    Many years ago I got a few Seiko 5's and one of them was the dark dial version in this video. I changed the bracelet to a leather strap after a day and it looked much better for it in my humble opinion. Now although timekeeping was definitely not to SOSC standards it was well within a minute a day. Unfortunately like all my 5 series hand alignment was out of whack but given I paid about £60 all those years ago I let it slide. I still love the look of the watch and it still gets wrist time. If you can get one at a decent price and are OK with the likelihood that the hands may not align correctly I'd give it some serious consideration. Thanks for sharing.

    You mention the jingly jangly bracelet as a negative…. I have two of these old seiko 5s, and absolutely LOVE that about these watches. I’m a kid of the 70s/80s and that’s how ALL metal bracelets were so the sound and feel gives me a wonderful feeling of nostalgia. Love the content!

    Ive always loved the original Seiko 5 and had a few and have one at the moment. For the prices you used to get them for they did everything you wanted. Sadly a lot of people just point out its "faults", the movement, no sapphire, the WR, the bracelet etc. But none ultimately should stop you from buying and enjoying these

    I bought my first Seiko 5 about 16 years ago, I think it cost me about 40 quid. Still works and still looks good. The only thing I'd say is, I have the opposite problem to you, with my massive hands and wrists it looks a little bit smaller than I'd like. I guess we'd both agree that "normal" or mid size wrists would make it easier for choosing watches.

    The silver one looks good but in many non-studio lighting conditions the 79 has a really aggressive sunburst which obscures or mimics the hands. It is often surprisingly hard to read. Also, briefly mentioned by MWC, the caseback is massively thick and the watch fails to hug the wrist. The SNKL45 is a much better bet in my opinion.

    Nice review, but Dude! CNS Watchbands, Molequin, Delugs, and finally Watchgecko around the corner from you in the UK all have vast collections of 19mm straps. The time when you couldn't get a 21 or 19 mil strap is long gone.
    If you get a Painswick in distressed brown, a vintage brown Clanville in chromeexcel leather, and a vintage red or vintage brown Radstock from Watchgecko, those will make that watch look like a million bucks. Pick up two NATO straps, a black and an olive, and you've got combinations to work with for all occasions.
    Very versatile watches. More so than my current Grand Seiko. :)

    I love the "dial time" gimmick, just funny cool way to make a video. 10ATM and 4R36 would be nice to see. When they do update their old models, then do it as improvement, not as step back. Non the less we would buy it anyway. Succers being drawn by that beautiful sunburst dial and Seiko 5 emblem. I enjoy your videos.

  • @skodovkar
    @skodovkar Před 10 měsíci +3

    I own the black one. Dial oscillates between boring and magnificent depending on light, it can seem totally flat on many occasions. 19 mm strap size is not great, clasp is terrible and locks only by flexibility of the material. It slowly bends and you need to bend it back to have a strong lock. Adjustment of bracelet is super unfriendly, you need to push out interlink(s) that hold like glued. However I like outer surface of the bracelet even though it does not match case of watch.
    For some reason my front crystal bezel is not fitted properly and is slightly raised on one side. Lume is great. My movement was originally very precise but even though I did not wear it very much it seems to lose about 30s per day after 2 years 😞 If you work on PC and do not have much wrist movement you can be badly surprised in the morning with stopped watch.
    Not bad for having fun, but I would buy something I can hand wind and hack and what does not levitate above my wrist.

    • @ZviJ1
      @ZviJ1 Před 5 měsíci

      It's funny how some people don't get the point about a self winding watch that can't be manually wound, but proceed to use one anyway: you must wear it at least 8 hours every day so that it will have enough power not to stop on you all of a sudden.
      The rule with the 7S26 movement is that the watch's precision improves the more you wear it throughout your day.
      Another important rule is that the movement gradually loses precision the more the watch comes in proximity to magnetic fields. This problem can be overcome easily, without shelling out much money, by buying a demagnetizer and using it on your watch with some frequency.
      If you lead a sedentary life or have a "desk jockey" routine and don't wear the watch at least 8 hours per day, why were you surprised when it stopped in the morning? You hadn't been supplying it with sufficient power. This is not the watch's fault.

      Now that I see you' wrote this, I'd love if Seiko resumed this line of entry level watches alongside their present Seiko 5 sports line, though featuring the same improved water resistance and similar newer movement that can be manually wound and hacked, like the latter. I've owned these and half a dozen other classic Seiko 5s over the years. They're beautiful watches that collectors like us would love, but if someone coming into the hobby today had $100 to buy a watch, I'd steer them towards a Chinese brand instead. Those come with better bracelets, sapphire crystals, and even better Seiko movements inside. Great show as always!

      Yeah I also think that NH35 is way better movement than the one which comes with this watch.

      While true and the fact that Chinese brands on aliexpress such as Pagani that produce a large range of Seiko homages, the branding does give me a tickle.

      @@BenitoCarmela I don’t mind the 7S26 movement if it’s going to be a watch I wear daily. But I constantly rotate watches. Doing the ‘Seiko shuffle’ and setting the time with the tiny crown got tiring really fast.

      @@prettysoIdier completely agree, very few of them get that right. My favourite is probably Baltany, clean logo and a brand name that doesn’t sound like a word salad.

    I have both old and new Seiko 5s in my collection. For me, the updated bracelet and caliber, improved crown and water resistance, as well as the more complexe finishing totally justify the price increase of the new Seiko 5 line (especially for the srpe "dress-KX"). Yes the old snxs/snkl are charming watches but there are really not up to today's standards if we are being honest.

      Thank you for replying to me! As always, I enjoyed your video and style of review. 😊
      Indeed, the plethora of choice from old Seiko 5 line will remain unmatched! I wonder if in today's context it would be possible for Seiko to propose such a variety of style/case/dials? 🤔

    If you have 30 to 40 watches with Hardlex crystals, it just means that you never really wear one, or each of them only gets used very little. So it doesn't mean anything.

      Starting to get bored of the generic white boxes they do.
      They should do different boxes for the different models they do. Or at least do it differently for the prospex and presage ranges.
      Lol, you can create a new character that looks at watch boxes, similar to what Mr Pagani does with the case backs.
