In this experiment, I chemically remove the shell of an egg and then demonstrate the affects of hypertonic and hypotonic solutions across the plasma membrane of an egg.
Can you get the same result from salted water and sugar water mix? I tried with my students and it was not what we got. Our eggs actually gained weight.
I haven't tried that but here are some thoughts: 1) was the egg dried before weighing? The first weight might be dry and the second might be after the eggs is wet the outside water may override anything lost inside the egg. 2) I'd warm the water up and make sure a significant amount of the sugar and salt are dissolved.
@@ProfessorRevell we added a lot of sugar and salt in two separate solutions and the egg still gained weight. We're just gonna do it your way. It gets better results. But yeah. We didn't dry the eggs before weighing. But it shouldn't be that significant if the sugar solutions are hypertonic enough. In any case, I showed my class your video and told them. That's what was supposed to happen. So thank you.
Greatly explained ☺️ Thank you!
i'm really greatful for the part when you popped the egg, because I was always confused about the nature of the egg ( hard boiled or raw)
