    Lyrics:
We listen to the tales and romanticize,
How we'd follow the path of the hero.
Boast about the day when the rivers overrun.
How we rise to the height of our halo.
Listen to the tales as we all rationalize
Our way into the arms of the savior,
    Feigning all the trials and the tribulations;
None of us have actually been there,
    Not like you...
    Ignorant siblings in the congregation
    Gather around spewing sympathy,
    Spare me.
None of them can even hold a candle up to you.
Blinded by choice, these hypocrites won't see.
But enough about the collective Judas.
Who could deny you were the one who illuminated your little piece of the divine?
    And this little light of mine, a gift you passed on to me;
I'm gonna let it shine to guide you safely on your way,
    Your way home ...
Oh, what are they going to do when the lights go down,
Without you to guide them all to Zion?
What are they going to do when the rivers overrun,
    Other than tremble incessantly?
High is the way, but our eyes are upon the ground.
You were the light and the way they'll only read about.
I only pray Heaven knows when to lift you out.
    Ten thousand days in the fire is long enough;
    You're going home.
You're the only one who can hold your head up high,
Shake your fists at the gates saying:
    "I have come home now!
Fetch me the spirit, the son, and the father.
Tell them their pillar of faith has ascended.
    It's time now!
    My time now!
Give me my, give me my wings!"
    Give me my...
    Give me my...
    Give me my!
    Give me my!
    Give me my!
    Give me my!
    Give me my!
    Give me my wings!
You are the light and way that they will only read about.
Set as I am in my ways and my arrogance,
Burden of proof tossed upon the believers.
You were my witness, my eyes, my evidence,
    Judith Marie, unconditional one.
    Daylight dims leaving cold fluorescents.
Difficult to see you in this light.
Please forgive this bold suggestion, but,
Should you see your Maker's face tonight,
Look Him in the eye, look Him in the eye, and tell Him:
"I never lived a lie, never took a life, but surely saved one.
Hallelujah, it's time for you to bring me home.

All that matters is how I’ve lived…
I have lived for you.. for me… for every soul…
Tool put me on a journey through life of selflessness….
For 16 years I’ve lived every day, sometimes my own life, sometimes vicariously through others….

I don't really listen to this song for the lyrics but for the way Maynard sings them. Crooning, mumbling, accusing, demanding, declaring, comforting, assuring. It's a personal send-up to his mother. His contempt for religion is still present, but he plays it as an appeal for his mother. “If God exists then she is more deserving of heaven than any of us.” Even if you don't know the backstory, you know there is something he is putting his whole self into--it's important to him, and so as a listener it becomes important to me.

You mention the different tones & variations Maynard projects seems to correlate to the “grieving process”

English isnt my native language. I read about the story behind the song. And I always thought it was some kind of blaming "god" or the believe in it (since tool is known as an atheistic group and Maynard anti god opinion comes from the fact that his mother was hard religious, even when she suffered in the life on earth) but when I read your comment I looked far more into the lyrics. And the song is a homage to his mother clearly. And it shows that he doesn't have to believe in the same things as his mother, to accept and love and miss her.

My mum passed away January 31 this year. I’m 27 and I just realized that I had just barely over 10, 000 days with her. (10, 064 to be exact.)
The last lines in this song hit hard. They’ve always been haunting to me but now even more so obviously.
She was a big Tool fan, specifically of this album. Her name is even incredibly close to Marie.
    Love you mum.

You may know this song was written by James Maynard for his deceased mother, Judith Marie, but you may not know that she spent a little over 27 years on her sickbed. Ten thousand days is a little over 27 years, which is how long she was "in the fire" before she passed on; before finally "going home."

My husband passed away yesterday in hospice, he was 32. I played him this song before he received the Sacrament of the Sick from the Chaplain there the day before he passed.
This song was really fitting because he had anoxic brain injury and multiple organ failure and fought for his consciousness and body for 40+ days in the ICU. Not exactly a stroke like Maynard's mom, but I believe this song brought us both peace.

When Maynard sings “daylight dims leaving cold fluorescence; difficult to see you in this light” I immediately picture him in the hospital room as his mother is taking her last breaths. I imagine he is holding her hand and speaking to her; suggesting what she might say when she gets to the gates of heaven. Incredibly touching and unbelievably heart wrenching.

Back in ‘06 I was driving from Salt Lake back to Bozeman and was listening to this entire song and I can almost for certain tell you that I must have had a very similar experience to Maynard. It was around 5 and All I could see was the lyric
      “Daylight dims leaving cold fluorescence’
It’s EXACTLY what I was experiencing I actually pulled off the highway drove up some hill and literally watched this ‘daylight dimming’ I was so moved by the situation that I’ve never forgotten it.
But for sure the way northern Utah is with all those factories and the toxic smoke literally does something to that light in the winter evening sunset..
It’s where I believe part of the lyrics come from

My grandfather is currently, at this moment, under 24/7 hospice care.. his health has been declining pretty much this whole entire year.. he'd been in and out of hospitals and physical rehab centers for the past 2 months.. we finally got him home, he was awake, bedridden, but awake and alert for only about 5 days.. He's been asleep for the past two days, and the rattle in his breathing is the worst I've heard it yet.. the skies are even weeping, his siblings are here gathered around him as he lays there, almost unable to wake up... and I'm outside smoking a cigarette trying to remain calm, crying and shaking, listening to this masterpiece once again and typing this out.
Be there for your loved ones is all I can say, even before they become unconscious.. I was there for him as his health deteriorated right before my eyes, helping him back to his feet each time he fell and couldn't get up. Even when he knew his time was nearing an end, he still was his calm, jovial self.. joking, laughing.. I love him, Walter, paw-paw.. even if you can't read this right now.. Just know my heart breaks for you.. I'm glad you got to physically come home, whenever you feel it is ready.. spiritually, you may go home as well.. I love you, you were my rock.. you helped me become a better man, unlike my actual father who would scream and yell at me over not being able to sweep the floor "correctly" as a 4 year old.. your calm demeanor is what i try to emulate, mimic even, be safe on your journey..

Yea its just one guy's interpretation but this whole song felt to me almost like an apology to his mom and perhaps even to God for the bitterness he held for so many years... for making songs like Judith with Perfect Circle. I won't even listen to that song. Its too dark and too violent for me. So much hate poured out in that one.
Thats way wings 1 & 2 are literally my fav Tool songs ever. And they've been my favorite band hands down since 1993 when I was like 15. I've struggled for years with how amazing their music is and at the same time knowing that a lot of their stuff has roots in "belive in nothing"... that sort of thing. A lot of the stuff from Lateralus forward shows a lot of intellectual and spiritual growth. Especially songs like this one. Helps me rationalize it I guess. Again though... just one guy's interpretation.
      Keep on rocking! 🤙🤙

@@richheustis5930 Good interpretation. I'm glad he put his thoughts out there, whatever they were. Judith is a hard song to hear but I understand his anger. The fact that she didn't waver despite the what happened to her is a testament. And Maynard went through his own trials of abuse. It's understandable.

Listen to the tales and romanticize
How we follow the path of the hero
Boast about the day when the rivers overrun
How we rise to the height of our halo
Listen to the tales as we all rationalize
Our way into the arms of the savior
Fading all the trials and the tribulations
None of us have actually been there
    Not like you
    Ignorant fibbers in the congregation
    Gather around spewing sympathy
    Spare me
None of them can even hold a candle up to you
Blinded by choices hypocrites won't see
But enough about the collective Judas
Who could deny you were the one who illuminated
Your little piece of the divine
    This little light of mine
The gift you passed onto me
    I'll let it shine
To guide you safely on your way
    Your way home
What are they going to do when the lights go down?
Without you to guide them all to Zion?
What are they going to do when the rivers overrun?
    Other than tremble incessantly
High is the way, but our eyes are upon the ground
You were the light and the way that they'll only read about
I only pray Heaven knows when to lift you out
Ten thousand days in the fire is long enough
    You're going home
You're the only one who can hold your head up high
Shake your fist at the gates saying
    I have come home now
    Fetch me the spirit
    The son, and the father
Tell them their pillar of faith has ascended
It's time now, my time now
Give me my, give me my, wings
    Give me my
    Give me my
    Give me my
    Give me my
    Give me my wings
You are the light, a way
That they will only read about
Set as I am in my ways and my arrogance
Burden of proof tossed upon non-believers
    You were my witness
    My eyes, my evidence
    Judith Marie, unconditional one
    Daylight dims leaving cold fluorescence
Difficult to see you in this light
    Please forgive this bold suggestion
Should you see your maker's face tonight
    Look him in the eye
Look him in the eye, and tell him
I never lived a lie, never took a life
    But surely saved one, hallelujah
It's time for you to bring me home
