  • Road Trip #473 - I-94 West - North Dakota MIle 30 to Montana Mile 248
    We cover the last 30 miles of I-94 in North Dakota, with a detour through Medora on I-94 Business Loop. We finish at the first exit in Montana (where we turned around and went back into North Dakota).

    Great series! I love living here on the prairies. When I travel other places and then come back I'm so grateful for having so much space. Other places seem way too packed to me! 😁

      I have the opposite experience, although New Orleans isn't exactly a big city. I've been in complete awe when visiting real cities like NYC, Chicago, Toronto. And it's nice to visit the wide-open spaces like North Dakota, but it's almost unsettling to think that I could be standing somewhere without another human within a 1 mile radius. I can't say that I've been anywhere else like that.

      This whole area is adjacent to a rail line, but I don’t think we saw any trains the whole time. I’ll get some train video for you soon. I also think I figured out a way to get some video of Union Station in New Orleans without security kicking me out.

      @504RoadTrips: I-94 through Wisconsin is also a must as there’s a section of I-94 that runs concurrent with I-90 and I-39 between Portage and Madison (although the I-90 concurrency alone continues past Portage), in which at 30 miles (48 km), the I-39/90/94 concurrency is the longest three-route concurrency of the Interstate Highway system and only one of two in existence. Out of these three Interstates, the mile markers and exit numbers coincide with the mile markers on I-90 even though I-94 has the highest mile markers out of these three Interstates.
      If you’re wondering where the other three-route concurrency of the Interstate Highway system in existence is located, it’s in Milwaukee, Wisconsin between I-43, I-894 (a bypass around Milwaukee), and the recently added I-41. The I-41/43/894 concurrency in Milwaukee though is the only three-route concurrency of the Interstate Highway system to have a wrong-way concurrency (where one highway bannered one direction and the other is bannered in the EXACT opposite direction) thrown in. Out of these three interstates, I-894 is the one to retain its mile and exit numbers. What’s interesting is that I-894 runs entirely concurrent with I-41, with I-43 running concurrent only on the east-west portion of the bypass.

    This channel needs 30k subs. Underrated road trips. Needs more attention

      Subs are slowly trickling in. Our audience is a special interest group, so I'd be surprised if we ever have 30k subscribers.

    Which road is better to get I-90 or 94 coming from Seattle to Chicago

    • @504RoadTrips
      @504RoadTrips  Před 4 lety +1

      Pick one. The distance and time is almost exactly the same. If it was me, I would take I-90, since I’ve already driven all the way across ND twice and I’ve never been on I-90. I’d like to think that I-90 would be more interesting because North Dakota is just hours and hours of the same thing, but I honestly have no idea.

      Two years late here, but I-94 is about 25 miles shorter between Tomah, WI and Billings, MT. That may be partially offset by the fact that I-94 passes through the Twin Cities while I-90 doesn't pass through anything bigger than Sioux Falls, SD, so it may or may not be advantageous from a time standpoint.
      There is actually an even shorter way to go, although again it probably doesn't save any time. Exit I-90 at Whitewood, SD, and follow South Dakota Highway 34 to US 85 just south of Belle Fourche. Pass northward through Belle Fourche, and a few miles after the town, grab US 212 westbound. A couple hundred miles later, US 212 will bring you back to I-90 at Crow Agency, MT.
