Taylor is a legend in English football. What he did with Watford and villa in just a few seasons was amazing and he thoroughly deserved the England job. As a young villa fan at the time I was gutted when he left as villa were in a poor state when he took over and got them to Finnish 2nd in the top division from the 2nd division in 3 seasons. He took Watford from division 4 to 1 in 4 seasons too

He clearly wasn't the man for the job, but TBH there wasn't really a long list of candidates. Clough and Kendall were both past it and alcoholics at the time and there was no prospect of a foreign coach. Maybe Venables might have done a slightly better job, but then again he could also have sunk his own career (and we'd have missed Euro '96). Besides, he was in and out of court for most of the 90's (I actually did work experience in '94 at the High Court when he was there for the Alan Sugar trial). Wilkinson was ensconced at Leeds, and Jack Charlton wouldn't have left Ireland. Can't really think of any other top English managers of the time. All the top teams had Scottish mangers, Fergie, Dalglish, Graham etc and Keegan and Hoddle were only really just starting.

Taylor was a great man, I always like his honesty and approach. It's just that he was a little out of his depth with the expectations placed upon his England team. Obviously there was some bad luck, and that Koeman tackle should have always been a red card, but this didn't happen because of one play or player. Ultimately Taylor inherited a job that was never going to work out. This England team was mainly one of rebuild, every country deals with this from time to time. Wrong manager at wrong time. Five years later, who knows what might have been.

The personal attacks were 100% out of order, but about what you'd expect from the British tabloid press. They never really help anyone but themselves, so no England manager should ever expect support from the press. He did come into the job at a less than optimal time, from both an expectational level (the 'High' of Italy '90 and 'Gazza mania' etc) and also from a depth and injury perspective. If you think that many of our best players were injured between '91 -'94 (Gazza, Pearce, Barnes, Shearer) and the lack of depth and consistency in MF (players like Palmer, Thomas, Sinton, Daley etc). However, lesser nations were getting results with lesser players. This is where Taylors coaching and managerial skills were lacking. He had on the surface a fairly decent CV with Watford and Villa. But ultimately (partially due to the Hysel ban) little European experience (I think Watford had 1 maybe 2 short lived UEFA Cup stints). Robson was very experienced in both coaching and tactics, especially in Europe, having won the UEFA Cup with Ipswich in 1981. Taylor was not very experienced in international football (maybe even naïve) and sadly it often showed, especially when it mattered most. He showed in '92 that he had no real plan B tactics wise. Yes he had a lot of injured players missing from the squad, but a good manager would be able to execute with whatever was available. I also think Taylor was not very good at communicating his ideas and tactics to the players, who often looked directionless and uninspired. If he had a masterplan, it was clear the players didn't understand it, or how to execute it. International football is not club football, where you can spend large amounts of time getting inside players heads and endlessly practising drills and tactics. You have to get everybody on board with the general idea from the off or it simply won't work. It looked to me that Taylor kind of lived out every armchair football fans fantasy/nightmare. You often think you could easily win the league if you could just put all the best players from the league in your own team. But it doesn't often work like that, especially if you have no management talent. A winning team is one that knows what each members job is and how to do it to the best of their ability, in compliment to the job of their colleagues. It's no good being a super fast winger with excellent crossing, if you get to the bye-line 10 seconds before your striker and vice-versa. I don't think many of the players in Taylors squads knew exactly what was expected of them or exactly how the team was supposed to play and exactly how they were supposed to set up to take on opponents. It seemed to be almost the Mike Bassett mentality of 4-4-2 come what may, roll the dice and hope for the best. And we got the worst.

To be fair, they're all the worst manager we've ever had. Not one of them has ever escaped the criticism of the press and the fans. Taylor was no better and no worse than any of the other managers before him, and that includes Ramsey. In 1958, the press had a go at Winterbottom for his poor selections in Sweden. Ramsey's relationship with the press was always really poor (he had a pathological distrust of 'outsiders'), and Revie was slaughtered when he went to Saudi. Amazing to think that if that German had sent off Koeman and awarded the penalty and England had missed, that England would still probably have qualified. I have always wondered whether the Kraut was under orders to ensure that England didn't get through that night. To stop the hooligans from travelling to the States. FIFA does work in mysterious ways, after all.

That’s really unfair m. You seem like another England fan that think Gascoigne was robbed.
He was brilliant. On his day. The question you need to ask is how often did it happen.
He was disruptive. Required special attention and treatment. He cried when things weren’t going great (which is fine but not at the same time), he was shafted by Hoddle. Shafted by Taylor. It’s not true: it’s very different to manage someone and want them playing as a fan.
With respect to Gascoigne, I loved him as a kid and still do. I’m also 42 and mature enough to realise he was in many ways a god send, but in many ways he was a fucking idiot.
He was always overweight. As the Italians found out. He has that too heavy build like Ronaldo 9, where they need strict diets and a lot of discipline. Otherwise players with that build, their knees just buckle. Ronaldo 9 had knee problems, same as Gascoigne. It’s because they were prone to putting on weight. Gascoigne had zero discipline, and Ronaldo liked a party and a piss up.
Eventually both encountered managers that weren’t impressed by the mesmerising skills they had at 21 and reminded them that they are 30 and fat and live a high life and that something has had to give.
Gascoigne did incredibly well against Scotland and scored against a qualifying team. But he NEVER got near his performances in Italia 90. He joined Rangers and a big part of the terms is they let him play in both senses of the word. Great to have in a dressing room because the village idiot can be checked off but toxic as soon as something goes wrong.
The best players perform the best but also maintain their fitness regime and discipline. Or they are 3 season wonders.
I get the romance with Gascoigne. He was special. He was also his own worst enemy so if his football is off point, he’s out. He can eat as many kebabs as he wants.

Nothing wrong with Palmer per se, but he's not exactly a player you'd build an international team around, especially one which wasn't sure of how they were supposed to play. Other teams got results with average players, but they were highly disciplined sides who knew their job inside out. Even Norway wasn't exactly a team full of super stars (most of them wouldn't have got in our team) and even Holland struggled with all those great players who also had vast experience of European and international football. You could argue it was a poor showing from Holland to make such a meal of a group that had a poor England side in it. They fell apart in the USA themselves...
