  • Going Gray 2: Silver & Steel - How to Enhance Your Gray Hair the Easy Way Four months ago, I went to my hairstylist and had him bleach my hair out as light as we possibly could. A harsh method, yes, but I have short hair and wasn’t too worried about damage. Then I toned it with Manic Panic Virgin Snow to a white color. I used the color right out of the jar and was really pleased with the result. After a bit, I decided I wanted more of a gray tone and toned with Manic Panic Blue Steel mixed 50/50 with Pastelizer on the top of my head and full strength Blue Steel on the rest of my head. I walk you through it in the video! To maintain my silver tone I wash every other day with purple shampoo. When I’m feeling flush I spring for the Goldwell Dualsenses Unisex and Shimmer Lights when I’m more budget minded.

Purple shampoo will keep your gray looking more silvery than dull, try to wash with a purple shampoo every third shampoo. Don’t use it too often or hair can start to get a little lavender! Frankly, I like my hair a bit lavender so I hit it with purple conditioner, too! Texturizing pomade or paste is a great way to give a separated texture to hair that is much more popular and trendy right now. (Aveda is my favorite - love how fresh and clean it smells!) Going gray is freeing, but unfortunately, society still thinks of gray hair as old, so we have to work a little harder to keep it looking fresh and youthful to match our spirits!

I'm very grateful for your wonderful videos. I'm a 54 year old woman, and I'm just ready to embrace my age and changing hair. This is a hard step for some women, but I think a profound one. I want to do this gracefully, as you have. You are stunning in grey, really, and you help to make this process fun and exciting. Thank you so much!

I am getting ready to retire and want to ramp to my looks. After many years of sitting at a desk at the office, I am ready to start a new life, a new address and a new look.

Hope all is well with you. Just wanted to let you know that you are what is stopping me from grabbing the hair dye and embracing my salt and pepper hair. I am 30 and decided 3 weeks ago to buzz my hair off, I am tired of looking artificial. I hope that my hair looks as fabulous and grey like yours someday. Keep up the good work, love your videos, hello from NYC

I had never heard of manic panic until I saw your video. Well I tried the blue steel/pearlizer combo and love the results. Couldn't believe how much brighter my silver looks. Today I saw manic panic on sale at Sallys so I bought the lavender and snow white. Next time will blend them and see what kind of result I get.

Thanks for this video, Monique! I am toning my grey today per your tutorial. I have about 30 minutes to go! My hairspray has yellowed my white, just like what you were showing on your bleached section. This is an easy solution, and I am so happy you shared this with us. Thank you!

It didn't do much. It's a little better. But, I think I needed to add more blue to the mix. When I compared my mix to yours in the video, yours was still darker mixed with the pastelizer than mine. So, I'm going to deep condition and then try again next weekend.

I want you for my next door neighbor.... so we could do each other's hair!!!! I have decided to stop dying my hair...at almost 70 now, enough is enough! I was dark brown but went blonde the last 10 years or so with long long hair now, but letting it grow out, with about a half inch of gray coming through at this time. Ive decided that once I have a good inch all the dyed hair is getting chopped off! I have no idea what I'm going to look like, but I'm ready, I think?!? Lol. Thank you for all your info.... it's helped me feel great to embrace my age. I want to look great but now like a model or younger than I really am! Your videos make it so much easier to welcome this time of my life! (The reason I'm going gray, 1. Too expensive to have my hair dyed every 3 weeks here. 2. My last hair dresser doesn't know how to wash my hair without tangling it into a mess and then blames me for having long hair! ). Thank you so very much Monique!!!!

Lol...was trying to find where you replied to an earlier comment of mine (thanks for that!! ) but couldn't. I wanted to share that at 48, I've been pretty solidly gray (and WHITE up front and on top) for decaaaades....inherited the early gray from Mom, and just have been chasing the stripe as you put it, most of my adult life. I found your videos while doing research on how to make this transition and am so glad I did - your videos are encouraging and fun but even better, provide the best instruction on how to make the initial jump, follow up with variations on how much product to use and when coupled with good stuff in the way of makeup and wardrobe tips. Many of the tips I've learned by watching you are ones I hadn't considered yet but will need to soon. (I've got brown eyes and brows, so I've got some ideas on how to edit my own pallet . I AM kinda envious of those of with the clear blue eyes...I actually talked my own mom into making the change when I noticed how her white roots really seem to brighten up her gray-blue eyes and I somehow convinced her. Her eyes, like yours, just POP and are stunning framed with the lightness of the gray-white and she's never regretted it since)
I've already been talking with my long time friend and stylist and in a week (lol, waiting for payday), we've got a date with destiny. I'll have to come back and post some pictures when I've got them (profile is still set to dark after a breakup, might be time to change that too).
But thanks again, Monique...I have a feeling your leading a minor army of women forth into their journey to embrace nature - but with empowerment from product. Sooo glad this is happening now when gray is really in vogue and much time and attention given to better products for mature women. I think going gray thirty years ago was really a different story and not nearly as much fun.
    Cheers!! :)

I love the effect on the top front part of your hair. My hair is also all natural...no coloring or bleaching has been done. But I don't like the darker blond -brown hair that I have on the sides and back (top) of my hair. I want it to all be lighter, brighter, and a silvery white color. I don't want it to look fake! I don't mind a darker silver color where my darker hair is now. But not sure how to get the results I want. I was a hairdresser when I was a young lady, but that's been 30 + years ago! But I do know a little about coloring and know that I can end up with red tones on the brownish areas...So the question is should I opt for bleaching first, or just a high lift (what shade is what I want to know!) coloring kit? Thank you and I love your hair! Love your videos too! This is the second or third time I've watched this one.

My hair is brown with grey on top, similar to yours. What will this do to the brown hairs? I do not want red in my hair. Do I have to bleach the grey to white first (like you did), for this to work on the yellow tint. You are showing me that I am not "stuck with yellowing hair." I just wanna cry. I gave up because I didn't know that there was a fix! I want the shiny silver grey! :) I'm amazed that it can be done at home. I don't really want a blue or purple cast to my hair though. I'm not going to do anything until I have this figured out first. I let it grow out naturally to the ankles to get rid of coloring (our family start going grey in our 30's) and I now have pastass hair since I had to cut it. I had very thick ankle length hair all my life, thyroid shuts down and 75% of my hair fell out in 3 months time, it became so very thin at the ends, I became so depressed & after all of that... one side effect of the thyroid medication I was given... "causes hair loss", so I had cut some off (it seems that I'm being forced into shoulder length hair, but I will always hate it). What is left is thin, yellowed & very fine now- like night and day! :( Is this where I should say, "Life sucks?" lol

My eldest sister and brother told me I looked older than I was. So I went and got me some dye. Hi Monique! I am 50 and embraced my silver 2 years ago. I loved my hair and how it sparkled. Then one day my husband said it made me look OLD! I was devastated, ran to Walgreens and picked up a box of brown hair dye. Oh how I regret doing this! So here I am trying to transition all over again. I took the all over highlights approach, but I am seriously thinking about doing a bleach bath to get it super light then using the manic panic to tone it. My question....should I risk the damage to my hair with a bleach bath or just wait it out? Thanks much and BTW you look FABULOUS!

I've been enjoying your videos. I have very dark blonde hair that has been lightened/dyed a medium to light blonde for at least the past 10 years. It is too yellow and I'm wanting to grow out my now gray/white hair. (I'm estimating that I'm about 75% gray...with the front 2/3 and top layer of my hair about 100%) If I use a silver shampoo (purple) on my hair would it help my dyed yellow blonde become more white to better match what I'm trying to grow out?? I'm just trying to make the first 6 months of the transition as easy as possible. I don't mind cutting it, but I can't do something as short as a pixie.

If I kept manic panic in for a 1/2 hour to 45 min, my hair would turn lavender.

Excellent Video clip! Excuse me for butting in, I am interested in your opinion. Have you thought about - Millawdon Goodbye Gray Trick (erm, check it on google should be there)? It is a great exclusive product for learning how to reverse gray hair fast without the normal expense. Ive heard some extraordinary things about it and my best friend Jordan at very last got excellent results with it.

Where do you buy this manic stuff please?

That "purple shampoo" you recommended in another video, turned my hair lilac! NO! Not at all what I want. Taking more than 6 shampoos before it looks grey/gray again.

Natural redheads skip gray, just getting white hair at older age
I understand if it made people think redheads gray first

I recently started to do health and beauty videos here at CZcams and decided to embrace my gray/white/silver hair. I like to wear wigs too, but I am anxious to try the manic panic to enhance what I have going. Pop on by my channel anytime.... you may have suggestions for me. Meanwhile, thanks for the videos you post here. I always enjoy them. I was a Hollywood girl too, for a long time. I still miss the place at times.
