- Earlier this month a Somali man was captured while fighting for Russia in Ukraine.
Now being held as a POW by Ukraine, Bashiir* told Kyiv Post in an interview how he claims he ended up on the front lines.

Thank you. I thought about his English the whole time I was watching the video... I've lived in London most of my life, sometimes teaching English to refugees from different parts of the world, and when I was younger I lived in a hostel with many young refugees from different East African countries. Obviously people have different levels of education and many Somalis do speak very good English, but something about the way he speaks doesn't quite ring true, even to my European ear. Have you thought of emailing the channel directly to let them know?

As a person with a Somali background I believe the guy is not a Somalian. His english accent is more of a Kenyan or Ethiopian than a Somali. His answers and tone do not correspond to that of a typical Somali unless he spent a considerable time in Europe. Somalis are talkative and do not usually give short responses. I am interested in interviewing myself this guy if I would get the opportunity.

The EU has similar programs. Much is done, but as with everything, there are limits. There are more funds and programs than we can keep track of. If citizens aren’t willing to make their own improvements, why should those who have attempted to help, get blamed? We all have to be the change we want to see in this world.
As a Somali, this is very suspicious. The way he pronounces certain words are not how you’d expect a Somali to pronounce them. He probably Ethiopian, or a Somali who grew up in Ethiopia.

Kyivpost knows his face has been shown on the internet already, but, as a mainstream media organization, they are following the rules. It's a legal and ethical issue, so it is prudent for them to do so.

I also think that your interviewer should have asked him more about how he heard of fighting for Russia, how he travelled and who paid for it.
It is possible that he had contacts with Wagner, or that there are Russians, actively recruiting in Africa.

Russia is now actively recruiting people from developing nations around the world. Those people are being used to cause problems at the border with Finland for example and if that doesn't work the Russian army has a job available and they always promise it will not include front line fighting to get people to sign the contract.

I was in contact with Somali people before, calculated and well thought people. This guy aims at getting Russian citizenship for the long term goal. Being a Russian soldier he receives $2,000 US per month as salary under contract term to help his family for the shorter goal. He will bring his family to Russia later if he survives the war. A Somali speaking English at this level is not dumb enough to sign a contract without knowing the clauses in it.

Sounds like none of you know much about Africa or how foreign recruitment works. People get flown into countries: Japan, Dubai, Russia etc and the group paying take their passports then they have to earn them back. That might be doing stripping, sex work, drug muling, etc but even modelling agencies work like this: put you up in an apartment and charge you a management fee which you have to pay off. No, forcing a captured soldier to make statements is a breach.
If a soldier choses to speak to the media witgout duress, then its not a breech.
A pow is free to refuse repatriation to their side, so he might attempt to return to somalia, but im sure as he is dumb enough to return to russia, expecting pay, he will then get thrown in jail because he spoke to the media.

What is Ukraine supposed to do with him and others like him? Its very unlikely that Russia will want to exchange Ukrainian POW’s for him, its also unlikely that the Somali government will do anything to try to get him back.

Legally, if the guy was enlisted into the russian army, he is not a 'mercenary'. In the same legal sense, the foreign volunteers fighting for Ukraine are enlisted into Ukraine's armed forces and are definitely not mercenaries.

How could someone supporting a wife and child on $100/month afford to travel to Russia just to wander around some random Russian cities? His whole story smells fishy. He wasn't wandering around, he didn't happen to see a Russian recruitment poster and though, "I could be a chef!"
He knew very well that he was going to war to kill innocent people - and he didn't care. *His explanation is not coherent, because just guarding buildings hardly requires the army - and certainly not the training as a soldier that he mentions.* *Because he is a mercenary and not a POW, it would be nothing but right for him to help rebuild Ukraine (clearing mines, building roads and houses, etc.) for 20 years as a punishment, for example, and receive a salary that will benefit his family.* If he behaves decently for 3 years, there could even be improvements, e.g. his family could be allowed to visit him.
Ukraine can't afford to pay him. Also if he was freed he might betray them.
