I am no longer reading the comments on this video. They're of very poor quality. Mainly just accusing us of "forgetting" games. Guys, we can't read your minds and include exactly the games YOU want each episode. It's very frustrating to read comments saying "You forgot _____" or "How could you not include ______?" or "No ______? I'm so disappointed!". We're definitely fine with people suggesting games for future installments or suggesting we try certain games (which a lot of you have been doing, thanks!) but the whining is not cool at all. So I probably won't be reading nor responding to any more comments on this particular video. I can now understand why AVGN doesn't comment on his videos any more. We'll continue to include the games we want to include. Apologies to all of the really cool fans (which are most of you) for this. We really like you guys! Feel free to talk to us on Facebook, Twitter and Reddit. :)

Can I just say I actually really like your format. Other than just going for the most obvious games in a genre you often show off original and unique games that, otherwise, don't get talked about. I know you are reading anything anymore but maybe somehow you read this and then you can kiss my sores with the gentle salve of your reply.

My favorite sports games tend to be the X-Treme variety...like SSX, Tony Hawk, Speed Ball, etc..

Tommy Lasorda Baseball is the only baseball game I've played, ever. My wife met him a couple of years ago a restaurant - if I'd been there, I woulda told him about playing this game.

The ending was pure gold. I am the kinda guy who likes sports games with TWISTS. Games like Mutant league hockey and football,Super High Impact,Nba jam,Baseball simulator 1,000 (and it's SNES counterpart),Arch rivals and pigskin footbrawl! Seriously though technical sports games are crap and full of boredom. the ONLY ones I enjoyed were "tecmo bowl" and *sighs while putting up shield for protection* Bases loaded 2 : The second season. Another great episode guys. Keep up the awesome work!

NBA HangTime , Blades of Steel, Double Dribble, NBA Give N' Go, Extra Innings, Baseball Stars 2! Lots of great sports games out there...
One of my favorite football games when I was younger was Troy Aikman Football for the Super Nintendo. I will never forget this one play that happened. The game was tied and time was running out. So I threw the football deep, my guy caught it and was about to score but was tackled and he fumbled on the 1 yard line. The computer picked it up and started running towards my endzone, I tackled him when he was about to score and he fumbled. I picked it up and ran all the way for a touchdown to win the game. It was the craziest thing I have er seen. The best part is that when you fumble in the game, the announcer shouts out fumble, so you kept hearing it. Lol good times.

God I love Tecmo Bowl. The best time I've ever had with it is when I had 3 friends over and we had a tournament. It ended up with all of us shouting like manics when ever a touch down or an interception happened.
Downhill Domination, NHL 94/14, Madden 25, Skate 3, Dodgeball Advance, Fifa 12 and SSX 3 are my fave sports games. Great episode guys!

Out of all the Tecmo Bowl games, Super Tecmo Bowl on the Nes, TB Kickoff on the DS and TB Throwback on the PS3/360 are the best in the series IMO. I recommend checking them out.

I love that you guys brought up this topic. There are some sports gems out there for sure. I still think Genesis had some of the best sports titles out there. I was blown away when I first heard the speech in the game like Joe Montana's Football. Very entertaining and informative video guys. Nice work.

NIntendo World Cup on the NES is still the best football (soccer) game in my opinion
I really don't enjoy sports games that much. That being said; I still watched this video like 8 times. The way you guys do your videos is a new standard for enjoyment, humor and retro-game reviews! I watch it once a day. I must habe re watched the "Saturn" review like 30 times. Your friendship and commentary is awesome and hilarious! Please keep doing what you do. Great episode. My favorite retro sports title is 2020 Baseball. It was a Neo Geo game that was later ported to the SNES and the Genesis. Power ups! Cut scenes! Men, women and robots cracking 700ft home runs! That game was amazing!
NBA JAM Tournament Edition, NHL Hockey '92 and NFL Blitz 2000, RBI Baseball, Baseball Stars 2, 2020 Baseball are the only retro sports games I'll play.
My dad bought me Super Bases Loaded just so we could play a game together. Never EVER did I beat him.

Guys, I love that you did a sports video. I actually like looking at the progression of sports games. You can see so much of the history of games whether it is user interface or speech. Plus, my favorite skit of yours is the Craig Stadler skit.

Not much of a sports game fan, but I always enjoyed Wayne Gretzky's 3D Hockey. It didn't take itself seriously and was hilarious and fast-paced. Another good episode, guys!

Thank you! Many people expect us to read their minds. Many also think we need to include every game in every video. Those kinds of comments can be pretty frustrating to read. Instead, we'd appreciate suggestions for a future installments instead of "you forgot..." or "how could you leave out..." etc. Thanks to all of the people who ARE actually suggesting games for us to try like Baseball Simulator, Bad News Baseball and a few others. :)

Great episode! I'm usually not a sports game fan but I do enjoy some arcade style sports games. Some games I'd love to see if there is another sports episode are NBA Jam, Sensible Soccer, NFL Blitz, RedCard, Wayne Gretzky's 3D Hockey and the Mutant League games
Great video as always. I just started watching your videos and love all of them! Yes I do love sports games so I appreciate this video. I loved NBA Live 95 and NBA Jam most, but I also loved Tecmo Super Bowl and MLBPA Baseball.

I actually own madden 92, 94, and 95! 95 is the best by far. It's pretty easy to destroy the computer, but it's fun to play with friends. Also I owned based loaded as a kid, you totally should've shown the scene where the pitcher gets beat up if he beans the batter too much! LOL! Great episode! Even though you forgot hockey (EA's NHL '94 is awesome) and NBA Jam, I'll still say it was a good episode!
Tons of arcade sports games that cater to the non sports fans out there, Virtua striker, Mario Tennis, Mario Strikers, Power Spikes, Super Volleyball, NBA Jam, Arch Rivals to name a very few.

I really enjoyed this video! It brought me back to my childhood. My brothers owned a Genesis and were obsessed with sports games. We had NBA Live 95, Bill Walsh College Football (like Madden, but with college teams), NBA Jam, and others. Good times with them.
Also, that ending was hilarious. That "chant" will be stuck in my head for days now.

Hey Joe, I don't know if somebody has already commented, but the player you control on Lakers vs. Celtics IS indeed marked - he has black sneakers and black socks. It took me a while to figure it out in the nineties. Great game, it was very popular in my native Brazil, where, as you know, SEGA was huge. Keep up the excelent work.

Man, I spent so much time playing Tecmo Super Bowl III on the Genesis when I was a kid, that's probably one of my favorite sports games of all time. I'd be all for another sports episode guys, there's still so much you haven't covered.

No Extra Innings? Best baseball game ever. No NES Super Tecmo Bowl? Best football game ever.

Game Sack The ONLY game you for got was NHL '94, because it was the first Sports game to have the full sport license and to have the Players Association (to have all the players for each team); and voted THE best NHL game and of the best Sports games of all time.
Some of my favorite sports games are: NBA Street on the PS2 and NFL Blitz on the N64! I'd love to see those two talked about in the next one!
Glad you guys did an episode on this. Sports games are often mocked (and a lot of times it's deserved, especially when it comes to the latest showings from EA and 2K) but there are plenty of awesome sport games too. I am surprised you guys didn't talk about arcade-style sports games like NBA Jam and NFL Blitz.

Last night I had a dream that I found a copy of Super Tennis fully boxed and mint for 320yen and I snapped it up. As I walked out of the department store, I realized the box was a fake..... I have some very strange dreams.
Kinda got the insinuation that people who like sports games don't play any other types of games. It's just one genre... doesn't have an effect on someone's overall gaming habits.
Tecmo Super Bowl on the NES was good football game but like Dave said after the 16 bit days I got out of the sports games.
Like your show. I'm a sports fan and a video game fan so thanks for doing this episode even thought yall didn't seem to enjoy it. I like Madden without the passing windows because you can see what the defense is doing. I still play most of the games you reviewed except bases loaded (I hate that view).

Oh you guys! It's almost brave, these days to talk about sports games in the gaming community, but this is mother f*$%in GAME SACK! This is gonna be awesome!
Oh, and take the negative comments with a grain of salt, some people just can't help but talk crap and think too hard about reasons why something is lame or that something was forgotten.
I know that you guys only have your own games to work with, so that can be somewhat limiting in some ways, but gosh darnit, you guys make the best of what you have, I'll say that.
Thanks for uploading as always, your videos are just about the only thing I have to look forward to on Sundays.

You guys make some good points. Part of what I don't like about modern sports games is that they take themselves too seriously and are tough to play vs the old ones. I take modern baseball games and simplify the controls as much as possible to make them more fun.
Suggestion: There are many good sports games out there that you guys didn't cover. NFL2K5 is legendary and has a fanbase that refuses to play Madden and has kept that game alive with new roster updates each year.
There's also other fun sports games such as Mutant League Football and ML Hockey. You could also add traditional hockey games and you can have a lot of fun covering the old Atari and 8-bit sports games.
I understand you're not big fans of sports games, so I appreciate the effort with making this episode.
Fight Night round 2 on the game cube is my favorite sports game. Nothing is better than winding up a haymaker with the analog stick.
Informative as always guys!! I love tennis games of all eras with my fav being the original Top Spin which I played at an arcade. 1 sports game that comes to mind was a winter Olympics on the Mega Drive in where 1 discipline was cross country skiing which you had to shoot targets!! Oh yeah... NBA JAM!!!

Awesome episode! Sports games are oft forgotten when people do video game reviews just because the people who are into sports games typically aren't huge game enthusiasts (I'm the exception). One game I wish you'd have mentioned was Bases Loaded 3 for the NES as it was one of my favorite baseball games as a kid. Loved that game. Bruno from El Paso was THE MAN at bat. :D

This is pretty terrifying. After the video ended, an alarm across the street started and it sounded EXACTLY like that Bases Loaded 2 music.
Only football games I liked really are the Dreamcast 2K games, Joe Montana games on Genesis, Mutant Football, Tecmo Bowls, and NFL Blitz. I think that is all. Might be forgetting some stuff. I love arcade style sports. Way better than simulation.

No love for the NES Baseball Stars? The game was very customizable, especially for the time. You can change players names, attributes, make your own teams, hire players and fire players. The fire players screen was awesome. Plus the music was awesome. I still find myself humming the song that plays when a runner is in scoring position. So if you ever do another Sports show you have to cover this game.

You know, I almost wasn't going to watch this since I don't usually play sports games. I decided to anyway because I know you guys put a ton of work into your show. I really enjoyed this episode! I remember playing a few of those games when I was a kid. The ending was hilarious! If you guys do another episodes I'd love to see some hockey games in there. NHL 96 had this glitch where if you shot the almost exactly parallel to the net it'd go in almost every time. Once we figured that out my brother and I would end up ridiculous scores that looked more like basketball game scores LOL

Nice video! One complaint though: When you mentioned Tecmo Super Bowl, actually there is an NES version and the 16-bit ones do not run as fast as the NES one. The NES one runs exactly as fast as the original Tecmo Bowl, so there's that.
I'm pretty impressed by how skilled Joe is at creating characters that look like him, it's almost creepy : P
Great Episode, Ive never been much of a sport fan, but Ive always enjoyed sports games. today's games are to sim like to be much fun, but there are some genesis/snes games that are a lot of fun still to play
Some great games that were left out are NBA Jam, NFL Blitz, Vitua Tennis, Mutant League Football/Hockey, and I also remember having a lot of fun with NBA Street. PS: David Robinson played for the San Antonio Spurs and his nickname was the Admiral because he served in the Navy.
I don't watch sports, and I don't play sports games, but I just watched 30 minutes of your reviews and was entertained. I think that's a sign you guys are doing something right. Or very very wrong. ;)

Fun sports games even for non-sports fans-
NHL 94 (Genesis), Mutant League Football (Genesis), Little League Baseball (NES), Megaman Soccer (SNES), International Superstar Soccer Deluxe (SNES), Virtua Tennis (Dreamcast), NBA Showdown 94 (Genesis)
Emmitt Smith Football on the SNES. I ran the "Sweep Left" play every time and it broke the game. It was perfect. The voiceovers still resound in my mind during every day life.
"Boom! The quarterback's dooown for the count."
Sports games aren't always my favorite, but I do have a few memories of having fun with them:
Nagano Winter Olympics '98 (N64)
- Took me a while to get into it, but once I found a few sports that I liked (speed skating, bobsledding), it really managed to click. Even managed to beat a few records.
NBA JAM (SNES)
- I don't think I'll ever see a basketball game like this in real life - mostly because I don't expect players to nail a triple backflip on their way to dunking a ball. But hey, 2 on 2 basketball with wild antics made for a fun with friends. I also enjoyed the 2010 revival a lot.
Madden NFL 07 (Wii)
- Madden games usually aren't my thing, but when I played this version on the Wii, it was immensely fun. Using motion control for passes really made me feel like a part of the game, and it probably is one of my better memories of the Wii's launch other than...
Wii Sports (Wii)
- Hey, it may be simple, but you can't deny that Wii Sports was fun at its peak. 5 sports, endless hours of fun with friends, and a lot of bragging rights to be had when you'd get into the game. Wasn't fun straining my elbow playing bowling, though.
FIFA 09 (DS)
- Football games are pretty ace, especially on the go. I used to have a GBA emulator with FIFA games and they were pretty fun. Of course, when the DS came out, I tried my hand at a few games, and it was pretty fun. It also had local and online multiplayer which was quite interesting. I still play it to this day, and I've rarely seen the need to upgrade since I've long abandoned getting sports games on a yearly basis.
NFL Blitz 2000 (PlayStation)
- I remember when my brother had owned a PlayStation, and his friends would be over the house having tons of fun with this. A close friend picked up the game as well, so I did have a hand at it, and it was pretty solid. Never did try the recent EA Sports revival.
Backyard Soccer: MLS Edition (PC)
- This game will always have a place in my heart for being one of the most fun experiences I've had - I kept up an impressive winning streak (only lost once), and I enjoyed the zany nature of the game with powerups. Also, this was made by Humongous Entertainment, well known for games like Pajama Sam and Spy Fox.

Loved the episode guys. You dudes need to check out MLB Power Pros (PS2/Wii) if you want a recent, insanely fun and arcadey Japanese baseball game. It also has an RPG mode!
