Hey everyone! Paleo educator here! Offering some clarifications and info with Ethan's dinosaur talk 🦖🦕.
- Ethan is correct that there are some forms of knowledge that aren't discernible from fossils alone (certain behaviors, color, etc). However! Depending on how well the dinosaur is preserved, we have been able to analyze color cells from skin or feathers impressions in some species (Borealopelta, Sinosauropteryx as examples).
- Tyrannosaurus is best described as a hunter AND scavenger, not just one. It was a proposed theory, but If you can imagine carnivores today, we see animals do both unless otherwise specialized (like a vulture for instance).
- Dinosaurs do reproduce sexually and the cloaca is used by both male and female dinosaurs for reproduction and excretion of waste. Slay, Olivia 💅.
- Birds are in fact dinosaurs. All "non-avian" dinosaurs were the ones that went extinct during the End-Cretaceous mass extinction. Avian dinosaurs survived to today.
- Big-ups to Dan for using the term "megafauna", which is used to describe large species within an ecosystem (fun fact, it's mainly based on a species being over 80lbs or so. So humans are also megafauna).
