- For this A Song of Ice & Fire battle report, we feature a match from a recent tournament played at The Forge, in Houston, Texas. The game mode being played is Dance With Dragons. Just wanted to say I really like your short head cannon prompts at the beginning of each batrep :) I always try to play armies that have a theme to them so I like the story telling aspect. Nice little touch ☺️
Thanks! I like to give a little context to each game, even if that context doesn’t make much sense canonically. I find it fun to come up with a reason for some of these matchups to happen.

Great list. I'm looking forward to running something similar when Targ Heroes 3 finally drop in the UK. My Targs have been on the shelf for a few months now but I'm really looking forward to running them again.
It’s a super fun list, as long you can keep the dragon up. Marselen thankfully has the tools to help in this regard. He opens up some fresh listbuilding options for Targs. Here’s hoping you get Targ Heroes 3 in the UK soon!
Thank you for posting this BR, I really enjoyed it. One small tip, both players are supposed to draw their initial hands before deciding who will go first. This is on page 27 under the "Beginning the Game" section. Looking forward to more of your battle reports.

Nice game, I hadn’t given much thought to Marselen before but this is a great list for him. I’d certainly try it, though I think you’d have better luck finding a real dragon than a Mother Of Dragons box lol.
MoD is definitely hard to find these days. Fortunately I had picked up my copy long ago. Unless you’re in an official tournament, you should be perfectly fine proxying a dragon model using a solo tray for casual play.
Your opponent snuck a cheeky 1 pt attachment into that guardsman unit for the intimidating presence! Good bat rep though. Seeing targ heroes 3 having a decent impact is good!
You caught that! Good eye. I think my opponent accidentally used his Guardsmen unit from his second tournament list in this army. The Guardsmen unit from this tournament list was not supposed to have the Assault Veteran in it. I didn’t notice until I was editing the video, but it didn’t end up being a consequential error.
Where does your shop get their mats? They are beautiful! And are they neoprene, or vinyl?
Most of the mats I play on are my own. There are three mats that were from the ASOIAF Kickstarter, but can occasionally be found at some online game stores that still have stock, but they’re getting harder to find for a reasonable price. If the mat in this video is the desert looking one, it’s a F.A.T Mat that I picked up at my local store. I think it’s from tablewar.com, and they make a variety of patterns in 4’x4’.
Would be nice to see the miniatures
I usually *intend* to take some pics of the miniatures pre or post-game, but often I end up forgetting or, as in the case of this game, it was a tournament setting and I was scrambling just to get the audio and video equipment set up in time so as not to waste any play time in the round. Although there aren’t any good pics of my opponent’s army, if you watch future videos of my Targ army, you’ll see some up close pictures either pre or post game. Highlight of the video was when the unwashed peasantry slapped Jamie's unit for 8 wounds in one attack 😂
Also in the 2nd or 3rd round had the Lannister player used his ncu to claim the horse and retreated his engaged, still activated crossbows from Marselens blackguard, and then turned to face the dragon to provide covering fire for his commander unit, he might of had a chance at taking it down. It's easy to miss things like that in the heat of the moment but it was still fun seeing drogon feast like the heathen kings of old on Lannister flesh.
Freedmen can hit a lot harder than folks expect, especially if punching a flank or rear. I got pretty lucky on the dice rolls for that Freedmen charge though.
Doing whatever it takes to shoot down the dragon always needs to be a priority for an opponent when they’re facing a dragon list. Left alone, dragons will cause absolute havoc.
Easy to read the outcome of this match-up from the very start. It didn't help that the Lannister player's dice rolling in the first two game turns were horrible. Skipped to the end to see how badly he lost. Seeing Flayed Men in nearly every bat rep for the last couple of years is honestly getting old and to me boring as hell to watch. Targaryen's have some really solid units that could of been used to fill that role however this being a tournament and all it's not surprising to see them on the table. Using the dragon for the moral tests to make use of war cry seems a little dishonest but oh well, that's just the way the game has evolved. In tournaments making use of every advantage within the rules is the standard and expected. At least there was good sportsmanship on display from both players during the turns that I watched.
What Targaryen unit do you see that fill the same role as Flayed Men? I fail to see any heavy cavalry in the same caliber, unless you take Drogo and Bloodriders, which you obviously cant with Marselen commander.
How does it seem dishonest to make use of warcry?
And what other solid units do you see fulfilling the role of FM? Targs don't have many solid units that can fill needed roles that also work in conjunction with their deck. It's part of the reason they are the bottom ranked army right now (discounted neutrals, which don't really count).
I don’t think that using a unit that synergizes well with a given tactics card is “dishonest”, especially considering the development team certainly exhaustively playtested all new units and cards. On the Flayed Men issue, there are not a lot of other options available to Targs to fill the role I needed the FM for. The closest alternative would have been Screamers + the Intimidating Presence Bloodrider attachment, but that would still not have been as good as the FM, who also have Vicious and a 3+ armor save. I agree that something can be done to make FM less of an auto-include in many many lists, but that’s more of an issue to address gaps in army rosters than to address an overpowered unit, which I do not think FM are.
I enjoy this channel but too many neutrals are used in this game. Destroys the games storytelling.
I really enjoy adding story-telling aspects into my matches, but that’s usually done after the game during the editing process. For most of my games, the storytelling is subordinate to a good or interesting army list. For a tournament game (like this one), the scales are even further balanced in favor of a competitive army list.
Unfortunately for Targaryens at the moment, to be competitive they need some Neutral support. For this list, I needed a 6pt bunker to put Marselen into. Blackguard were the only unit that fit the bill, unless I wanted to put Marselen into a more fragile unit. On the cavalry end, there is no substitute for Flayed Men as a heavy cav option in Targs at the moment, outside of a Khal Drogo list with Bloodriders. There will be more non-tournament games in the future, and those games typically feature fewer neutral units…. except for Golden Company units… because sometimes I can’t help but shoe-horn them into my lists.
@@imperialminis857 rather than put Marselen in Blackguard, what if you dropped the Freedmen, put him in Pikemen, then added a Bloodrider to the Flayed Men? Just curious on your thoughts
Those are actually all decisions I considered when making this list. I really didn’t have any flex points in this list, so upgrading any unit or NCU meant losing something else significant. My plan for Marselen and his unit was for him and the Freedmen to basically tank most of the opponent’s army while my maneuver element smashed one flank and then enveloped the center. But while the FM/Dragon we’re doing their thing, Marselen would have to stand up to multiple units. The Unsullied Pikemen have the Shield Wall order, but it only works once per round and it does nothing against ranged attacks. A 4+ armor save can easily count for nothing versus Sundering or a Vulnerable token. I knew I’d need the Blackguards’ 3+ armor save to stand up more consistently against multiple attacks. Their morale is worse, but that was a trade off I was ok with. Also, Horrific Visage is a more consistent attack deterrent than Set for Charge, which only works on the initial attack.
Dropping one Freedmen meant I’d only be guaranteed to bring on the initial Missandei Freedmen unit, and I might not ever draw another from my deck. My Freedmen were important for activation advantage, Supply Aid, and for baiting enemy attacks. I thought about taking a Bloodrider attachment in the FM (the Fueled by Slaughter guy), since the Weakened immunity would have been great, but then I’ve sunk 10 points into that unit and, if it got nuked, I’d really be hurting. The FM nearly nuked themselves from their initial attack!

Hey, I REALLY like your normal Batreps, but the tournament videos are completely uninteresting for me. I know that you are playing in this one, but I actually rolled with my eyes and asked myself "when does he go back to make normal videos".
Thanks for the feedback. Do you mind letting me know what it is about the tournament videos you find uninteresting? There have been a lot of tournament videos recently. That’s partly to do with the fact that there have been a lot of local tournaments toward the end of last year and in the lead up to LVO. Also, tournaments offer me the chance to film multiple games in one day, when I would normally only film one game per weekend during a typical gaming session.
My play/hobby time is very limited, so over the past few months I haven’t had much chance at all to play normal pickup games. It’s mostly been scheduled tournaments. It’ll probably be a few months until the next tournament though, so after the next video (from this same tournament), it’ll probably be more regular games for a while.
I’d appreciate your feedback though on what it is about the tournament games you don’t enjoy. Lack of dice cam, background noise, more serious stakes of the game? Perhaps in the future I can use that feedback to make them more enjoyable. Thanks for the comment!

Use high Sparrow MCU. Just attack the unit the high Sparrow is influencing and you'll be healing 10 units per round.
Use Kevin, cregor Clegane, Adam marbrand as Commander. There all amazing.
Another ncu you may want to consider is tomen, giving you the potential to use up to 3 intrigue and subterfuge, that alone will shut down a game for your opponent.
Adam marbrand is incredible.
Lannister are top tier.
