    To reinforce what was said in the video:
    1: Volunteer for EVERYTHING!!! Be motivated and first to volunteer, ESPECIALLY if it's a lousy detail. After a short while, they will tell you no and pick others and you'll find you end up doing less details than everyone else.
    2: PT your ass off!
    3: G.I. your shit! Keep your barracks and yourself squared away. Don't wait for someone else, i.e. CQ, AR15's, Profile Rangers, to clean up the AO.
    4: PT your ass off!
    5: Ask questions and apply what you learn! Your Team Leader and Squad Leader are wellsprings of knowledge, or at least they should be. Ask them to teach you and apply what they teach to your life.
    6: PT your ass off!
    7: Be fanatical about esprit de corps. Your unit comes first, your unit is your family. Mom is the CO and Dad is the 1SG. Always make your parents proud, especially Dad!
    8: PT your ass off!
    9: LDRSHIP! Learn it, live it!
    10: PT your ass off!
    11: If there is a class or school slot available find out how you can earn it and go get it!
    12: PT your ass off!
    13: Don't bitch! If you HAVE to bitch, do it behind closed doors and ONLY to the person directly over you. Obviously there are exceptions, but if I have to spell it out then perhaps the military is not for you.
    14: PT your ass off!
    15: Keep yourself gainfully employed! Don't wait around for someone to give you a task. Find one and do it. The soldiers who generally get tasked to work late or do bs details are the one's who are standing/sitting around doing nothing.
    16: PT your ass off!
    17: No one gives a damn that you're in the military! Don't be the douchebag who goes off post with his dogtags outside his shirt. Most of the people in an Army town are in the military, prior service or hate the military. You're not impressing anyone with your Hollywood attitude and you'll most likely get your ass kicked and make your unit look bad. (See #7)
    18: PT stands for Play Time! It's on you whether physical training is a punishment or an opportunity. Play Time your ass off!
    Great and helpful video, battle!
    Hooah!

      You might want to check with your Admin or RNCO. If you were erroneously promoted, and receive pay for the erroneous rank, you will have to pay that money back when they discover the error. March 2016 - June 2017 = 15 months Time in service (TIS) which even with a waiver, would leave you short by 3 months. Reg citation below.
      AR 600-8-19 • 25 April 2017
      Processing Enlisted Promotions to Private E-2, Private First Class, and Specialist
      Eligibility criteria for automatic (RA and USAR) or immediate (ARNG) promotion to PV2, PFC, and SPC will be as follows:
      (1) Promotion to PV2 is 6 months TIS.
      (2) Promotion to PFC is 12 months TIS and 4 months TIG.
      (3) Promotion to SPC is 24 months TIS and 6 months TIG.
      Waivers for TIS and TIG:
      (a) Promotion to PV2 may be waived at 4 months TIS.
      (b) Promotions to PFC may be waived at 6 months TIS and 2 months TIG.
      (c) Promotions to SPC may be waived at 18 months TIS and 3 months TIG.

    Some folks make rank really fast in the Army. When I was a 1st LT, my platoon sergeant, an E6, was younger than me. He’d gone from E1 to E6 in the MPs in 4 or 5 years. I’d worked on a couple of degrees so I was 24 at the time. It was a bit odd having him ask me things that I’d normally be asking my platoon sergeant, but it worked out.

    Find an MOS that is in very much in demand with a very high ASVAB requirement.

    National guard you can get promoted for recommending someone and as long as they enlist you will be promoted. Also for stripes for skills test you can get promoted.
    Essentially you can come in as an E-1 and do both before you ship and go to basic training as an E-3.

  • @dianas6799
    @dianas6799 Před 5 lety

    For the most part, I agree with everything that Matt is saying here, but I just want to clarify a few things. I was a personnel sergeant, so enlisted promotions was a big part of my job.
    Junior enlisted promotions are done at the Company level. Promotions E1 through E4 are automatic promotions as long as you meet the time in grade and time in service requirements. However, if a Soldier is flagged on the effective date of promotion, this essentially blocks the automatic promotion. Once the flagged is lifted, this will require a personnel action to get the Soldier to the new grade.
    What Matt is talking about in the video is called promotions with a waiver, which means accelerated promotions. But, something that Matt does not address is that these are capped at the Company level, so every Company will have only very limited number of waivers that they can award. Therefore, many times volunteering and sucking up to your NCOs won’t make much of a difference.

      If you havn't received a letter from him yet then wait until then(I assume you have though). You can send him stuff after that. Also, you can't send candy/food of any kind. No books/magazines or other reading material besides a Bible. You can send him pictures but for us we were not allowed to get a lot of pictures, so only send like 5ish at a time so that he doesn't get them taken away. If he doesn't have a watch, I would send him one. My parent's sent me a watch at basic after I asked for one in the first letter. Just a cheap $10 one will be fine. Other than that I would just send him a letter asking him if he needs anything. Keep in mind, anything you send that is not allowed will most likely be thrown away! Hope this helps, good luck to him! Benning is tough but it makes the best soldiers :)

      They separate the 11B from every other MOS within the first hour or so of Reception and they put you in a different company. 11B does OSUT so they couldn't be in the same company as other MOS' anyways. Aside from that everything is basically the same. I still had drill sgts who were infantry that even just came back from a deployment. It's more like Benning as a whole is different from any other BCT location.

    • @MattWard89

      Corporal is something that you generally only see on deployments and it'll just be by needs of your unit. It's prettyyy rare to actually have a corporal in the army.

    • @MattWard89
      @MattWard89  Před 5 lety

      Basically..... Corporal happens when they need somebody to be a SGT but can’t promote somebody for whatever reason so they “promote” (not really a promotion) a specialist to corporal which is the losers NCO rank. Just so that the former SPC can command a small team that doesn’t have an NCOIC (IC is in charge)

But just some common ones would be pushups, v-up, prone row, cherry pickers, hold your gun out in front of you, front leaning rest, 8 count pushup, etc... So, it varies but it's usually not fun lol

    • @MattWard89
      @MattWard89  Před 7 lety +1

      Yeah, my recruiter told me it is really unlikely that I will get the MOS I wanted 25B. I did get it though. I just came back later that week to check the list again. The problem with the reserves is the only MOS' available will be based on the units near where you live. So if you want to be 31B then there may not be any 31B slots around you. But I would maybe just check back later. That's what I did because I didn't want to join unless I got that job.

      Yeah, right away. I graduated from AIT Dec 16th and started back college that Spring semester. Which was about 3 weeks later. You just have to make sure you enroll and sign up for college classes at AIT so that you are good to go when the next semester comes around.

    Thanks for your info. and videos, I've quick question- i just got in as E-4 to start because I have N.D.(Naturopathic Doctor) equivalent education from India, i can't go for officer program because I'm not U.S. citizen yet,But my recruiter said that once I finish my AIT (I will get my U.S. citizenship on my BCT graduation) I can ask my commander to put my officer's packet once I'm done with my AIT.. So is that true or he's just giving me false hope?

    • @MattWard89
      @MattWard89  Před 7 lety

      I honestly couldn't say for sure. I will say that even if that happens and you get a packet submitted you aren't guaranteed a spot like you would be if you got it on your contract. Eventually you should be able to go if you really want to but I wouldn't get your hopes up with it being RIGHT after AIT.
