I have to admit my brother was right (this used to be his gun), 155 seems like the sweet spot for 40 cal.
Honestly it doesn't really matter what you use whether it 9mm, 40s&w, 45acp, or 10mm as long as you put it where it counts it'll stop them especially with today's available loading!!! For 9mm I run either speer 124+p gold dots, or winchester USA ready in 124gr+p. My wife runs same, and in 40s&w she runs the Remington htp rounds, and in 10mm I run colt defense by double tap, or double tap 200gr hardcast, and some times the federal fusion 200gr jsp
Wow, your wife shoots a .40? Nice!
@@GeographyCzar yep she even shoots it with winchester Silvertip that are advertised at just over 500 ftlbs in 40s&w!!!
I was waiting for the Fed HST 180 gel test... I happen to have 500 of those pills lol = got a good deal on them.
OH, yes, I did that in a video I can't remember right now. They perform well, but so do 9mm HSTs and etc. I should do a retest... I'm in the middle of getting my house ready to sell, but maybe I'll get to that in July. Thanks for the request!
I bought a bunch of the 165 and 180 gr HST cheap just to stock up and cuz it performs well but ew 369 ft lbs of energy lol thats so low. Still performs well I guess. The Underwood stuff seems to vary but AZ AIRGUNNER had a box where the 135’s were hitting 1,402 fps out of a Glock 27 and 1,501 out of a 4.9” Beretta :0 I bought a few boxes of them the day he released that video, hopefully they are as hot lol. Bout to find out what you get with them here in a second. Im using the same barrel length as you with a Glock 23
Edit: Oohh 548 ft lbs for the 155’s. The chrono was shaking!! Lol
Those rounds would have been about spot on for velocity out of a 5" barrel.
I've been fed 180gr by my department for years for my G22s. And now that we've downgraded to 9mm, I'm stuck with 147gr. I think the heavier bullets make Glocks more palatable, but they are far from the optimal load even for big box ammo. My CZ Shadow 2 and Tanfoglio Defiant .40 get fed 115gr and 165gr respectively.
155gr practice .40 is impossible to find.
There's some at buds in the town I work in.🤣🤣🤣 Quite a bit actually.
Many LE Agencies have gone back to the 147 grain Winchester SXT T Series, Speer Gold Dot, Federal HST, Remington Golden Saber.
I remember the early 90’s with many departments making the switch over to the Subsonic 147 grain ammunition. The reports of over penetration with one incident out in California where a Deputy shot the armed robber with that bullet going through him shattering the glass panel and striking the store employee killing him.
The newer technology in ammunition has improved since then. The .40 S&W in 165 grain HST, Gold Dot and SXT is my choice.
American Eagle can be found all over the place.
@@boostimalaka1 no such thing as stx t series. there was sxt with black coated projectiles. t series and sxt are different items.
@@livebaitlarry5783 SXT was not black coated because of the bad publicity the Black Talons had from the infamous Long Island Railroad massacre. The SXT was the same exact bullet without the black coating. The SXT was the first, followed by the T Series and PDX1 designs. My issued SXT was not a black colored bullet.
I think 40 45 & 10mm just scare the shit out of most fellas when they shoot them. If so the best thing to do is admit that and move on. If so they make some really fine rounds in the 32 cal 25 auto and 380 and after you had a few IPAs with your Hipster bud's you can step up to the 380s big brother the 9mm but hold on to your skinny jeans because they got some kick.
ROFL!!
It's not quite that bad. .40 is actually stupid-fun to shoot, but kinda uncontrollable, point of aim goes haywire pretty fast when you try to execute a mag-dump with 500 ft-lbs of energy in each shot. 10mm is far worse. For hitting where you're aiming, there's no substitute for .22 lr. It's just too easy, you feel like you're not doing anything.
Hahahahahaha
I shoot 180gr 40 and i drink ipa from time to time. Those bitches can get pretty strong 😭😭
Soy lattes before the range trip 😂 👌
I carry .40 and 9mm. Am wanting a 10mm but haven't found a platform that suits me yet.
Sig p220 legion $$$
@alex jackson I like thumb safties and I like Smiths, just not convinced of the reliability yet.
I have the 135’s and they don’t kick that hard in my Glock 23. Thanks for the test, I can see how they should perform in my 4.02” barrel lol. Maybe the 0.04” makes a difference 🤣? Jk. I want some of the 155’s now. But the 135 gr did insane lmao
Get a lone wolf barrel in a glock and you can safely do 135 gr at 866 fpe/1700 fps out of a 6” barrel and 720 fpe / 1550 fps for a 135 grain out of a 4”, For 155 grain, you can get 826 fpe/1550 fps out of the 6” and 674 fpe/1400 fps out of the 4”. For 165 gr you can get 667 fpe/1350 fps out of the 4” (no data for 6” for 165gr). For 180 gr you can get 675 fpe/1300 fps out of the 6” and 528 fpe/1150 fps out of the 4”. For 200 grain, 639/1200 fps out of the 6”, and 537 fpe/1100 fps out of the 4”.
This seems extreme but Ive never once heard of anyone having an issue at these velocities and seen a few people on youtube with the exact same loadings and verifying with chronograph. Everyone used either lone wolf in a Glock 22 or 23, or put a Glock 40 slide on a Glock 23 and with a proper length lone wolf barrel (I believe 6”) and there’s also a frame gap piece you can cover the gap with.
A $10 tarp would help with the Table Jumpers
Some people opt for round count, I opt for ft lbs energy and a lower round count..
I came to see the 135 grain. I bought a box of Corbon 135 grain rated at 1325. I stayed for the psychotic laughing.
The 135gr did EXACTLY what it was supposed to do. Hit the target hard, transfer energy, shred into pieces that are VERY difficult to get an ID out of, and not punch a hole through the bad guy, two walls, and the neighbor's sleeping kid. It will still easily make it through any clothing that isn't armor, through a car window, a car door, drywall, even a single layer of cinder black.
Underwood packs their rounds pretty hot. I would not recommend putting such hot rounds through anything outside of an HK. Most .40 pistols are not actually designed to handle the .40 s&w cartidge, they basically built to handle 9mm then beefed up a little. The HK USP was built from the ground up around that round, and the differences are obvious when you use one.
Not most .40 pistols, but some need beefing up to handle good .40 loading (e.g. Underwood). I added a stainless steel 22lb spring/recoil guide to my 3.2" barrel Walther PPS . 40 (it came standard with a weaker18lb spring). This helps with felt recoil and muzzle flip and beefs up the gun to handle the higher pressure .40's.
Winchester Whitebox 180 grain loads really snort.
40 yes yes yes ❤
155gr is the sweet spot for 40sw
First Gel Test little 🕷 Spider under the Table, "WTH, what was that?!!"..😅

Underwood 155 xtp is possibly the most energy, weaker slower 180 is most likely more effective overall.
Underwood for the win...😀
Can’t go wrong with Underwood ammo. And it’s not extremely expensive either.
That 135 gr looks like a good watermelon round lol
EXACTLY! LOL!
A Corbon 135 gr .40 at 1,300 FPS is listed as 96% one shot, at 9.8" penetration in gel. I think that 155 to 165 gr is more ideal overall, but if you made a good shot front on with the 135 gr I think that's it.
That 135gr shocked me when the gel did a flip. I did not expect it at all
I have shot more melons than any in history, the Underwood extrem defender 115 will produce the best show of any 40 round, lots of melon blasting videos on my channel. That Nosler sporting bullet is a hunting round ,cup and core made of pure lead meant to expand at longer distance not point blank, the xtp could be used for hunting or pd.
@@GunSam 135 gr Corbon JHP has been the round of choice in a USP40 for getting close to 27 years. Can't always find it though. Buy it all up when I do. Found the 180 gr rounds would penetrate too much, so the mid-range 150 gr and 165 gr were fine. Got Gold Dots, HSTs, Winchester Rangers, Hornady Critical Defense and Dutys, and they all work too. All depends on what you can find. Used to carry some Corbon 90 gr JHPs in subcompact 9mm guns like a P2000sk, or VP9sk, to keep the velocity up in a shorter barrel. But Corbon was always the go to company. Powerball and DPX rounds also work well, but are more expensive and are harder to find.
1263 not bad at all.
Then.. 1350s 😮
Try civil defense 40cal 60 grain at 2000fps.
