Florida Man Driving Stolen Box Truck Leads Deputies on a Wild Chase

Gainesville, Florida - On August 23, 2022 Tampa Police responded to the report of a carjacking in the 16000 block of Enclave Village Dr. Victim #1 was confronted by an armed subject as she entered her car while preparing to leave for work. The suspect, later identified as 33-year-old Brandon J Baker, demanded she exit the car, then fled the scene in the victim’s black Nissan Maxima. The victim was not injured. Minutes later, officers responded to a 911 call in the 6200 block of Ashbury Palms Dr. Reportedly, Baker forcibly entered a residence after committing the carjacking, and confronted victim #2, who is a known acquaintance. Baker forced the victim out of the residence and into the Maxima. The victim was able to escape, at which time Baker fled the scene prior to police arrival. The Maxima was found abandoned at Tampa Palms Blvd. and Compton Dr. The victim was not injured. Approximately an hour later, Tampa Police responded to the report of a stolen vehicle that had just occurred in the 18000 block of Highwoods Preserve Pkwy.
Victim #3 was in the back of his white Isuzu box truck. When he exited the rear of the truck, he observed Baker in the driver seat. Baker then fled in the truck, which was equipped with GPS. The truck’s location was determined, and the Florida Highway Patrol attempted a traffic stop entering Alachua County. Baker refused to stop and began driving north in the southbound lanes of I-75. At multiple points the Alachua County Sheriff’s Office attempted to stop the vehicle without success. Baker struck multiple law enforcement vehicles. Baker attempted to flee on foot but was taken into custody by members of FHP & Alachua County Sheriff’s Office. Two Alachua County Deputies sustained minor injuries. No Florida Highway Patrol Troopers were injured. Baker is currently in Alachua County Jail, charged with Armed Carjacking, Burglary with Battery, Kidnapping, and Grand Theft Auto related to the incidents that occurred in Tampa, as well as multiple felony charges related to the incidents that occurred in Alachua County.

Thanks! I work for the sheriff's office in their media department (a super cool job!). It's always scary when something like this happens. We don't want to see chases like this go down, but when they unfortunately do, it's a lot of fun for me as an editor. Haha

I feel really really bad for those two or three vehicles that got hit that had nothing to do with this. I hope they are compensated in some way because man just imagine walking into a bestbuy after parking your car, walking out of the store only to find your car half smashed. I know a guy who works with the owner of the car. After the sheriff's office originally posted this on their page yesterday, I sent it to him. Hopefully it helps with the insurance company to have video proof.

What a bizarre world we live in. This man endangered hundreds if not thousands of people’s lives within the span of a few minutes. Families. Children. But he also has the presence of mind to understand the perspective of the people who volunteered to stop criminals like him.
Like it’s all a game.
As opposed to the reality of the people who could have died in any one of a hundred or so head-on collisions with a box truck, leaving their families to pick up the pieces.
That's exactly why everyone who runs like this should be executed on the spot when they are caught. The world would be a brighter, better place for it.

Yeah that's what I did too when I led them on a chase. True story but it was short-lived and was on accident. I thought the cop Super Troopered me and went around me as I looked to pull over. I waited for like 3min and nothing from the officer and no lights. Their cars are all black and there were no street lights. Had to explain that I'm not a career criminal 😂

Vehicles probably totaled, lot's of cars damaged. Don't know why they just didn't back off because someone could have easily been killed. How hard would it have been to keep an eye on a box truck? Police are now going to have to pay for all those damaged vehicles. Insurance companies will go after them.
I was on 75 North heading to Gainesville from Ocala that morning. I was wondering what the heck was going on because a TON of cops were responding to this. It was nuts.

I’m sure the acceleration and precise handling capabilities of a box truck was exactly what he needed to elude the police.
Is the opposite of what he needed to elude, but it is exactly what he needed to smash stuff. Box truck got a big torque engine for moving around a loaded box. This type of engine is hard to stop from plowing through cars.

Yeah no it shouldn't. Fleeing suspects that are not presently endangering someone, ie him bailing from the car and now on foot, should not be struck by a vehicle. That is deadly force. I think the vehicle that struck him did it on accident since he magically appeared after the box truck rolled away, but this should not be the norm and in fact has seen officers arrested and sued for such an act. It is a violation of 4th amendment rights.
Cops probably aren't mad at him either, but the Public damn well should be.

Fleeing police in a car in itself is a borderline misdemeanor/felony. Since this flight in itself ranks so low in terms of jail time, and the rocks-off pleasure and celebrity prestige for da Thug is so high, expect these actions to continue unabated.
