I started listening to opera with love as a litte child. My parents use to play all Maria Callas records. Later when I listening to other Soprani, I never liked it. The voice of Maria Callas is so unique.

This is not even Tebaldi at her best (at times) but the clarity of tone rings true. And, Butterfly is not my favorite Callas role, but that's me comparing Callas to Callas. Netrebko has a great instrument but there is a lot of "noise" in her sound. It's artificially dark and that's not because she is Russian. Although this is not the worst example, she is frequently sloppy with the music as if she were too busy to properly learn her roles, relying on her popularity and influence to get by. Compare this to the impeccable artistry of Callas and there is no contest.

From just the first note - Callas and Tebaldi sing WITHIN the note or in other words, the pitch of the note is CLEAR. Netrebko sings *around* the note bc she, as most modern opera singers, wobble instead of vibrate. They say now that vibrato is a result of being totally relaxed and that their vibrato (wobble) is natural, but it's not nor does it sound relaxed and natural or good at all. Callas and Tebaldi, as all old school singers, had CONTROL over their vibrato bc they used their diaphragms, had proper control over the finer laryngeal muscles, and had proper registration to achieve their sounds.

Callas was incomparable in her bel canto parts, but when it comes to music requiring lush Italian spinto sound, Tebaldi wins every time. One critic compared her ‘Tu, tu, piccolo addio’ to an Italian ‘Götterdämmerung’.

JOHN BOY I agree that times have changed but because of that, what makes traditionalists 'jealous' or angry(concerned) is knowing that good content is not being put out there while opera houses charge an arm and a leg to see a Rigoletto set in a futuristic steam punk reality with singers who don't have basic understanding of the voice. Its also an imbalance in the music. Nowadays we spend more time talking about music than actually working on it trying to find some higher meaning in the work when all they do is come up with justifications 4 their "interpretations". Also I will try to say this as kindly as possible: unless the content is absolutely hateful, any channel has a right to post what they want, if a person has an opinion on a singer they have that right assuming they r a musician. times have changed but in opera not for the better sadly.

Casey Franco. - Agreed. Forty years ago Tebaldi said the then current crop of singers sounded like mosquitoes. If people don't like singers these days it's not because they don't like change. It's because singers today really aren't very good. Not all singers of yore were great, but there were so many who were really good. A year ago I decided to give up going to the Met in HD because I could not believe how not good (I'm trying to be courteous) the singers were, and adding insult to injury was the apparent adulation accorded them by the in house audience.
That's my rant of the day.

I love De Los Angeles, Freni, and Moffo as well! They obviously don't have hefty voices like Tebaldi and Callas, but their lyrical interpretations are just as valid in my eyes. I love De Los Angeles' Butterfly the most, with Di Stefano and Gobbi, conducted by the masterly Gavazzeni. I also discovered this recently, a live performance of Butterfly with Caballe, her husband Bernabe Marti (who I believe Ponselle and Tucker said was one of the most underrated tenors ever) and the underrated baritone Ausensi, all conducted by the underrated conductor Gianfranco Rivoli: czcams.com/video/qdrlu1F3rx0/video.html

What's apparent aside from Netrebko's atrocious technique producing her throaty, unstable, and unfocused tone is her lack of musicality. With Tebaldi and Callas, the phrasing is paced and refined with an instinctual understanding of how to phrase it. Netrebko bellows through this aria like she's hacking wood.

This would be like trying to compare Garifullina to Dame Anita Cerquetti. As good as she is she is NOWHERE near Dame Cerquetti in light of sustained notes and less than ever about technique. And this fault of the faster pushy business ideas of today's producers. That's why the level is so much lower today
