I totally agree, Jackson was honestly v controlling, frequently springing things on Sookie and being paternalistic about what she can and can’t do, and although it would resolve (if you could call it that) by him being supportive in the end, it really seemed more like manipulation to me bc he’d go right back to being controlling right after instead of actually being reflective or apologizing. But then Sookie started doing the same thing to Jackson! Constantly violating each other’s consent, making sweeping decisions regardless of the other’s input, and then ~making up~ rinse repeat. That’s what we in the business call a toxic cycle lol

Yes, Jackson shouldn't have lied and he should have talked about kids before marrying Sookie but forcing your partner into elective surgery is wrong - don't care if it is 'reversible' everyone has the right to their own body and every procedure has risks.

OMG someone finally said it! I have a lot of issues with Gilmore Girls today, but I will always adore it and Melissa McCarthy in particular, because it was the first time I ever saw a fatter woman on TV just be a normal person. You know having a job, falling in love, living her life, and her weight never being an issue or the butt of a joke (I feel like every other comedy from the time is seeped in fat jokes and fatphobia related humor, i.e. HIMYM). In fact, I don't think it was ever referenced in the show at all. Even today that is an astonishingly revolutionary concept. I think Sookie and Jackson's relationship went downhill when the writing did in the later seasons, but to me that doesn't take away from the sheer joy I had as a girl in seeing a character like Sookie on TV. Love your videos and takes on things - they are always well thought out and presented.

Gilmore Girls definitely had some fatphobic lines, even in the revival, that was disappointing. But I agree, it was never an issue with Sookie's character. I especially loved the storyline with the guy from culinary school who had a thing for her. She was portrayed as a successful woman who was admired for her personality and talent. I also loved how Luke and Sookie developed this great friendship, respecting each other as gifted cooks.

He defenitely did it because he still wanted more children, and didn’t seem to care at all about Sookie’s feelings about being pregnant, giving birth and how it would affect her career. I really enjoyed Sookie and Jackson's love story. The third pregnancy storyline really killed the vibe. It really broke my heart to see Sookie resenting Jackson for lying to her. She became so bitter about it, it changed her character, rightfully so. Her going away for a while during the revival was also a direct result of this. After baby no. 2 Sookie was ready to get back to doing things for herself, perhaps even moving forward in her career. Since she couldn't do it then, due to her third child, she made up for it later. It even seemed like she went away without thinking about her children, leaving everything to Jackson, it seemed very off-character.

They were so sweet, but as a comedy relief, the writers made them look so stupid and childlike, there where times i couldn't stand them anymore.
I don't like that they seem to get Sookie out of "the market" super quickly with whomever, (make her settle to this child man, very sweet, but couldn't work in real life) so Lorelai could be the only and main love interest for all the introduced male characters; the writers did this to every female they could, as there was not any other single, beautiful, smart and funny women in the whole planet only Lorelai and Rory. also their friendship seems to be one sided, Sookie is only a good and supportive friend in theory, but in practice I don't see her helping much
I don't like this butchering of characters :c

Jacksons emotional reactions are those of a child. I feel like sookie scheduling the vasectomy, albeit wrong, was because she saw it as the only way to not have more children because he always wants to get his way. Sookie and Jackson are both potrayed as silly and quirky and dumb to make Lorelai seems much more together and smart and ”boss lady”, if you get what I mean. Their relationship, although most of the time sweet, seems like something they got into because it was convenient. I always thought that the whole point of the show is how a lack of communication messes up people and relationships. There aren’t many relationships in the show with good communication. Only 2 romantic ones that I can think of… Richard and Emily (and even that breaks down the moment he feels adrift after retirement) and Babette and her guy. I can’t remember his name right now. Lorelei and Rory have good communication for large chunks of the show, but when that breaks down the show is almost painful to watch (by design I think). I’m not actually arguing with any of your points. I just think it was all by design.

I feel like the writers left in the seventh season just wanted to nuke anything good in the series. I think it was terrible that Jackson lied about something like this, but it was also kind of weird that Sookie scheduled the procedure for him. I sort of feel like the writers sacrificed for manufactured drama to go against the personalities and all known character developments of many characters, especially in the seventh season. They messed up Lane's life too just to heighten the drama. I think it was all kind of cheap on their part, but I get that in some ways they were written into a corner. I feel like they could have fleshed out more of the characters or let some positive things happen.

The other thing which drove home how bad their communication is: they had that scene where they started yelling at Davey to do things when he was too young to understand or do them. And their explanation was "he has to learn." So they aren't just bad at communicating. They've actually deluded themselves into believing that bad communication is *good*, and should be taught to their child.
I kind of wonder if the writers used it as an analog for spanking, since that would have been more controversial. To make it "funny," they invented this other, probably equally terrible form of communicating with young children.

Firstly, yeay thank you for doing a video on sookie and jackson! Also did you remember their talk about a move in? It was so weird, he commented "my landlord asked if i should pay the rent" and then sookie, pragmatically answers with "well, yes, you love the place, what a silly question". jackson replied "but its a baaaacheloooors pad do you think i should move in in my baaaaaaaaachleoooors pad?". and THEN he was mad because she didn't figure out on her own that he wanted to move in with her! A normal, mature conversation would be "hey, i'm more at your place than i am in mine. what do you think, do you want to move in together?".
their banter was cute when they weren't together, but as a couple you need to figure out how to work on conflicts together and they seemed to be against each other every time we see them on screen. he pulls stuff like this all the time, when he is mad that sookie can't read his thoughts. maybe its a critism to men who think figuring them out is their wifes(/moms) job? Though i actually enjoyed the dialogue with rory, because he was right calling her out on only thinking of herself and her mom and not the adult who was most important to lorelai. i don't think he wanted her to get pregnant, he just didn't want to agree with sookie (as always) and then it was just conveniant for him. like most white cis het males he didn't think his actions had consequences.

I feel like I can only excuse the terrible third pregnancy storyline because Melissa McCarthy in real life got pregnant and they had to come up with something to explain why she was suddenly pregnant. I do not think Jackson got her pregnant on purpose because I truly feel like he was happy with two children already. Remember when Lorelai and Luke have dinner with Sookie and Jackson and they’re having so much trouble already raising two kids as is. Prior to Season 7, I tdo believe that Jackson had the vasectomy as ASP intended. according to Jackson he thought she was on the pill and she thought he had the procedure done. Which means they had been having unprotected sex for over a year. Spring/Summer 2005 to Winter 2006. Which means they would’ve/could’ve gotten pregnant earlier. I think a much better plot line and story would’ve been Jackson’s procedure not being entirely effective. There are cases where a pregnancy can occur after a vasectomy. But clearly the Season 7 writers were in over their head and thought a quirky but yet another clumsy mistake on Jackson’s part would be “funnier” when it really isn’t. Canon-wise, Jackson and Sookie have extremely bad communication problems. I think they were fine together because they have energies that match in terms of emotional chaos. They have good moments like Jackson sleeping with the zucchini to be perfect for the soup for the Dragonfly’s opening. I truly think that they were gonna have miscommunication immediately because of how they began. Why are Sookie and Jackson attracted to each other when they were constantly at each other’s throats when he dropped off produce? It’s supposed to be drama for the sake of humor. Thankfully Sookie and Jackson’s last issue on the show is discussing why she’s so angry at him and they at least begin to talk about it. I can only hope that’s the start of them moving forward.

But no she doesn't and schedules it in behind his back, without his knowledge. Then him not getting it instead of just saying that he doesn't want a vasectomy is also just so weird. Then when she gets pregnant, it could've all been avoided if they would've just communicated - the both of them. I do think what Jackson did was (I mean, obviously) way worse, because I mean she becomes pregnant because of his inability to communicate, but I do think you shouldn't overlook her actions, what she did was also shitty and selfish at best.

i love your videos! i have been absolutely bingeing them (not sure if i spelled that right haha). i never noticed this honestly, and i think it’s gross. i’m pretty sure that there are several svu episodes about a topic similar to this. not that this is necessarily like those or that svu is the perfect example, but it goes to show that this behavior is absolutely out of line!

i want to argue that sookie didn’t take jackson’s choice away it’s not like she dragged him to do it she scheduled an appointment she didn’t make him do anything but let’s say she attempted to take his choice away which is wrong to a certain degree he still did whatever he wanted without even telling her, sookie told him what she wanted him to do.

I feel the same way about Sookie and Jackson as I do about Pam and Jim in the office. Both couples struggle in what I call plot driven, inability to talk.
I personally like watching shows where the characters are not perfect people, so while i don’t agree with Jackson or sookie when it came to how they handled a lot of things. I still think they were a great couple.
I’ve been married 6 years and i think we are learning and growing still and sometimes I’m in the wrong and sometimes he is and a lot of times we both are. But that’s what makes these shows so real to me.

I’m pretty sure ASP added the third kid because Melissa McCarthy herself got pregnant at the time. She decided to write in Jackson lying about the vasectomy to make the pregnancy make sense, and this is another case where she thought we’d forgive a beloved character for doing something SO bad (like Rory sleeping with Dean) but she was wrong.

I've never really liked Jackson, it started for me with the pettiness at the basket bid thing.
After all the effort she put in making the basket and him getting mad she didn't understand his hint.
Be more obvious with your hint or just communicate!
I really started to dislike him when he yelled at Lorelai for the 4 in 4 years. Women talk to each other get a grip. If he talks to Lorelai like that in public, how does he talk to Sookie behind closed doors?
The final nail in the coffin for me is when Sookie is on bed rest and Luke is covering. Both Sookie and Jackson are terrible in the episode.
Sookie should have found a replacement and stepped back and Jackson shouldn't speak to Luke like that. Luke is doing them both a favour and they act like total assholes to him.
If I were him I'd have told them both to do one and lose my number.

They were both on the wrong. You cannot force someone (even if they are your husband!) to get a vasectomy. Sookie forced him to go with the nurse. Therefore, I can't blame him for not getting it, he didn't want to do it in the first place. Nevertheless, this doesn't give him a pass for lying to her about it. A couple should be honest and upfront with everything that revolves around their sexual life. Especially if the consequence of their actions is a child.

I just don't understand why he would assume she would remain on the pill when she thought he was medically sterile. Sure, a lot of women use birth control for other reasons, but just as many if not more women either aren't on birth control because of side effects or don't like being on birth control because of the side effects. Personally, the side effects weren't worth it for me. Of course she wasn't worried about the pill if she thought Jackson was shootin blanks.

I know I'm late lol (only finished GG for the first time a few days ago), but iirc Melissa Mccarthy was actually pregnant around the time of baby no.3 so they more or less had to include a third child, even though it didn't fit with Sookie and Jackson's story.
I don't get why they had to go down the "he lied about the vastectomy" route because I'm sure we all ended up hating Jackson for that, but the writers probaly had no clue how else to go about it. Still a bad move tho.
Just my thoughts here, loved the video! Totally agree.

  • @hafsahali8635
    @hafsahali8635 Před rokem +1

I think it’s unfair to judge Jackson based on that last pregnancy. That pregnancy was written in because McCarthy was actually pregnant. So if Jackson had a vasectomy the only option would be Sookie cheated. But that would destroy the marriage so Jackson had to just not get the vasectomy. If McCarthy hadn’t gotten pregnant in real life, this never would’ve happened therefore I choose to ignore the vasectomy issue.
Now removing that, I love Sookie and Jackson. I love Sookie but she’s insane. And Jackson being Jackson doesn’t stifle that. And Sookie understand and accepts much of Jackson’s oddities as well. I mean, she knew it was making Jackson happy to deep fry the turkey so even if it was eating her up inside, she just let it happen. Let Jackson have his fun. And Jackson knew Sookie wouldn’t rest wondering about Luke’s cooking in the Inn so he takes her over there because goddamit if Sookie wants to try the food she’s trying the food and he’ll make it happen. They’re silly and they’re cute and they love all the hard to accept aspects of each other and support each other endlessly.

You know at first I wanted to defend their relationship pre-revival, I thought “noooo way, they were adorable in the main show!” and then you brought up the SA. Because yes it is SA to lie about birth control, which Jackson did. So yeah, no defending that. I will say I don’t mind his reaction to her brining up moving in or being pregnant. I think in universe it makes sense that her saying “hey let’s move in” may have caused a moment of panic, but followed up by reflection that made him realize he was all in. But also, the trope of “are they going to break up, then suddenly they’re engaged!” is such a Hollywood favorite. As far as him panicking about the pregnancy, uhm relatable…

Idk I’m a little unpopular here. Jackson is sassy and I kinda like that. Sookie is clumsy, very obsessive compulsive, and a tad bit explosive. Jackson is explosive too but not in a violent threatening way. He’s not afraid to loudly voice his opinion to Lorelai, Rory, Luke, Taylor, Chris, Sookie, anybody. Jackson wasn’t broody, moody, elusive. I thought their arguments were cute and a lot of times they were both being thoughtful in their own way. Jackson bein mad that Rory didn’t consult Sookie, Jackson insisting on making Sookie a meal, Sookie insisting on redecorating her home for Jackson, Jackson panicking and wanting to make everything safe and right for their first child. They’re chaotic and even awful sometimes but that’s…life. And I love the episode where Jackson helps Sookie see that she hadn’t forgiven him. A lot of guys do something wrong and act like they don’t know why their partner is upset. Jackson was extremely imperfect but wasn’t a malicious person. At the core he really loved Sookie and it shows in the way he treated her overall.
