  • The wonderful people at Blackbird Simulations sent me a copy of their F4U Corsair to take a look at, so I took it to Boonville to throw it around the sky for a little while. While warbirds are not typically my "thing", I have to admit it looks and flies wonderfully.

    Still my favorite warbird in MSFS. Blackbird really nailed it with this one!

      It's a real pain in the arse to trim for level flight though. It just refuses to fly level.

    I have a ton of fun in my Corsair, it's just bonkers. I flew the various spitfires a lot which have about 4 switches randomly screwed in around the cockpit, getting into this beast is like climbing into a big ol' Murican hotrod. Flaps won't help you slow down much, they only lower as far as your airspeed will allow so if you're above the flaps limit you can do what you want with the flap lever and nothing will happen. In fact that's my standard approach technique, at some point in the approach just bang all the levers down to whatever you want for landing and the gear and flaps will lower themselves in stages as the plane slows down through the limit speeds. Full flaps is really only for when you need to come in really slow to a tiny runway like you would for a carrier landing. Or a bush strip ;-) I think this was one of the first planes that came out where bad things happened if you abused the engine. You should blow it up one flight just for the experience :)

    this is a great model. the livery choices are outstanding.
    I just wish the developers worked in the huge cloud of oil smoke when she starts for added realism.

    The Corsair is pretty much the only warbird I fly regularly. And she's much more stable on the rwy if you lock the tail wheel before taking off.

    Nothing wrong with war birds in this sim. If you think about it in real world most war birds fly around more then blowing shit up lol. Although I would love a modern Combat Flight Simulator.

    You need to d 16:06 ecrease prop pitch, screaming around at 3000rpm on a fine pitch won't get you anywhere. Sounds are pretty good though. Sadly, my PC died a while ago, bad fortune and ill health have meant i can't replace it and get MSFS so these videos are what I look forward to.

    • @Beery1962
      @Beery1962 Před 7 měsíci

      @@XCougar85X Terribly unrealistic gunnery models on the IL2 series though. The effects of airframe vibration are hugely under-modeled, as is the aiming error for the AI, which means ship-based, ground-based, and air-to-air AI can routinely get a 1 in a million shot and shoot you down at ridiculously long ranges. The game generates casualties that, in the real world, would have resulted in the war being over in a few weeks due to a lack of pilots. It basically turns what could have been a very neat simulation into an arcade game. Some players don't care, but for me it killed the game, especially since there's no way to modify the gunnery, AI, or damage models.

    Have you ever found an aircraft in MSFS that can spin properly? I suspect not. Maybe MSFS just isn't quite there in terms of flight modeling.

    • @jonbeckett
      @jonbeckett  Před 6 měsíci

      Yes - there are many. Flight Simulator has CFD and soft body modelling built-in - it's up to the aircraft developers which facets of the flight model they want to incorporate. It can also do torque, p-factor, slipstream effect, etc. Some of the Asobo aircraft use all of the modelling toys.

    • @jonbeckett
      @jonbeckett  Před 6 měsíci

      Worth noting - Flight Simulator samples more points on the aircraft than X-Plane does - there's a really good video from Asobo looking at their aerodynamic modelling. They also model the flow of air over hills in response to wind, pressure and temperature patterns.

    • @Beery1962
      @Beery1962 Před 6 měsíci

      @@jonbeckett Could you give one or two specific examples of an aircraft in FS2020 that does spin nicely? I've watched quite a few of your flight test videos and I don't recall a single one where the aircraft enters a spin and requires proper control input to get out of it. Many aircraft seemingly won't really spin at all.

    • @Beery1962
      @Beery1962 Před 6 měsíci

      @@jonbeckett I'm not saying any other sim is better. I've always preferred Flight Simulator to any other sim. But spins have been something I've wanted to see since I played Red Baron back in the 1990s, and I have yet to see a real spin in any flight sim. Even if an aircraft spins (and most don't), it always comes out too easily in my opinion.

    Would be a cool plane to cruise around in and do some cross country flights but the systems modelling is lousy! you noticed it after start up. I don't know why developers model oil and cyl temps to move so fast during warm up, really takes the fun out of operating a big piston engine (I'll stop here)
