  • So, we have some great news! The Canada Dental Care Plan is proceeding…a little slower than many envisioned, but it is happening thanks to the Supply and Confidence Agreement with the current minority government. The national dental plan begins with letters going out to invite qualified people to apply, beginning in December of 2023.
This will go a long way to ensure a healthy and happy community for all, including newcomers to Canada
Dental Plan for Canadians. Senior's Dental Care Plan. Dental Care For Seniors. Senior Citizen Benefits From Government

So I'm retired age 65, I have a company dental plan but I have to pay 30% of each bill. My income is less than $39000 and I have to pay the deductible but this government plan don't. I think they should pay the 30% back if you are bellow the $70000 a year. That would be the fair thing to do as I pay my taxes for 40 years! What about a maximum in a year? I do, I can only do up to $2000 a year maximum and this is for 2 people! So At the end of it, it seams we are penalize because we have a dental plan!

The BC Dental Association has decided that its members will not participate in the program. My dentist is not participating and there is no mechanism to force the dentists to participate in the program. So, no access to dental care through the new national dental care program - it's just window dressing, a dental insurance program with no dentists.

Hi again, Glen. I just received a response from the BC Dentist's Association. It reads, in part, "the BC Dental Association has not advised members to not participate in the Canadian Dental Care Program (CDCP), and furthermore, as a professional association, BCDA is not in a position to dictate the actions of its members. Our message to members from the start has been that before making the choice to participate, dentists have all the information they need to fully understand the impact of participation on their individual practices."
Their statement goes on to say, "The CDCP is an opportunity to help millions of Canadians who do not have an oral health care plan, but this program needs work sustainably for both patients and dentists."
So, the Association hasn't made any dictates. However, that said, as we all understand, there is still some clarifications desired by all as the plan evolves.

It was mostly a lie!! They promised free dental if your income less than 90,000. Not true. If over 70,000 you are stuck with paying up to 60% of the bill. And the bill will be higher than before, because Canada Dental is short changing the dentists, so those who do not get it all free will pay the new higher fees. (Provincial Pharmacare has been causing that for years, with the gov paying pharmacies less than normal price.) And you do not qualify if your pension includes the ability to opt back in! I opted out long ago because after retiring and losing the employer subsidy, the premiums were just below the max allowable claims!!!!
And if I opt back in, I pay premiums but cannot make a claim for the first year. So, my tax on my modest pension is paying for the select few and I get nothing!

I hear ya. The more information that gets revealed the more it looks like another half-hearted attempt that wasn't thought all the way through. So many of these things are created without ever consulting the end users. In my case, however, my dental coverage was cancelled automatically when I retired so the federal program, as it now stands, will at least cover some of the expense. Another problem that may arise is if we have a change of government to one that decides to cancel it. At any rate, I wish you well.

People will use their regular dentist. If your family net income is below $70,000 your dental work is completely covered. Those with family incomes between $70,000 and $79,000 will have a 40 per cent co-payment. And those between $80,000 and $89,000 will have a 60 per cent co-payment plan.
