  • A wheezing, smoking Maine Central U23B works the M&L (Manchester & Lawrence) branch of Guilford between Lawrence,MA and Salem,NH (along RT.28) on 09/10/1992. Watch as the undermaintained GE junker slips its wheels and smokes. Video by the late Richard 'Moose' Ouellette. If you like our stuff, Please comment and/or subscribe!

    The loco isn't the only thing undermaintained here. That wheel slip is being caused by all the weeds getting crushed on the rails. Some vegetation control would not hurt on this line.

      This rail line in Lawrence and its branches lines are all abandoned. No trains have run through them since the 1990s.

    It sure smokes a lot more than it should, but it's getting the job done! 1992 was still pretty hard times for a lot of railroads in the Northeast. Not as bad as the 70s, but still bad in some areas. I see the grade crossing signals don't work and the track is very weed choked. I'm sorry the guy who made this video is no longer around. Obviously his heart was in the right place. I'm glad he got out and took these shots. Thanks for posting. Further to the south in 1992, NJ Transit was over the 20 year mark with their fleet of U-Boats in commuter service. In a few years they'd all be gone. A lot of guys rail fanned them, one has been preserved. They were nice locomotives with a unique sound. I think NJ Transit's were better maintained. This one sounds as if it's got a miss in the engine. It's definitely tired.

    I was four when this video was shot. It would've been cool to see this in person, and have a conscious memory. I know I've said it before, but I'm glad to have this channel so I can see all of these tracks I've always known as being abandoned... in use!

    Judging from the bridge at 0:15, this line used to be double-track like a lot of the B&M. Hard to believe that such an important line would be in this shape by 1992 and be gone today. That happens sometimes because of mergers, but that is not the case here. Just the flight of heavy industry and competition from trucking for what was left.

    I always wanted to see trains here when I was a kid in the 80s and 90s but was never lucky enough to catch them. But who woulda thought, someone was out there video taping and would eventually upload them to the internet! This is so cool. As I type this, I'm at the part where the train is going by ComputerTown! I bought several Macs and accessories there! And I'd always like hanging out in the parking lot as much as being inside, just in case a train would go by!

    Wheel slip has nothing to do with being under maintained. It has to do with trailing tonnage on a curve and no doubt no sand. Obviously the unit is producing power to the wheels or it wouldn't slip. The engineer is using the independent air to control wheel slip and actually did well.

    this engine in it's good days was D&H 2309 before guilford raped the railroad of it's best equipment and sent it to the b&m and mec where the motive power and properties were subsequently run into the ground as witnessed here .... before guilford, the D&H U-boats and GP39-2's were still very good power and well-taken care of ... As late as May 2014, MEC 288 [ex-D&H 2309] still existed, but in Canada on the Quebec Central Rwy .. She was intact at the time in 2014 but had been a victim of some cannibalism

    Gulford at it best,don't fix anything and rip up rails. Gulford should be called a scrap company. not a RR. here in ct they scraped most of the rail they got from Conrail so they no longer have their own route south to NH and most branch lines were taken out when they no longer could maintain service to customers because of bad track and bad time tables, I think they did it on purpose maybe there is more money in scrap then running a RR

    • @cmanlovespancakes
      @cmanlovespancakes Před 7 lety

      The economy didn't help either. Manufacturing is not like it use to be back in the 1960s or earlier in New England. There is not much industry left in the region that requires rail transportation. Trucking has really put the screws to the railroads. For most companies it is cheaper to ship by truck than rail since they don't have the volume to save with transporting by rail, and the railroad won't keep up the track for low volume customers.
