  • As a reponse to requests that have been made on my ADV Rider blog as well as my FB page, here is a walk around of my DR650 named Sunny, detailing changes I made when I built her in April 2018 for my trip.
    Sunny is a 2011 Suzuki DR650 purchased in 2018 at Bedford Suzuki in Bedford PA with 62 miles on her, for $4000 OTD!
    Here is a link to my blog on Adventure Rider with lots of pictures and descriptions from my journey!
    advrider.com/f/threads/cycle-...
    Some things done to her that were not mentioned in the video:
    *NSU screw mod-NSU screws were replaced and safety wired.
    *Starter motor modded with a Warp9 end cap with a sealed bearing.
    *stock battery replaced with a larger-than-stock capacity AGM battery by Moto-Batt.
    *Eastern Beaver switched fuse harness added that has fused connections in the fairing tower for the GPS, LED lightbar and USB outlet.
    *Added a retainer for the countershaft seal.
    *Crankshaft cap and timing mark cap replaced with ones that have large allen head fittings, as the stock ones are known for seizing.
    *Rear shock is a Cogent Suspension Mojave model, sprung and valved for my load and weight.
    *Small ceramic skull on the front fender (source in Oazaca MX) serves to ward off evil spirits in front of the bike while underway. Has functioned perfectly for over a year on the road now.
    *Brake and clutch lever replaced with adjustable reach 3-finger levers sourced from China (copies of expensive levers) and work perfectly.
    *Wireless heat controller nounted to the left handlebar (for the Gerbings heated jacket liner) is made by Warm n Safe.
    *Locking mount for the Zumo 595 GPS is made by Zumolocks.
    *Most nuts and bolts connected to main or subframe have had Nordlock anti-vibration washers added.
    The bike is named after Monkey D. Luffy's ship the "Thousand Sunny" from the popular Manga/Anime series "One Piece".

    That is a beautifully straightforward adventure bike. I really like it because it is effectively entirely low tech (apart from the Garmin etc of course); no complex fixes/repairs to worry about even if you're 200 miles out in a South American desert. A superb and truly individualised machine.

So far I've put about 45,000 miles in Mexico and Central America so far and it feels like I just scratched the surface. I tried to keep my bike looking as stock as possible while being as physically bulletproof as possible...Excel Wheels, Cogent suspension (F&R), upgraded stator for heated vest, usb for charging, 6.6 gal tank...lots of extras but that bike is king in South of the US border. Also, I'm from Medina county, OH...I live in Seattle now but just wanted to say RIDE FAR my friend!!

      Word of caution: one of the front mounts attaches to the actual lower section of the rubber-mounted oil cooler!! A crash in Guatemala not only broke the mount, but also broke the corner of the oil cooler off. Luckily I found someone in Honduras to weld the aluminum. I have since changed that mount entirely to attach to the actual frame like the other side. I don’t really recommend them. I emailed Dirt Racks about the failure and they never replied

      @DanielByersCycleSouth  Před 2 lety

      Hey Bryan. Let me put it to you with numbers.
      In the first 20,000 miles on Sunny I went through two sets of OEM cush rubbers, with the second set being used with spacers cut from an inner tube to tighten up the amount of play that developed.
      Then I installed the polyurethane Procycle cush rubbers.
      That was 40,000 miles ago and there is still no play.
      There is a modification you can have done to the sprocket carrier on DR650’s that adds a second bearing that is said to eliminate the issue that causes fast cush rubber wear, but I didn’t do that modification. And still it works great. They are a cheap investment.
      The wheels were custom made by Woodys Wheel Works in Denver.

    Very nice.. I'm jealous..I have a question. The style of faring you have.. is that higher than the other version? The other version without the KTM light I see looks tall without any windshield.. Wonder which provides best wind protection? I'm 5'9" . With your faring I might not get buffeting on the helmet without the wind deflector you added.👍 Very nice bike. And you run stock rear shock with new spring?

      @DanielByersCycleSouth  Před 3 lety +1

      Hey Kevin. Yenkro makes two versions, with and without the windscreen. The one without is taller for sure than the other without screen. I’m just over six foot and have always found an adjustment that works. Only in far southern Patagonia where the winds were unbearable did I remove the extension and run the windscreen in the low setting. I also removed the bill from my helmet to reduce wind buffeting and neck strain. I love my Yenkro

      @@DanielByersCycleSouth sure like the looks of that thing.. both of them.. I guess it's a better option than that Lynx model with a touring screen fitted. 12.5" x 12.5" adjustable height. Mounting is leaving weight on bars also

      Yeah. After three years traveling Latin America and 60,000 miles I’d never go back to adding weight to the steering like it was stock. Transforms the bike along with Cogent DDC cartridges and springs

      Hey Mozilla. I just recently returned to the US with Sunny after being stuck in Brazil 7 months due to Covid closing all the borders in South America. Shortly after returning I was badly injured in an accident and am currently staying with a friend in Denver trying to recuperate. I did ride off and on with friends during the three years on the road

    ( Roughly ) how much $$$ invested in your build ?

    • @DanielByersCycleSouth
      @DanielByersCycleSouth  Před 4 lety +4

      Hey Marty! Thanks for watching the video, and that's a good question. I was fortunate to find my 2011 DR650 used at a dealer in PA with only 62 miles on her, and negotiated a $4000 OTD cost for the bike itself. The modifications added up to around $4500, so less than $9000 all in. Maybe that sounds high for a DR, but shes certainly one of a kind (unless someone replicates the build) and has proven herself to be a wonderful bike. Over 47,000 miles now. I'm currently stranded in Brazil due to the borders all being closed because of the COVID pandemic. I'm not riding her now, as a simple injury from a fall would put me into a hospital in Brazil....not something anyone would want right now, as the pandemic is running rampant in some parts of this country. I still start her up a few times a week to keep the gas in the carb fresh, and she still running very well, ready to take me further north back towards the US (I already made it to Ushuaia)

      Barry I’ll run whatever I can find while traveling the world.
      Back here in the States, in the land of plenty, my two favorites are the Mitas E-07 set or the MotoZ Tractionator GPS set. Either are great all-rounders and last a long time
