Yamaha VSTAR 1100 Maintenance - Oil change with filter - Without relocation kit

- NOTE ** While under the bike I mistakenly said oil gets THICKER instead of THINNER with increased temperature and this made it through editing. This was pointed out through usual internet vitrio1 so i'm putting the correction here **
In this video I conduct what is a standard oil change procedure on a VSTAR 1100 without one of those filter relocation kits, discussing some of the reasons why I opted NOT to get this kit; Showing some of the advantages that can be had while only adding 10 extra minutes to the job.
This begins with the removal of my front cylinder slip-on pipe, followed by the loosening of the floorboard on the right foot side. This was followed by the removal of the exhaust pipe off of the motor.
I also remove the screw that holds the rear brake reservoir, this makes the job a lot easier.
With all of this removed, the whole side of the bike was able to be inspected . An 11/16 spanner and small hammer was used to break the tension on the screw of the oil pan and retightened after my custom roll-around was situated. While draining, I move to the filter.
This starts with the outer chrome cover, keeping in mind the different sized screws removed, revealing the oil filter cover that pulls right out, exposing the filter.
Having inspected and cleaned up everything and swapped the filter the filter cover is reinserted and the chrome cover is reapplied after the surrounding chrome areas of the bike are cleaned up. Ive taken this opportunity to clean up all of the hard to reach areas at this point as well as inspect the voltage regulator.
This is also where Ive decided to do a rear brake fluid flush in a separate video. Which is linked in this video.
The nut is re-tightened onto the pan after it is cleaned and it is tightened. I then treat the exhaust studs with anti-seize as I go through a sequence to re-mount the exhaust pipes, and then the rear brake reservoir.
The wife assists with the final step, adding the oil, which is pretty straight forward but documented anyway. The important note is the level should be correct and the oil light should go out when you turn on the ignition and also when you turn on the bike.
I use Yamalube 10w40 - Auta a dopravní prostředky
I felt like I was just chastised for incorrect tightening @12:50, when I didn't touch anything yet😆 Thanks for video.
This was one of the best explanations for Yamaha vstar owners that have this bike. I found it very informative and to the point. I'll be changing my own oil now.
Great, keep all of that money in your pocket, not at the dealer.
Never thought I would actually ENJOY a maintenance video. Great job!
Thanks, Glad you enjoyed it!
@@retrotechandelectronics THANK GOD FOR YOU.... I have an 1100 V Star 2005 that was well taken care of the guy I bought it from was a mechanic.... I go on your video and learn a lot thank you very much

Thanks so much for the excellent video! Changed my oil today with your video playing and me following along. Went perfectly! Now that i know how it all goes I can go much quicker next time. I do not have the money to get that kit, nor would I. Id rather put the money towards more accessories or gear. Thanks again!
Excellent video! Giving the torque specs on the cover bolts, keeping track of which hole each bolt needs to go back, progressively tightening them down is important when you have steel screws going into aluminum threads. Exactly the way I would do this. Thanks for taking the time to do this
Glad you found it helpful... I posted a video with an ORK, in case you want to go that route.
Working on my 2006 v star 1100. Did first oil change and it took a 4 day weekend. But I have full one piece exhaust and the right side saddle bag with a larger battery inside that. It all had to come off. Nut positions and clearances made grind and narrow a 13 m wrench. But it all gave me time to get to know my bike. One thing the dealer I got it did a oil change and check out of the bike and they used permatex instead of a exhaust gasket. I did think ahead and had bought 2 because at a idol I heard rather a valve click or exhaust leak. Exhaust gasket made the difference, nice clean sound. Watched some of your other videos and it's all good stuff, by the way next time for this bike I'm going with a external filter kit. Thanks
Thanks for showing the actual steps. I'll be doing an oil and filterb change in the spring and now I feel kore comfortable in doing so since you went into the specific details of how to do it.
Great video! Totally gave me the confidence I could do my own oil change. I do have stock pipes and for me that was the most difficult part. Getting the nut off was surprisingly difficult. I was able to get it all done. Thanks!!
I'm looking at V Star 1100s rn as my father talked me into getting one
I appreciate your vast knowledge of this bike. You've helped me tremendously as I'm just starting to learn to work on my own bike myself
Good to hear, thanks.
Never had a V Star, but I had a bought new Virago 1100. I changed the oil and filter every 3000 miles. It had 118,000 miles on it when I sold it, and was still running fine. A problem I have with removing the exhaust pipe every 3000 miles is the gaskets. The gasket between the header pipe and head should always be replaced whenever the pipe is removed. I have also had a lot of problems with those graphite bushings used on Japanese bikes where one pipe slips over another pipe. Those tend to cost between $15-$20, and usually get damaged when you remove a pipe. So it's not just a matter of more work and more time, but likely more cost for parts as well.
Very good video. I love how down to earth this rider is. Thank you so much.
Down to earth , but not so far as to lay the bike down!! Glad you enjoyed the video.
@@retrotechandelectronics Ha Ha , good one!
Nice vid. Easy to understand for a guy who’s never did an oil change on a bike.

Excellent detailed description of oil change yam vt1100 I recommend this video. Good job well made video.
Thank you very much!
Thank you so much for taking the time and making this video. God bless you!
You are so welcome!
Wonderful! Thanks for the video!
It made changing the oil on mine a breeze!
Glad it helped!
Thank you for the video! I'm not the handiest mechanic, but I think you've given me enough courage to try doing this myself. Got almost 80K on my 2009. Oil change is sooooo much simpler on my Goldwing!
I installed the Baron relocate kit, and hated it due to leaking. Had the shop take it off quite a while ago.
That is the only thing easier on a goldwing, anything else is a massive undertaking.
@@retrotechandelectronics True. I'm not sure I want to try changing the air filter on the GW. I was shown how to replace all fluids and brakes on it by a buddy, that's about as far as I want to mess with it.
Like all your videos on the VStar!! Have a 2000 model 1100. Original factory exhaust!!!
Do you have the ais installed too?
I put the filter relocation kit on to save time. I don't have two days to let my oil drain, I'd rather ride. Good video, good details.
Glad you liked it.
Great Video.... First time I changed the oil on my 2007 Yamaha V-Star 1100.

Just what I needed for the 2003 I just bought! Thanks.
Glad I could help!
Do you like it?
Okay, very good. Now I am going outside to attempt the first oil change I will do on my 2005 Yamaha V-star 1100 classic. This is 2024 so I hope the previous owner did not leave anything different or do anything wrong when they, or if they, did an oil change. Wish me luck!
Good luck!
Great video as always. Thank you.
Glad you enjoyed it, thank you, more to come.
Thanks for the vid! I have a BT1100 and it has the same engine only difference is the exhaust is not in the way. One thing I did notice, a lot of extra oil came of when I put the bike on the centrestand. So I think it makes sence to put the bike up straight so the last oil can come out.
I guess it's possible, ill try it next time, but i see the drain plug on the low side so im curious to see if it works.
Thank you sir, this was exactly what I was looking for
Glad it helped
Just got the 2007 1100 this will do me good thank you
You're welcome.
great video.like to note, these bikes are famous for starter issues just changed my sprag clutch{one way locking bearing}.these bikes are hard to turn over, engine will kick back on start up,don t mess around install a kickass batterie before this happens;300 cranking amps antigravite batterie, plus, hope this saves you money and headaches .happy biking!!!!!
You're right, notably from folks with carb issues holding down the throttle to start their bikes. Very bad for the starter clutch. I should make a movie about this before long.
I will note that as my carbs have given fits and I want to rebuild or adjust them. What should the idle rpms be at cold and warmed up?
Thanks man!great video.very helpful.
Thank you.
Great video. Thanks. PS I used a paint roller tray, fits beautifully. 👍🏻👍🏻
Yeah, that would do it too.
That exhaust was a pain for me your video was extremely helpful tho 👍
Very thorough!! Thank you!!
Glad you enjoyed it!
on my 07 the mufflers are connected so they both have to be removed.i change the filter every other change, during the fall. there is an oring under the longest bottom screw if it gets lost it will leak.
I wish I had a filter relocation kit for mine, it would be so much easier. I use an old antifreeze jug with a side cut out, fits perfect under the frame. Also, I have to ask what oil you're using that is thinner when cold? As a mechanic for almost 20 years, I've never seen an oil that does that. Even the OE Yamalube is thinner when warm.
So detailed! Great!
Glad you found it helpful.

I have a question.
I just changed my fiction plateson my vstar 1100.
I put the crank case back on.when I started up.
Then I sean oil on the floor.
Any ideas.
Thanks
Great walk through. What should we do when a pint of water comes out first? Full flush?
Great video, thank you so much.
You're very welcome!
Clear info with some extra points which owners would find useful. Would have liked some long shots as well.
Really Nice Video...very Informative and well presented. Been Riding and DIY on my bikes for almost 40 years....your right on target. I have always 1...Drained out old oil with Bike on side stand, 2....allowed draining to go overnight before refilling and closing up. Also I would like to add....while draining overnight you should loosely place Filler Cap on to prevent possibility of anything falling into or getting into it. I had a buddy that was draining out his oil and as fate would have it [murphy's law?] dropped a screw right through the hole....I'm sure you can guess the rest. .No,.....He fortunately knew he did it but had a bitch job of getting it out.
True, if going that long to drain the oil it would be wise to loosely fit the cap back on. Good point.
Two words sir... Thank you!
Two words... You're Welcome! (Technically three)
Did you ever encounter problem with the engine oil level sensor? Mine is keeping the red oil light on even after oil change. Garage says it is rather the sensor or the oil pump...?? thanks

What will make the breather cover on a 1100 v Star Silverado get hot enough to burn a blister
Thanks for the info. I was looking for what filter you used. Couldnt see it on the box. But I saw people suggested K&N145 filters. When I bought my 07 Vstar 1100 it already had cobras put on it. I guess the previous owner went through the dropping the exhaust headache. Lucky me.
Check my recent video on the Relocation kit if you are having pipe issues.
do you remember what size the end was on your ratchet to get the oil filter cover off?
Where did you see the torque numbers for the oil housing? I have the manual here in Aus and couldn't see the 7.5 foot/pounds (or 10.5 nm comparison).... Good video though thank you
Cab't find this addressed in the manual. When I change the filter and oil on my 1100 VStar Custom 2006 does that automatically take care of the oil for the crankcase?
Yes, This model has one common oil for the whole system except for the final drive gear oil.
Can you please put a link for the clamp , I can't seem to find anyware in the UK . Thanks
Thanks again brother, your video's have saved me so much time with not having to look through old pdf manuals that are not nearly as descriptive as your videos.. I am basically doing everything that I can to my 2000 V Star 1100 Classic this week. My carbs turned out excellent, can;'t wait to ride again! The only issue that I have experienced is getting the original air box reassembled....the tubes connecting the airbox to the engine keep sliding off! I am thinking about using spray adhesive, what do you think?
I know that you have the Max Air System, and I will have to wait before upgrading to something like that, I have two teenagers who take all of my extra money . Ha ha.
Tomorrow I hopeful wrap of the airbox, complete the oil change and then on to reinstalling the baffles that were removed by the previous owner ( I bought new ones) Thanks again for everything, you are an excellent teacher.
adhesive should not be used. If they are deformed, I found that they can be fixed with light heat and bending with a hot air gun.
@@retrotechandelectronics That's a great idea thanks. Fortunately, I did nothing drastic thanks to the rain. I will definitely use a heat gun. Brilliant thinking!
@@retrotechandelectronics Hello again, just want to say that the heat gun worked perfectly, the bike is now fully reassembled and I took it out on short test ride to ensure that everything worked and then out again the next day this time on a 52 mile ride. In the 2 years that I have owned my 2000 V Star 1100, it has never ridden this well, so I am very grateful to you.
I have one final question if you don't mind : At 70 miles per hours the bike seems to vibrate, and I don't know what causes it, because at 80 mph it stops. Again, the only time I ever experience vibration is between 70 and 80 miles per hour. Any ideas on what could be the root cause? FYI the tires are still in great condition, I was thinking that maybe I should have the tires professionally balanced? Could that be it or maybe the carbs need syncing? Thank you again.
Tao Tuhao it’s hard for me to answer this one but tire balancing could be an issue
@@retrotechandelectronics Thank you for all of your generous time and answers and also for your fantastic video's. Best Wishes to you and your family.
I’m a 20 years rider and never once change the oil because I’ve taken my bike to support a local small business but now the shop owner/tech retired and thank to your informative videos I have the confidence to make my first oil change on my 2000 V-Star 1100 , also thank you for your service 🇺🇸
Consider the other video I posted with the ORC as well if you want to go that option.
Very helpful, thank you
You're welcome!
After filling oil and putting the cap back on, run the bike for about 30 seconds. Shut the bike off, wait a minute and double check the oil level.
Doing this today. Wish me luck.
2 hours in and it’s possible to get the exhaust off. Just can’t get to one of the bolts.
So, after looking at the oil filter cover, I’m wondering if I even need to take the exhaust off.
So, trying to drain the oil first to see if I can then get the oil filter cover off. But no, can’t even get to the oil plug to losen.
Might have to put the whole thing back together and take it in for a $200 oil change.
Nothings easy.
Ok, finally got it all done, plus spark plug replacement. 7 hrs. Luckily I won’t have to do this for a while. Started right up.
Very nice brother. Thank you.

Thanks.. did you ever retighten then footboard screws ? Think I missed that
I did.
Was there any model years of the Vstar 1100 that didn't need to remove the exhaust?
None that I know of.
Great video! Love the seat, did you buy it online? I'm looking to replace my stock seat but am having a hard time finding a seat like yours with the bracket made specifically for a vstar 1100. Any help or links would be appreciated. Thanks!!
Mustang or Corbin I think
I agree completely that for the cost of the relocation kit, potential problems that exist, and time it takes to install, it’s not worth it. Unless you put a ton of miles on the bike and change oil and filter every few weeks, and even then it’s risky. I have heard horror stories.
When removing the exhaust is there a gasket or crush washer that needs to be replaced?
There is, its a metallic ring. It only needs to be replaced it it leaks. I think Ive replaced one, once in 10 years and thats because I broke it.
How in the f do you get the exhaust back on like that I've been working on it for an hour now and I can't get the angle to get it back on both studs
this is why i bought the relocation kit. exhaust is a bast£££
@Desert Dawg I'll just have to have help next time then
@@dantae666 I've been debating it for awhile now
This is a great motorcycle! This oil and filter change is perfect for the DIY like me. However, this just seems like a lot of work to change the oil and filter. I'm looking to buy either a bike like this, 2005, or a 2007 Honda 1100 Shadow, which makes the oil and filter change much easier. Both bikes have less than 9,000 miles on them. Which bike would you recommend?
Aside from the Oil change... Which is a minor affair. Having often worked on both the Honda Shadow 1100 and the Vstar 1100 I find the Vstar to be superior in both quality and ease of maintenance. The Honda only wins in the cooling department.
Thanks. Enjoyed your video. I got a 2007 Yamaha 1100 custom winch has about 6600 miles on it. Only when I take highway going 60-65 miles/hour, I see some spots and splashes like oil leak on the battery cover and exhaust. Can you tell me what causes this or if I have to do something about it. Thx Sal
A shot in the dark, but check the breather hose on the cylinder head cover on the right side it could be unplugged.
Hi good video, I have an 1100 virago and the oil filter cover looks similar, on mine there is another o-ring in the bottom bolt hole of the filter cover, looking at your v star it looks like you also have one. Just a warning, on my first oil change, I didn’t know about it and lost it in my oil drain bucket, needless to say, when I started it it leaked like a sieve. I now always have a set of all three o-rings on hand when changing oil cause i have needed to change them due to breakage.
Oh yeah, that could get messy... ugh....
Thank you

I enjoyed this maintenance tutorial presented by Christopher Walken's nephew.
How much oil did you fill on? My nearest yamaha workshop told me to fill 3,1L with filter. So when my engine is warm the Oillevel glas show me that oillevel is between 1/2 and full
In the end I use the glass after running to determine the level.
What did you use to clean the oil filter cavity? Also could you use said cleaner and spray an abundance to accelerate the removal of from the reservoir?
Great videos btw!!!
The only thing used to clean the cavity was clean paper towels, nothing else. As for draining the pan, only time drains the oil, nothing more.
@@retrotechandelectronics right on! Thanks for the reply
When removing my header exhaust pipe, the studs were seized on the nuts and thus came out as one unit, instead of only the nuts coming off the studs. I was still able to tighten the header pipe back on no problem using the seized nut+stud. What should I do to remedy this situation? Continue using the seized stud + nut, which now acts as a bolt? Or?
I would remove the nut from the stud and reseat the stud properly. I would not continue by removing the whole stud.
@@retrotechandelectronics the nut is completely seized on the stud due to rust and corrosion.
Doesn't the oil level on a V-Star need to be checked while the bike is warm?
No.
the manual calls for 3 .1 qts. How much did you put in?
The final oil amount is done by the level glass and not by volume.
So you tighten the bolts up one at a time?
No
I really enjoy your videos. I bought a project bike..Yamaha dragstar 1100 ,1999. I have everything back together cleaned carbs with the help of your video but when I start it , my oil warning light comes on. What do you think?
Hello, Im glad my videos were helpfull. My bike is from the same timeframe and in the last few years the oil light sender has gone a bit wonky. The first question is always of course asking that the oil is filled to the proper level with the bike situated in the balanced upright position on level ground. With that out of the way I wonder if your light goes off when you lift the bike upright as mine generally does. I suspect ill be doing a sender unit swapout video in the near future. Some argue the wrong oil can cause this but I used Yamalube so its out of the question.
Lemme know..
the oil light is only a level sensor. mine comes on when its started until i level the bike then it goes out. sometimes it comes on when riding then goes out. if you can see oil in the sight glass when the bile is level your good. Mine started sucking oil out of the breather after i drilled the pipes out. so it was drawing oil up into the air box. i fixed this by adding pods and re jetting. hope this helps.
One of the Reasons is there can be a tendency for Air bubbles forming in the oil near the Sender causing false readings...the Bubbles should usually disappear once you are riding and movement and pressure is happening in the system....

I'm sorry but this video is not helpful... said no one ever. Just bought a 2003 1100 and need to do the oil change this week. Thanks bud, Happy Riding!
All these engines really need are oil changes....... and a pod upgrade..
Oil change is not all , make sure you check AIS system filter , you will not have beck fier puping noise.
Does anyone add a couple ounces of seafoam before an oil change and run it a few minutes to thin the oil and internally clean the engine?
I do it sometimes on my vehicles, have for a long time.
I would never add seafoam to my oil and intentionally thin it out. The clearance between the parts and all of the endplay is designed for specific viscosity. Seafoam would break that film down and wear down the mating metal surfaces.
Do you have a video on how to fix a sticky gear shifter n how to fix it any info be great. Love your videoes
Thks in advance
Not yet
I change my oil religiously. That said what a pain. Great design for people who don’t spend a lot of time riding. Not Yamahas best.
I their finest work for sure.
How many quarts would you say you used?
The measurement was specifically done using the inspection window
Does anyone know how to change the oil sight glass on an 06 Yamaha 1100?
As far as I know, it is replaced from the inside and not a small task as the whole side cover needs to come off.
Some people on very tight budgets use a very rough repair of using a quarter, nickel or dime depending on size of the sight glass along with JB weld. I actually did this repair myself when the the front master cylinder sight glass broke.on my old 1985 Honda Shadow VT 700, it worked well, for many months up until, I got around to properly fixing it
Thanks!
No problem!

Get the relocation kit, save the headache of breaking one of the bolts for the exhaust in the head. He did a lot of unnecessary steps. Some difference tho, I don't have floorboards I have pegs, also once the exhaust is off the head I can slide the front half of the pipe out and gain access to everything. @@retrotechandelectronics Why didn't I think of that?
I have never owned a bike that took this much effort to change the oil! Maybe my Harley’s and Indians are different?
its not that removing the exhaust is difficult. i still have to replace the seals every few years. its having to replace exhaust seals, and the studs and nuts. because they rust up. if you only changing it once a year or every other year. i put on many miles.
You don't use anti seize on the threads?
@@retrotechandelectronics some of us aren't Fairweather riders. It kinda wore off between when I applied it and the next filter change. Also this way the filter can be changed every time. Not every other like the manual states.
Amen, people don't take care of their bikes very well.... see it all the time!!
Me too...
no they just wait longer to change the filter. manual says oil change every 3k and filter every 6k. but now i can change the filter every oil change. and you are supposed to change the filter when the oil is hot. that means hot pipe. the second time i changed my filter i had the relocation kit.
You are not supposed to change the oil when it is hot, thats non-sense. Your supposed to change the oil when gravity brought it all down into the pan, where you remove it. There is zero benefit to heating up multi-weight oil other than waiting around for it to work its way down again not to coat the whole engine with it right before your about to dump it...smh
@@retrotechandelectronics this is directly from the manual 3-17 start the engine, warm it up for several minutes, then turn off. place container under engine. remove filler cap, remove drain bolt and drain oil. read it for yourself www.werder.ee/Manual/XVS1100.pdf
@@retrotechandelectronics you get more oil out faster when its warm. it does say to wait till the pipe is warm to touch before removing.
