    @mr.k.i.s.s7496 Před 5 lety +52

    You have to understand that the Army goal is a fit and lean soldier, this why you won't gain much muscle mass in Basic. You March everywhere. Your access to weight training equipment will be non-existent during Basic. You will be using bodyweight exercises. The New PT Test is geared towards soldiers who have already passed BCT. So odds are, you will do the soon-to-be old test to get a baseline of your Physical Fitness. There are plenty of CZcamsr's who are into Calisthenics who can get you ready for BCT. But, just like Matt said, you are going to have to clean up your diet, and get your mind in the fitness game. The earlier you start, the better off you will be at Basic. Even if you don't join, exercise can help you in life.

  • @WhoWouldWantThisName
    @WhoWouldWantThisName Před 5 lety +1

    Great job on this subject Matt.
    In Basic, I think we did more `Flutter Kicks' than anything else lol, especially when getting smoked. I know those helped me with my sit-ups a lot. One thing I remember when getting ready to ship out was that I could do crunches very well, but not sit-ups. That is something I'm glad you stressed. It is necessary that you actually do the exercises you will actually be doing in training and your PT tests. Also, when my feet, or ankles, were not held down I couldn't actually do a single sit-up. My ratio of upper to lower body weight was not helping. With more exercises for my abs and hip-flexors though I got to where I could do full sit-ups without support. For those new out there, yes you will have someone holding your feet or ankles for an actual APFT, but during regular PT, or when being smoked "corrective training", you will not have that luxury. So other exercises to help get you to the point of doing another exercise is key. Oh, and in AIT we also did push-ups from our knees after we couldn't do anymore regular reps, then just from the waist up, like that ab stretch where you look to the sky shoulders high. Granted we were doing hundreds of reps, but still muscle failure is muscle failure no matter how many it takes to get there right?
    Man, I wish I had these videos before I enlisted.

    @instridewith_life Před 4 lety +17

    I didn't used to be able to do ANY regular pushups (like literally couldnt do 1) started out doing pushups on my knees and I and now I can do at least 3 or 4 regular pushups!

    Hoping to enlist in a few months and a pretty good exercise I started was walking for 9 minutes then running for 1. As you get used to it you can change up the time to 8 minutes of walking then a 2 minute run. As you get more stamina and strength you can just do a minute less of walking then add a minute of running. Eventually you just run for 10+ minutes no problem. (I started off walking for 5 then running for 5 for 20 minutes) I’m getting close to running the full 20 with no problem.

    Seeing as Police Academy has a lot of the same physical requirements as Army BCT, these videos are helpful. Also guys, there's an app called home workout that will really help you with pushups.

    Hello Matt, I'm a 450lbs 32yo former powerlifter. I can run/walk a mile in about 11 minutes. I've hit a point in my life where my goals have changed and I want to join the army. Where do I start besides obviously loosing weight? I bench press over my bodyweight and squat and deadlift almost double or better. I'm currently around %38-%41 body fat. I'm on a ketogenic diet and dropping weight rapidly with that. Thanks in advance

    I'm 28 5 foot 10 179 pounds and when I googled it I found a spread sheet that said max was 144 and my jaw dropped. Went to the goarmy website and it said my max weight was 195 what a relief...

    For a guy that's 26 and joining, is the opportunity for being an SF out of the picture in the future or would I still be within the age requirement? Cheers man

    I don’t have a ship date yet but let’s say I ship in 3-4 months, how much progress do you think I could make by doing these push ups and running, maybe even going to the gym a couple times a week?? I’m 17 & am in high school so that combined with life, do you think it’s possible I can really improve?

    I lost weight for Meps I’m 5’10 and was originally 235 pounds. I’m now 187 which means I barely made it for my height and weight. I’m being shipped off at the 22nd but I just passed Meps like 2 weeks ago. Is it even worth it? Thanks for anyone that responds

      I'm 5'10 also and weighed around 230 before I decided to join back in 2013. From december I lost 30 lbs before I left for basic in march. At basic I lost an additional 20 lbs taking me to 180. After I got to my active duty unit I went from 180 down to 166 lbs, now after being out of the military for 4 years, I'm 250 lbs and just now getting back into shape starting with the basics again, it's all mind games and everyone is capable. You got this

    Im making progress on everything except for the run. And the reason for that is because I have nowhere I can safely run practically where I live..there's no sidewalks really. The one time I tried I spend like half of the time listening for cars. And I can't do that we'll with wind in my ears so I had to walk and it's kinda windy lately. So I'm kinda fucked on the running portion.

    Would playing basketball help with endurance and running?

    • @MattWard89
      @MattWard89  Před 6 lety +1

      Yes and no. It will help more than other things but just because somebody plays basketball everyday doesn't mean they will pass an APFT. Now if you are training and maybe playing full court and run a lot that also helps but when training for a two mile run you need to run longer distances without stopping.
