Great reaction. Lemmy Kilmister of Motorhead wrote "1916" after watching a documentary on the Battle of the Somme. He was particularly moved by an interview with a survivor of the battle who told of holding his best friend as he died. This is a moving tribute to not only Lemmy, but to all the soldiers throughout history who marched off to fight, and often die, for their homeland. RIP, you are missed, and appreciated.

I was one of the lead Make-up Artists on this video and I’ve got to say, it is the most powerful job I’ve ever worked on. Even now, it still brings a tear to my eye when I hear it and I love watching all of the reaction videos.
It was about the Battle of Somme and so much care and dedication went into the planning of this to ensure that we all did it justice for the Soldiers who lost their lives during those fateful hours. The band are amazing in everything that they do, but especially getting the message across to educate the world of tragic times of wars gone by. The song was originally written by Lemmy Kilmister of Motörhead and the video features Mikkey Dee and Phil Campbell from the band.
Just like the Christmas Truce this Video are a milestone in the history of music videos. Be proud to be a part of that! ❤

This is a cover of a Motörhead song. The two guys standing in the door opening at 6:18 are Mikkey Dee and Phil Campbell, the drummer and the guitarist of Motörhead. The picture is of Lemmy Kilmister, the bassist and singer of Motörhead and the guy holding it is Eddie rocha who was the tour manager of Motörhead and the current one for Sabaton.
All the named soldiers in the credits were real soldiers, both for WWI and WWII but also individuals like Leonidas, and Robert the Bruce.
The soldier pulling himself out of the mud, at first I thought he was a member of "The Smoking Snakes" (Força Expedicionária Brasileira, FEB, nicknamed Cobras Fumantes), but doing some more research with the patch on his shoulder as well as his helmet, that's Sgt Henry Johnson of the 15th New York National Guard Regiment, aka "The Harlem Hellfighters". Medal of Honor recipient and recipient of French Croix de Guerre avec Palme, France's highest award for valor. The Medal of Honor was awarded to him in 2015.
Sgt. Henry Johnson is "one of the five bravest American soldiers in the war."

The Asian soldier with the cocked-hat, that's a Nepalese Gurka named Havildar Gurung (per the credits) who earn the Victoria Cross in the Burma campaign off WWII.
Sgt Awal Nur, who did a secret mission over the Himalaya, Lt. Audie Murphy, Sgt. Alvin York, both Medal of Honor recipients, just to name a few.
I also notice a soldier with the Croix Lorraine on what looks like a French flag arm band, meaning he was a member of the 'Forces françaises libres' forces in WWII.
Doing some reading I found out that a large number of French colonial troops from territories such as Chad had joined with the 'Forces françaises libres'. I suspect that soldier is Lt Comba, but I can't find anything on him.
As I've been working my way through the names listed in the credits and found another one: Private George Stringer, Manchester, Awarded the Victoria Cross at the Battle of Es Sinn in Mesopotamia.

Tommy Johansson,the guitarist, is as others have said well worth exploring on his own.
You saw him marching to Joakims left side, almost a head taller, longhaired. He is also the one who arranged this Motörhead song to fit Sabaton.
You saw the remaining Motörhead members and their your manager, nowadays tour manager for Sabaton marching with a picture of Lemmy Kilminster, the songwriter.

The youngest authenticated British soldier in World War I was twelve-year-old Sidney Lewis, who fought at the Battle of the Somme in 1916. Lewis' claim was not authenticated until 2013.
My birthday is on the 1st of July and as a kid I was obsessed with the Great War so The battle of the Somme is something very close to my heart, even if I'm neither German or British.

Saw your first reaction to Sabaton and you said that youre intrested in other languages. Then i suggest you watch Sabataon - En Livstid i krig Live from Gothenburg. That is a really cool video and a really good song in Swedish with Sabaton. Dont forget the captions doe!
This emotional song most definitely resonates with many of us. Our great grandfathers fought during WW1. Personally, both of my great grandfathers fought at the Somme. Unfortunately, one of them died and the other was wounded, losing his left eye. He was with the Manchester Regiment, one of the few regiments that faced heavy casualties. I know that my great grandfather James was originally with a cavalry regiment, but for some reason, he ended up with the Manchester boys. He was from Lancashire, specifically a town called Accrington, which had its own regiment called the Accrington Pals. Throughout the town, there are manorial artworks and actual photos of the whole regiment together, dating back to 1914-1915. As for me, I served as a crewman in the Royal Tank Regiment with the Challenger 2. Our emblem is the big Willie, one of the first main battle tanks produced during WW1. And of course, our motto is 'Fear Naught.' Regardless of how many times I hear the song, it always evokes strong emotions in me.
History teachers should play their music to students, they would be much more interested in history. I just love Sabaton, they make great music and adhere to historic facts.

Oh and the one on the guitar is Tommy Johansson .. he also a plays keyboard, bass and drums .. and sings . He actually are a sort of hidden talent in Sabaton. He has his own band Majestica ( if you want to check do “above the sky” ) AND does covers on his YT channel. First suggestion for the covers (if you decide to check those out) usually are “she’s gone by steelheart but you pick a genre and song you like if you don”t like that one he has a wide array to choose from ☀️
Sabaton really made a steal when they picked him up Tommy is a fantastic performer.
Sabaton fans can link all the 'appearances' as 'Easter eggs' back to many other songs they do. Guitarist is Tommy Johansson, one of the two Lead guitarists with the band. Tommy is also the higher voice you hear harmonizing with Joakim. This was the battle of the Somme. Christmas Truce is a good one, a true story too.
After I learned this was a Motorhead cover, I was shocked and jawdropping impressed that Lemmy could write such a profoundly deep song. To me, the song is more of a poem adapted with music. It's bloody brilliant and if there was ever a band that could bring it to a higher level, it's Sabaton. Lemmy would've gave them mad props for this.

A great Sabaton experience is 'En livstid i krig ' live from Gothenburg. It's in Swedish, Sabaton's mother tongue. There are English subtitles.
That line up is essentially soldiers from throughout the ages humanity fought wars. Not all of them just the songs created by sabaton
I love your reaction! If you get a chance, visit some of these WWI battlefields in northern France. Today, the battlefields are covered with crops, but along the roadways are thousands and thousands of the orange poppies, as if to remind all of us of all the soldiers who suffered and died. I saw the Australian war memorials. I didn't even know that Aussie soldiers fought in WWI, but as part of the British Empire, they did. You might also listen to The Red Baron, and also see the Sabaton History Channel's episode. Interesting that though the Red Baron was the enemy, a German pilot, he showed some courtesy to his foes, to the point that when he was shot down and died near the Somme River, he received a respectful burial, and the Aussie soldiers gave him a gun salute.
That was Tommy Johansson on the guitar, by the way, since you asked. Incredibly talented, not only with the guitar but also with vocals. He's got his own channel on youtube you should absolutely check out, even if you don't end up doing any reactions for it (as well as another band of his own, Majestica, where he does the vocals).
I can also personally confirm he's an absolutely wonderful person to interact with, since I had the pleasure of meeting him (as well as Chris Rörland and Hannes Van Dahl) after a show. All three of them were incredibly friendly and accommodating, and I'll remember standing around behind the venue shooting the shit with those guys until the day I die. They were just that genuine and personable. One of these days I'll get to meet Par and Joakim, but it's not like I've got any complaints as it is.

My 21 yr old said he’s learned more from Sabaton than he ever did in all his years in school…. Sad.. No Bullits fly was the mother you were talking about. There’s a book that tells the whole story. Bismarck is a great song, any of their songs are great, they are from Sweden but they research all history. 82nd all the way, Hell and back etc..

Causalities doesn`t mean killed. It counts all injured men who had to be send back for medical treatment(~70% of those would return after around 2 weeks), disable people and of course the killed. Sometimes even deseurters are included. The ratio is different for each battle, but I have heard you can roughly assume 3 injured, 1 disabled/critical injured, and 1 killed out of 5 causalities.
But this is a common mistake, done by many articels and even some books.
Literature sums it up the best.

Lieing about your age to go to war was common back then. My grandfather did it in WW2 to go fight in france. Back in the day people viewed war as "an adventure" and with the fact ww1 was what we know today as the last war of the monarchs many of those young boys thought they were going to be heroes of the empire.

Casualty means both dead and injured soldiers. So 1 million casualties, of which, 300.000 were killed in action. So 700.000 men were wounded, captured as POWs, or taken out of battle in a different way. (those numbers included losses and such from both sides)
I love this song so much, no matter how many times I hear it I turn into a blubbering wreck. Haunting, visceral, brutal, and absolutely beautiful in its unashamed reality check.
The song is meant to teach through the lyrics. The end of this one is ment to give respect for all the soldiers through history.

300k dead for 6miles of land is 7.5in per man, if you use the total casualties numbers for both sides at the Somme it drops to juet over 2in

Sabaton also has an award winning history channel that gives background to over 100 if their songs (not music award, academic, aimed at education of the public).

For anyone interested in learning more about this subject I would suggest the documentary “We shall not grow old” by Peter Jackson it’s about the British soldiers of ww1. It was so powerful that every school in Britain was given a copy and students given the opportunity To watch it.

Yet we have "Onward Christian Soldiers", written in the 19th century CE. Man has used religion as an excuse for some of the bloodiest wars ever fought for as long as there have been wars.
You might want to look up how many wars and murders that was in the name of god despite that.
To give you an idea of the scale of the casualties, 165 men died over the course of this reaction.

While a great cover, I would definitely recommend you listening to the original version by Mötorhead, it's much more stripped back and Lemmy's vocals fit the song even better. I strongly recommend you listen to the original.
2 years to our ages... That's funny no no it is not those. kids died they all did in a battle they had no idea what "modern" was, was going to be. Ww1 was nasty at the start as that kind of war was a first, they had no armour to back then up till 5 years later when tanks were invented for this very war.
