Perfect for those cold cold wet days. You’ll love the flavours of this Vietnamese beef stew. Happy Sunday! 💕
/
I’m Vietnamese and I approve this recipe!! I made this and it turned out absolutely delicious!! I made a few adjustments - I sautéed the tomato paste with the lemongrass, cinnamon sticks, anise, and cloves. I also adapted from a different recipe by replacing the two out of four cups of beef broth with coconut water. The coconut water gave it a hint of sweetness.
I enjoyed this recipe and your CZcams channel. First time making one of your recipes!
Your tip about freezing tablespoons of tomato paste was the best cooking tip ever! I do this with any thick consistency ingredient that I use only a small portion of like chili garlic sauce, hot sauces, etc. It’s such a waste to find an expired bottle of “whatever” after only using one or two tablespoons. Thanks for this tip!
I put leftover tomato paste in a plastic sandwich baggie and lay it flat, then u use anything like the back of a knife or a chopstick to “cut” indentations in the bag and when it freezes, the pieces break off easily. You can do lines or cubes, depending on the baggie size. Imagine a tik tac toe pattern.
Growing your own food to eat is the best!!
My husband loves ordering this from Vietnamese restaurants. Going to give this a try this week. Thanks for the recipe. You can regrow the ends of lemongrass by sticking them in water until roots grow. Then plant in your garden.
Thanks for the tip!
Meat marinade
2tbsp fisch sauce
1tbsp soy sauce
1tbsp sugar
1tsp five spice powder
Spices
3p lemongrass
2 thump size pieces ginger
3 large shallots
3 large cloves garlic
1pcs cinnamon
3 star anise
3 cloves
4 cups Beef broth
1tbsp Ketjap manis
2tbsp fish sauce
3tbsp tomato paste
Garnish
koriander
spring onion
I am glad you like this dish, and it’s also one of my favorites. My sister-in-law cooks this dish pretty well too, and she sometimes uses curry as the main spice. She also add a little bit of hoisin sauce when marinating the beef. You can also add dried tangerine peel to flavor it up more ;)
Great meal. Keep those winter meals coming. Flo you're a great comfort food cook.
Sounds like a nice addition to fall/winter cooking. Yumm
I love watching your recipes. I’m a believer to so I appreciate your munistry.
I think you both have a winning formula for a CZcams cooking channel - definitely a million subscribers in your future! You are both very likable and I think Dude coming in at the end to eat is a big win!!!
Man Flo that looks so good. I wish I could grow my own fruits and vegetables, there is a big difference.
My fiancé and I saw this video the day it was posted and knew we had to make it for dinner the same week. Couldn't find beef fingers but we did substitute stew beef as suggested. Followed the rest of the recipe and everything came out perfectly. We like a little oyster sauce and siracha with these kinds of noodle dishes and they paired very well! We'll definitely be making this again and next time will use some cheesecloth and a bit of twine to make a sachet for all the aromatics to make fishing them out a bit easier, but we'll keep the recipe the same. Thanks, Flo and Dude! We love what you do!
Dear Flo, your husband is very lucky. He can eat various foods which you cook.
Looks absolutely delicious!
Looks so good. Another amazing dish to try! Thank you.
Flo - I'm from Vancouver and I also graduated from UBC. I moved to Bellevue WA about 12 years ago. Watching you talk and cook reminds me of home. I've tried a few of your recipes and they are delicious. Thank you for the videos!
I am so going to try this recipe ! Thank you for the video, excellent!
Looks great! Love pho. Merry Christmas Flo, Dude, and family.
Love it !
Flo, you and Dude are a Great team !❤️
Another delicious looking recipe, thanks. It's not really cold enough here yet but we were yearning for some beef stew last night and my wife whipped up a great batch but I like some of your additions and we'll try that next time. Good job!
I am most definitely going to try this on my family. Looks amazing ♡
this french influenced viet style beef stew pairs well with Baguette for Banh Mi Bo Kho.... nice recipe and watching your video makes me hungry all of the sudden......
This looks amazing, can't wait to try it!
It was so pleasurable to hangout with you guys. I learned a lot. Thank you & God bless ❤️
This looks great and i have to say your tomatoe paste trick is genius for sure as i will do the same from now on.
Looks good Flo! I’m not too familiar with Vietnamese cooking but definitely will try this .
Thank you for the recipe!
What a perfect couple. Love you guys' recipes.
This is so mouth-watering! 😱😍😍
good menu and perfect for winter
Sensationally delicious ! Thank you!
That’s my one of my fave Vietnamese food..and I like the way you cook it…
I love this casserole.
Look delicious. Love cilantro.
I just discovered you. You are so professional and knowledgeable. I truly enjoy your presentations!
Good day, what a yummy recipe that is for the pressure cooker, yeah! I did the spaghetti and it was yummy. Easy peasy is good 👍👍👍, have a blessed day.
That is a smart way to keep leftover tomato paste. Thank you for sharing a practical way to store it. This dish looks so good.
I used to watch you pre-pandemic. Incredible how far you guys have come!
So kind! Thanks so much, both of you!
Made this. Delicious!
Love your videos. Freezing the tomato paste is a great idea.
Wow that's awesome looks delicious 😋
Wow! My husband and I always cross to US boarder on the way back we have this favorite Vietnamese restaurant. with Pho order I also like the beef stew with baguette. I always wondered how they cook it because it's so good. Thank you for this recipe!!!
New viewer, really am enjoying your recipes and presentation. I found your channel by accident, and was happy to make your green beans and pork recipe, which has been a favorite of mine that I had in restaurants but had been unsuccessful trying to recreate on my own
I don't know where you and Dude have been all of my "adult cooking and trolling for recipes" life, but WOW 😲... I feel like I hit the lottery tonight when you and your beautiful stew popped up on my CZcams feed!! Woohoo!!! Thank you! This looks wonderful!
I'm so happy that my self sprouted lemon grass has started growing beautifully on its own.
Can hardly wait to try this and stalk your 'channel'! Bless you! 💕
Your tomato sauce hack is genius! Love you guys!
Omg the tomato paste hack is soo clever!!! I am going to be stealing that idea :)
Flo and Dude, thank for this video awesome, you guys make it look so easy, I now need to buy a one pot cooker and try out this recipe and hope it tastes good as the one in the video, goes thank you so much.
Nish from UK
Hi Flo, we also use beef shank for bo kho and it is quite good!
my nephew is part Vietnamese and half white and his dad's have been amazing half white so that makes him a quarter Vietnamese but we love that Nummies food I just love this I'm going to try it alright take care
Thanks for another great idea for dinner. Please consider doing a video going over the Asian spices and sauces that you commonly purchase for you pantry. Thank you.
Thanks Flo subscribed and like !!!
I love your work. I spent time in Viet-Nam and other countries around there. While on a short week R&R in Korea I fell in love with kimchee. I have not found but one place that served and that was a Korean market in San Antonio. Can you do a segment on making it in an authentic way.
I really appreciate your work. When I put these recipes to practice I will really enjoy cooking again. Thank you, God bless.
Sooooo good 😊
Very smart idea for tomato paste.
Ah yes the rain is back Flo LOL. EXCELLENT idea for dinner today. We’re not too far apart so you might get some high winds so hunker down eat stew and stay safe. As always God Bless.
Thanks, Randy! Blessings to you too!
I tie the long cilantro stems together and throw in the InstaPot. Hate wasting something that still has some flavor.
Love the tomato paste tip!!
Love your videos , I have been watching you guys for years!! When I got my first IP!
Interesting you didn't peel the carrots. Just the other day I was taking with a friend about peeling carrots. We both were wonderful it is really necessary!
It depends… sometimes I just scrub them and other times I do peel them. I don’t really have a preference but I do find it funny that people will often comment when I do the opposite of what they do. 😆 Thanks for following along over the years, Stephanie. 💕
Good job 👍
I have never, ever seen or heard beef finger meat here in the US, in my 63 years. It does remind me of the vacuum packed beef cheeks I occasionally see. Are you familiar with beef cheeks, Flo? Fatty, but oh, so succulent.
Love your cooking, simple👍👍. Like to know where you buy tube chopper, is it cordless?
Im about that pho... so now I have a new dish to try!
I love you, Flo.
Looks good, but sure looks like a regular stew. Getting cold and dark here in Oakland. Would be good for this weather.
look delicious! Could you tell me more about leaving your instant pot unattended? do you run errands or go to work for 4 hours? That will be super handy if I could do that.
So many ingredients I wish I could afford to make this meal
If you plant the base of the Union Judas cut off you have a leak light coming up next year and they're huge I cut him off at the base and chopped and used the white part and saute him sometimes it's great they're huge
I making this asap
What brand of the chopping board do you use? Thanks
Flo, I suggest that you oil that wooden cutting board. Food grade mineral oil is best, but vegetable oil will work.
Looks yummy god bless ❤️🙏
I love you and Dude! Went through my account and got rid of a LOT of creators. Of course, I kept yours. Interestingly, I've never heard of garlic as being "juicy" (I love garlic) so next year guess who will attempt to home grow garlic? Great recipe. Take care.
🤤🤤🤤🤤🤤🤤 i’ll try to make this dish in my regular pressure cooker ….. thank you for the idea of freezing the tomato paste in 1Tbs portions… genius 😬
Love it. Where did you purchase the finger meat? Can't find it in Hawaii
Hi Flo, what is the brand of food processor for grinding onion? Thanks
Do Vietnamese use a pressure cooker? Love your food wish you would cook more traditional ways.
I'd like to see the chef do the taste. You did all the hard work. It's only fair for audience to see you eat the fruit of your labor.
Can I make this without an instant pot? and if so what times would you suggest?
Hi Flo- that stew looks amazing. I’ve never heard/seen that type of beef. I wonder if we can find it here?
You’re so resourceful in making the tomato paste into those little discs and freezing them. I always was bothered by the waste from only using a bit from the can. I started buying it in a tube. Lol.
I hope you and yours are all doing well! Sending love. Xxoo
Maybe ask a butcher if not in a supermarket. I’ve been storing tomato paste like that for years. I only found tubes in recent years.
@@FloLum I just found the tubes. I wish I’d know about your ingenious idea before all the tomato paste I’ve wasted. ♥️
I did a “tips” video a couple of years ago. Maybe it happened before you started watching. I was thinking of doing another one soon. 😊
Where we live (born and raised here) it is so hard to find a butcher that will do what you ask! I just heard of one though and so when I can FINALLY go out I will ask him about the finger cuts and some other things I’d like.
@@FloLum I think I saw it but I should watch it again!
Hi Flo! What's the name of your Instant Pot? I'd like to get the exact one, that you have😊
This looks wonderful...I've never seen that cut of beef before and I seriously doubt I can get it at the supermarket so...I'm thinking beef flanken ribs might be a good substitute... Also, lemon grass and Thai basil might be tough as well but I'll check with our local Asian store a they carry a little variety of produce.
I was thinking of substituting beef cheeks.
@@wendyellis6402 I've never seen them in grocery stores around here but sounds good. Even beef shanks would work too.
Flo I'd love to see how you grind meat, meaning what tools/appliance you use? I know you'd have a very practical solution. :)
Looks delicious! Would brisket (not corned beef) work?
For sure!
That looks great Flo. I can’t find the finger meat here in my area.
That’s sad… Maybe a butcher might have some.
@@FloLum thank you I will inquire!
Excellent Recipe that can be replicated at home. THANK YOU Flo for your step by step detail that inspires & is approachable! We can't find "finger meat" in grocery meat section either.😓
THANKS to Dude's videography closeups on the steps & sound clarity in recording too. 👏 Just a query: it seems like this video doesn't have high definition sharpness recording nor deep colour saturation as all the usual videos have been in the past year.🤔 Any changes in equipment?
That looks both tasty and fun to make, Flo!
Question: I don't see the grinder you used for the shallots and garlic (and: Bravi on your gardening). Might you add a link to it?
Thanks for all the fun times watching you cook and Dude Ooo and Aaah over the results.
You mean the hand blender? geni.us/KitchAidBlender
@@FloLum I guess that's it, with the "chopper attachment", though I don't recall the motor attached to the bottle part when you used it. "Just wait till you're my age, young lady! You won't remember either." hehe
Thanks for coming back to me on it.
Mouthwatering flum n dude
Wow you grew that shallot??? Well done guys! I have some growing and wanted to know if you just let the top greens flop or if you cut them back? My shallots haven't come up to the surface yet. This recipe looks delish - I love lemongrass and tried to grow that too, but the plant didn't grow at all. It stayed alive for many months without change to size, then it just died.
We let the green tops flop and turn brown. Also clipped the flowers as they may change the flavour. Some of our shallots did not grow at all but the ones that did are so good. Almost all gone. 🙁
Where can you buy beef fingers?
Oh, almost forgot, I love the Dude’s comments
Thanks! That looks delicious😋 Remind me of home. Since you guys love to eat meat try to do some liver detox it will help get rid of the pigmentations.
I wish I could find that finger meat. It looks amazing!
i love that recipe but I wonder which grocery did you find the meat.I shop at Superstore and other groceries but have never seen it.
I picked it up at T&T but have also bought it from Safeway and maybe Save-On-Foods.
thank you
Q: Do you reserve/conserve the skimmed fat for use in other dishes? (i.e. to sauté other veg, meats, or even tofu like substances*) [* recognizing that use with meat replacement flies in the face of vegetarianism. However we carnivores like tofu now and again too.].. Also, the reserved fats have limited application in making winter feeds for birds and other creatures. Why waste?
If I don't have an Instapot, how long should the stew cook on the stove (I assume on low heat?)?
Hey James. Yes, low heat for 1.5 - 2 hours or until the meat is tender.
Can you make Vietnamese soup with lemon grass
No beef fingers? Use ,short rib, ox tails, or chuck roast really any kind of beef works , the fatty meats works best.
Where is the best place to buy finger meat. I shop at Costco but haven’t seen it. But I wasn’t looking.
I’ve never seen this cut of beef-where did you get it?
T&T but have also seen it at Safeway and I think Save-On-Foods.
can i use chuck roast??
Absolutely!
