People may not realise it but this was actually the beginning of Arsenal's decline. The defensive old guard (Adams, Keown, Bould, Dixon, Winterburn) had all come of age and were either retired or about to retire. For all of Wenger's attacking creativity & flair, he never quite understood the defensive game as much as George Graham did and could never sign the right players to replace the old guard.
